I'm sure someone else has coined that term, even though I've never heard it before. But when I started going down this path, intentionally fucking around on TikTok to see what the zeitgeist looks like right now, I quickly clocked two things:
1. A lot of the influencers are selling stuff on TikTok shop, Amazon, and similar.
2. A lot of the mystery boxes, mystery scoops, bundles, and so forth are loaded with (or comprised entirely of) cheaply made junk you can buy for next to nothing on Shein, AliExpress, and Temu. A lot of them have things I know beyond a doubt came from Dollar Tree.
Most of the goods consumed in developed nations are manufactured under questionable conditions in less-developed countries. There are ethical concerns about the goods coming from Shein, just like Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, and Target. But there are limits.
I'm a moderately cynical person. I rarely automatically denounce something as bullshit, but I often put a pin in a thought that sends up a red flag for me.
Someone selling a 300-herb spell kit on TikTok shop and then telling you to use 10 rare herbs in your spells has a clear conflict of interest. And someone selling you a bunch of witchy Shein products at a 700% markup, but choosing them for you and repacking it ✨aesthetically✨ is not the kind of "small business" I seek to support.
As for me, I'm an acquirer. I like to shop, I like to play with new toys. It's too easy for me to fall into the trap of getting goodies. This trap feels personal. It was set for me, the 🤑abundance spells💸 are working their magic.
So I'm going to try to acquire tools second hand, repurpose things I already have, and make as many things as I can.
