We've visited this interesting little stone tower along the banks of the Charles & #StonyBrook Rivers in #WestonMA a number of times, and being in the area we'd figure we'd check in again. . . Built in 1889 by #EbenNortonHosford, the tower supposedly marks the location of Fort Norumbega a legendary Norse city. Hosford, who made his fortune inventing a practical synthesis of baking powder, was convinced the #Algonquin word "#Norumbega" was originally Norvega (or Norway) and that #Vikings had set up a settlement in and around Boston. . . You'll find numerous Viking memorials installed by Hosford in Boston- the Lief Erickson statue between Kenmore Square and Mass Ave being among the easiest to spot. Those with a keen eye will also find a plaque by the side of Memorial Drive near Mount Auburn Hospital. Venturing out of Boston- Thorvald's Rock which sits in a shallow well outside the Tuck Museum in Hampton, New hampshire is another supposed "out of place artifact" as is the Newport Tower in Rhode Island, and the #WestfordKinght carved on a stone in Massachusetts all of which have been said to give clues to European exploration of our region long before Columbus. . . . Te truth is if one was to venture North into Canada, verified presence of the #Vikings can be found at the sttlement of L'anse aux Meadows in #Newfoundland....so perhaps Hosford wasn't too far off! . . . #igersboston #igersnewengland #archeology #travelblog #oopa #norse #lieferiksson #historical #monuments #history #newengland (at Norumbega Tower)
