Tord was born and raised in Valencia, his parents being involved in the resistance against The Armada (the villains of Pirate101). However his father was killed in battle and his mother was captured by Armada soldiers.
After which, Tord turned to creating weapons and smuggling them to the resistance…but ended up getting arrested by The Armada once they found out. But thankfully he was freed when the ship where he was held captive was attacked by warriors from Grizzleheim.
He stowed away on the Grizzleheim-ian ship. And ended up in, well, Grizzleheim. Where he would eventually get introduced to storm magic. He decided to reinvent himself as a wizard (due to his criminal history with The Armada) and enrolled in Ravenwood as a Diviner.
Still, he does one hope to one day take down The Armada, and hopefully rescue his mother in the process.
Matt comes from a wealthy family who reside in Marleybone. He inherited his human half from his father, and his vampire half from his mother.
It's unlikely he'll say it himself, but even with all the gold in his family's possession, he was left bored and lonely. And so he decided to enroll in Ravenwood to become a wizard. Upon moving to Wizard City for his enrollment, his parents bought him a castle (The Royal Playhouse) for him and his friends to live in.
Tom's origins can be traced back all the way to the dark pits of Khrysalis, as he was known there as "The Shadow Beast", one of the many creations known as "Shadow Creatures".
But for reasons he could barely comprehend at the time, he desired a different path. So like his contemporary; The Rat aka Rasputin, The Shadow Beast took a new identity; that of a human named "Thomas Beastdweller", Tom for short. The only remains of the Shadow Beast being his eyes, and the symbol of Shadowmancy scrawled on his back.
He separated himself from Khrysalis and found his way to Polaris. Where he became enthralled with the powers of Thaumaturgy. And so, upon hearing of Ravenwood, enrolled in the magical academy. With nobody, not even the headmaster, being aware of his true identity...
Tom does not take a formal secondary school, but is privy to the use of Shadowmancy. However he doesn't use it often, as using it too much would force him into his real form.

Out of the main 6, Edd is the only one to come from Earth, a world that doesn't even believe in magic. But after being summoned to the world by Merle Ambrose, he was drawn to the creative spark of thunder and the fantastical concepts of Myth, he chose to be enrolled as a Diviner, taking Myth as his secondary school.
(Also yes I'm aware that the player students are intended to be kids, but I prefer idea of Edd and the gang (aside from Dusk) being college-aged attending a magical boarding school. Plus I don't think there's a strict age range in terms of enrollment at Ravenwood, or any magic school in The Spiral for that matter.)

Synopsis
There are many worlds across The Spiral, each different than the other. Each with unique biomes, cultures, and species. But different as they are, they all join together in The Ravenwood School of Magical Arts. Where six aspiring wizards, each with a story to tell, and each with their own special quirks wind up creating a bond that transcends worlds.
Their adventures will lead them all across The Spiral. From the scorching sands of Krokotopia to the frigid lands of Polaris. While they might not be the brightest students in class, with strength, courage, friendship, and a little bit of luck, any evil force will regret crossing paths with them!
Once they finish their homework that is....
