rambling about gaty….an analysis of sorts?? i dont know what im doing
she was always my fav even wayy before tpot 2, and of course i appreciate how comforting, understanding she is and also how great of a listener she is! she is sort of like a mentor to struggling characters (pin, two) and i love it! but she wasn’t always like that
i write human au fic for bfdi sometimes, and the first one i ever finished (it wwas like 16 chapters and gaty was the main character) was wrapping up around the early days of tpot. a lot of it was written before even tpot 2. now im currently revising it and adding a new plotline, but basically, when i wrote that story, i based gaty’s entire character off of who she was in bfb—not tpot. and this is carried over into even the newer version, because her character was written in the same place she was in in bfb.
and like!! she was sort of judgemental in bfb! she was a little uptight i think. just generally less pleasant i guess?? like when she exasperatedly exclaims that saw messed up in bfb 6, or when she tells flower that she looks idiotic, she taunts four in bfb 12, she has that one passive aggressive line in bfb 9. she cries at the thought of being eliminated.she also leads the confrontation against book’s erratic actions and puts in a whole lot of effort to keep the team from completely dissolving into chaos.
even this quote from her official biography, “gaty believes that caring what others think of oneself is shameful. yet she expects people to care what she thinks of them” makes her sound like kind of an asshole (even if she isnt really)
and so, i find it odd to see that her character is now perceived as being caring, loyal, and understanding. she’s ALWAYS been loyal, but she wasn’t as sympathetic or compassionate as she was in tpot. she was definitely more irritable, judgemental, and overall much less caring in bfb.
im not sure why she changed her attitude. maybe im stupid. it probably had something to do with her team’s falling out and the whole book situation. maybe she realized that if she instead tried to understand book’s way of thinking, she would be able to effectively help and understand other contestants. pin in particular went in a similar direction to book in bfdia, so maybe that encouraged their friendship??
gaty’s personality has definitely seen a lot of shifts over the years (shifts…seasons…..shifting…..) and as someone who spends a lot of time writing gaty’s character around the bfb era, i guess i don’t tend to think of her as she was in tpot.
its just so strange for me to think about how people in the fandom talk about her now. like shes practically a martyr! and back when tpot 2 seemed out of reach, i had no clue they would do this with her character. of course i love how much she’s grown and her relationship with her new friends!!! you go girl!!!!
but also i do miss her back when she had a stick up her ass💔
