When I was in high school and stupid I had this fantasy that I would play through my head while stacking shoes at my part time job. If I was really ticked at a customer I would play a scene through my head where the US was in a totalitarian military nuclear state and we had to use forged passports to escape the country. My grandmother got everyone in the family passports to the UK to be with family friends, but one was to Australia (where my boyfriend lives.) Back then my parents didn't know about him so in the fantasy I snatched the Australian one and ran so they could stay together because I knew I had a safe place to hide. The fantasy continued with people being hauled away shouting they were legit Australian while I hid in a corner, me being in a taxi pretending to be native because the taxi driver was prejudiced against the backwards racist mess the USA was, and finally making it to my boyfriends house, where, bloody and scared, I hid for months without seeing the light of day, so nobody would send me back. Back then I thought it was silly nonsense and a sort of "apocalyptic YA novel plot". ...I didn't think I'd ever have it potentially be even close to true.
