Sidebar- COZYFILEZ âWhat We Talkin Boutâ isnât taking anything away from NYC just pointing out how much the people from 757 who push the culture and movement are the some of the biggest names for inspiration and how our fashion sense shaped the world essentially and in my humble opinion we coexist with NYC. We just didnât have the big stage. Once we made it to big stage you saw and took notice of us. 757 ONLY.
PSA- NORFOLK AKA WAVY CITY I STAMPED & CREATEDđWE BEEN SAYING WAVU FAR AS IN 757 BEFORE ANYONE IN VA.. SHOUTOUT MAX B THO
COZYFILEZ- WHAT WE TALKIN BOUT?
Todayâs take is on fashion⌠maybe a hot take I should say
But we all know NYC is the Mecca of fashion. The confidence, boldness, and sheer flamboyant spirit that comes with the city gives them that jazzy sense of style. A lot of it is rooted in southern culture as well but itâs something that those bright lights and big stage does that brings the best out of ppl.
Example I grew up in Norfolk VA, 757- 7 cities. Grandfather from Brooklyn, Aunt from Bronx, uncle is from Harlem and more. So that snazz was something I looked forward to seeing.
But the older I got I started to wonder⌠is NYC really the trendsetting city of the world? What makes them so special? A lot of questions I had to ask myself.
Is it possible that it isnât that they start the trends, but is it that being that NYC ppl branch out and move down south or Southerns go to NYC maybe itâs that they pick up on these fashion pieces and statements and once they bring it in the limelight of New York City thatâs when the world takes notice.
Is it possible that theyâve (not stolen) but bitten a lot of other areas style and being that the world looks at NYC maybe theyâve gotten the title of the most fashionable city.
Itâs the diversity! Other places possibly arenât tapping into that.
But also letâs make it clear⌠a lot of trends have started in NYC but also maybe a lot havenât came from NYC. Itâs the lure of being from NYC everybody wants to have. And NO being born in New York State is different from being from New York City. Ask a Virginian is being from the Smithfield the same as the 757 (weâre the culture of VA) itâs not the same. Youâll meet a lot of fake New Yorkers nowadays because of the internet. TRANSPLANTS đ You canât fake the cultural impact! If weâre being honest the biggest impact on culture for African Americans especially in fashion, pop and urban culture comes from people from the 757. Pharrell changed the landscape of fashion and music before Kanye. Allen Iverson changed fashion in sports.
Missy Elliot changed music and is one of the pioneers for female MCs with her bold statements. When you look at it and think about it, NYC and the 757 (757 ONLY) coexist when it comes to changing the culture.
Am I saying VA (757 only) should be looked at for its contributions yes. Am I saying NYC isnât a trendsetting city No. But I do think maybe just maybe the credit we give them for a lot of cultural changes to fashion wasnât created by them but more so because they have the big stage maybe it wasnât seen before they brought it on that big stage.
