obsessed where stories where it is like. the mistakes are unfixable and the worst thing that could happen happened and nothing can go back to how it was. but there was still love in this and love will continue after this and love endures always. - @currentlycryingaboutlancelot
after a few days, i feel better about The Man In The High Castle so i feel like being in the right headspace to give my opinion about it, especially about Joeliana.
season 1 and the first part of season 2 was really good to me. after this, this went downhill. not only in terms of romance but in terms of what the creators of the show wanted the audience to see.
at the end of season 1, Juliana gives Joe an escape to Mexico. she says to him that she believes him, she does not believe in the films, in the fact that he believes in the ideology of the Reich. in short, she knows heâs a good man.
we can see that in the beginning of season 2, when heâs fully shocked that the Reich assassinated the pirates with whom he was with on the boat. when he says to Smith that he quits, that he doesnât want to work for the Reich anymore. when Smith says that in this job, it cannot be interfered by feelings for someone and Joe answers something along the lines ânot me, i cannot do thatâ. and then, we see that later in the season, when his dad in Berlin wants to assassin so many people and he says this phrase thatâs my favourite of him âi understand loyalty to a person, not a causeâ. he would does not think it is good to kill for the Reich, he does not agree with this ideology. and his loyalty lies with Juliana. Johnâs the one who said to Joe that Juliana was dead. but Joe doesnât search for more evidences, he believes in him, and go straight to Berlin and even start a new ârelationshipâ with Nicole that does not make any sense? he talks about Juliana again and he has this hallucination where he sees her, but he doesnât search more if she is really dead. because, may I recall, that Smith said âweâll know in one day or two if she is the woman from the Resistance whoâs deadâ. but this wasnât sure! another plot hole imo.
then for Juliana, when she is escaping the Kempetai, she seek for asylum to the Reich saying that she works with Joe Blake. when she arrives in Berlin, she excepts to see him here but she only get âheâs awayâ as an information. she searches for him, but the writers forget rapidly that she searches for him as the season goes buy. which is one plot hole here : she loves Joe, why would she stop looking for him? at least having news of him? because she needed his help, thatâs also why she went to the Reich. they have a connection : John Smith. he both know who they are, that theyâre in love with each other and this is each otherâs weak point. he knows it because he says something like âyes, i am gonna use them to get what i wantâ when another agent tells him that Juliana lied concerning the nature of her relationship with Joe. as Joe realises it, Smith manipulates them a lot. he uses them whenever he get the chance to. when Juliana goes to the Smithâs for dinner, Smith receives a call from Joe. he never once mentioned it to Juliana or to Joe, that she was alive and that she was in his house at the right moment! i mean, only if he wanted to torture Juliana, he couldâve said that he had him on the phone again and that heâs forced to stay in Berlin or something like that. this was such a big opportunity for me. i understand that Smith had other things to care about at this moment and that Joe told him âIâm doneâ and then hung up so he didnât really pick him up on it but still. i mean, if he wants spies, Joeliana together would be amazing!!! and if Joe had knew that Juliana was alive, he wouldâve run to New York in seconds. also, when we see in s2/s3 that Joe was arrested alongside his father in the Reich, that he went on TV with a false discourseâŠJuliana never saw this? she never heard about it? she never knew he was imprisoned? at not any point, it was known in other countries that Heussman had a son who was with him during his time as Fuhrer ? still a plothole.
what really didnât make sense for me was that Joe stays in Berlin, he choose to stay with his dad, to stay in the Reich. the whole point of Joe was that Juliana changed him, changed his point of view the system, and he just becomes what⊠a brainwashed mean Nazi? this is the second part of my analysis : at this point, they made characters to be symbols. Joe and Juliana werenât humans in a dystopia but they were symbols. Joe, the symbol of the man whoâs too brainwashed and tortured by the system he cannot come back to himself. and Juliana, the woman who fights to have a better world than the one theyâre living in. and this woman would do everything to end this system, including killing the man she loves. this is where there is no sense for me. in season 3, we see them being all lovey dovey, having those domestic scenes together that are so cute! and then, they fight : Joe threaten Juliana and she kills him. like. tell me how can they be all in love one second and the other one they attack each other ? this doesnât make any sense to me.
the last part of my analysis is this : they didnât have enough time together, that is also why a lot of the writing choices in the season 3 doesnât make any sense to me. they wanted to make them be feared of each other ? okay, then show me how this builds up. they did show Joe being still really brainwashed by the Reich but does this justify that he would threaten the woman he loves with a gun? i donât think so, with what weâve seen so far at this point in s3. thatâs why also i think they were more built as symbols than real persons because they wanted to show what a authoritarian system do to people. but this is very disappointing because it feels like theyâre not human anymore. theyâre just symbol of the Reich or a revolution. and itâs okay if they wanted to show us that, but they didnât start with this in season 1. i loved Joe and Juliana of season 1, they were so extraordinary. so for me there is a lot of incoherences, it does not make sense.
overall, i just really wished they had more time together. they were truly amazing and had so much potential. they didnât see each other during one WHOLE season in s2, like what the hell? i love their domestic scenes in season 3 though, you can see how happy they are with each other. thatâs also why itâs so incoherent that they fight SO violently together after that. they look like total different people. i still havenât continued the show since Joe died, tbh i donât think i will anytime soon.
for me, they shouldâve been endgame. i loved the films storyline and that they were always in those films. whatever happened, it always came back to them. thatâs what connected all characters together too, they both were a link to everyone in the show. and the films made me believe their story was fate. i will still believe that even if the show didnât take the road i wanted it to take. the actors have such an amazing chemistry together, this is really wonderful. theyâre one of the couples with the most chemisty iâve ever seen on TV.
iâll finish by saying that it is such a shame that the creators of the show changed that much. this is very disappointing. theyâll always be in my heart because they were so good together!! chemistry /100, and the story was really interesting and intriguing. in my mind, they ran away together and then they came back (because theyâre gonna get killed at some point, theyâre both criminals) and are spies together. because they ace at it! i love themm<33

the other week I started watching The Man in the High Castle and dear gods please donât judge me too harshly đ«Ł
âYeah.â Joe huffs, taking a step back and all his warmth with him. âThought so.â
Before he can stop himself, Frankâs hand shoots out, catching Joeâs pretentious leather jacket in a vice grip. Stupid. Reckless. The words briefly flash through his mind before heâs yanking Joe closer, crashing their lips together.
