Genuinely a fan of this more âsubduedâ Hoid. Brandon did an excellent job of using Hoid as an indicator species for how serious this situation is. Even within this series alone, hes like never serious and never gives straight anwsers and such. Seeing him so solemn and straight forward is a great way to be like âwe fr rnâ
Like uhh paraphrased from the new preview chapters. (Dalinar)
âThe fact no quip was added on was unnerving.â

I had a crazy thought a few days ago, but now I don't think it's so crazy.
Is Syl the author of Knights of Wind and Truth?
I reviewed the Wind and Truth epigraphs released so far and the one from chapter 2 caught my attention:
âI first knew the Wind as a child, during days before I knew dreams. What need has a child of dreams or aspirations? They live, and love, the life that is.â â From Knights of Wind and Truth, page 3
It reminded me of something Syl said in Oathbinger:
Syl walked up to him in the air. âTheyâre like I remember them.â
âRemember them?â Kaladin whispered. âSyl, you never knew me when I lived here.â
âThatâs true,â she said.
âSo how can you remember them?â Kaladin said, frowning.
âBecause I do,â Syl said, flitting around him. âEveryone is connected, Kaladin. Everything is connected. I didnât know you then, but the winds did, and I am of the winds.â
âYouâre honorspren.â
âThe winds are of Honor,â she said, laughing as if heâd said something ridiculous. âWe are kindred blood.â
âYou donât have blood.â
âAnd you donât have an imagination, it appears.â She landed in the air before him and became a young woman. âBesides, there was ⌠another voice. Pure, with a song like tapped crystal, distant yet demandingâŚâ
And in chapter 10 Syl appoints herself as Kaladin's scribe?? đ¤¨
I think Syl is the author of the epigraphs. That's my new theory.
Anyway,
Chapter 10: I loved everything about this chapter!
Kaladin followed Syl into a section of the tower with lower ceilings. They had to stop flying and walk, and soon entered the scribesâ⌠uh, supply depot?
That wasnât what they called it, but Kaladin of course couldnât read the sign. Scribes didnât have a quartermaster. Storms, what did they call the place? A long, low-ceilinged room full of bookcases and puttering ardents, bald heads reflecting the glowing lights embedded into the stone. The scents of paper and hogshide leather filled the air.
So basically:
Syl bobbed right up to the counter. âDo you have my things?â She waved at Kaladin. âI brought a pack human.â
âA what?â Kaladin said.
LMAO. Kaladin is Syl's "pack human."
"She squinted at Kaladin. âYouâre not going to teach him to read it, are you?â
âWhat if I did?â Syl said, going up on her tiptoes and projecting confidence. âDalinar reads.â
DO IT, SYL. TEACH KALADIN HOW TO READ.
âWhat is it?â Kaladin said, flipping through the pages.
âThe Way of Kings,â Syl said. âYour own copy! I got it for you, since Iâm your scribe.â
Syl got Kaladin a copy of The Way of Kings . . . đ¤ Now why would she want him to have that book? Does she think Kaladin will find Nohadon's writing useful as Dalinar's heir? And how does Syl even know about that book?
Btw - I love that we've come full circle with that book.
Syl leaned forward conspiratorially across the counter. âI could never figure out why these humans were so shy about the spot between their legs! Strange to my uncultured spren mind. Then I figured it out! Must be something pretty ugly down there, for everyone to be so afraid to show it! The ugliest thing I know of is a chull head. So when I made this body, I put one there.â
woman stared at Syl, and seemed to be trying very hard not to look.
â⌠Chull head,â the woman finally said.
âChull head,â Syl replied.
âDown⌠there.â
âDown there.â Syl held the womanâs eyes with an unblinking stare, before adding, âI feed it grass sometimes.â
I love how Syl loves to screw around with people.
âDo you even exist?â he said, saying it before he thought through the words. âUnder the clothing? I mean, are the clothes your skin, orâŚâ
She leaned toward him. âWanna see?â
âOh, storms no,â he said, imagining her vanishing her clothing right there in the middle of the book-quartermaster depot-place, fully visible to everyone. Or perhaps worse, just to himâto make him blush. Storms, she could do that at any time, in the middle of a meeting with Dalinar. Sheâd probably find it as funny as sticking his feet to the floor. One would think, after all this time, heâd have learned to keep his storming mouth shut.
âStill wondering how much detail I have, arenât you?â she said, leaning up against him.
âNo,â he said forcefully. âYouâre going to find a way to embarrass me. So no.â
She rolled her eyes. âWe are as we were imagined, Kaladin,â she said. âBasically humanâbut with certain enviable improvements. You can assume that if a human has it, I do tooâunless itâs icky.â
I picked up shipper vibes from this interaction. Although I don't ship Syladin, I'm not opposed to it either. A romance between them wouldn't be the worst thing to happen. Syladin is preferable to killing either character. Just saying.
âLook,â Kaladin said, âyou need to talk to someone about your problems. Not me; Iâm just some stranger. But find someone. Talk. Grow. Itâs worth the effort, all right?â
Yes, Brandon! Give us more of this! I love therapist-Kaladin. It suits him so well.
âI assume,â Kaladin said under his breath, âmost book-quartermasters arenât so terrible.â
âWait, what did you call her?â
âUm⌠book-quartermaster? Who works at the scribesâ supply depot?â
âThe head librarian,â she said, âat the library?â
âOh, right. Yeah, thatâs the word.â
âYou are absolutely adorable sometimes.
BOOK-QUARTERMASTER!? đđ Oh, Kaladin. Syl's right. You are absolutely adorable sometimes.
CHAPTER 11:
For while the contest of champions was to happen in the East, a different contest was to happen in Shinovar. And one that the Wind swore was equally vital. Perhaps more so. âFrom Knights of Wind and Truth, page 8  Â
Oh, really!? The stuff going down in Shinovar is more important than the contest of champions? Well, I feel justified in giving Kaladin's storyline disproportionate attention. lol
âYou have learned substantiation? I thought your kind had forbidden that skill.â
Shallanâs using forbidden skills, huh? Â That tracks. I wonder why it's forbidden though . . .
âI said reality could be what I imagine it to be, but I donât actually want that. That would be⌠terrifyingâŚâ
Yes, Shallan. Yes, it would be.
âThis device points to something far in the distance. Something the Sibling called âthe Grand Knell, source of the Current, the death of a god.â â
And Gallant is bonded to a musicspren?? Hm.
âThat sprenâŚâ Adolin said. âIt was familiar somehow. Its eyes⌠Iâve seen it somewhere beforeâŚâ
. . . is this musicspren, Sureblood? I canât recall Adolin interacting with a musicspren before.
I wonder if the musicspren are connected to Rosharâs rhythms or the flute Wit gave to Kaladin.
âThatâs thousands of assault troops,â Adolin whispered from inside his illusion. He righted Gallantâs saddle after handing off his greatsword to one of Drehyâs squires. The scabbard was gone, and the equipment boxes had been knocked freeâAdolin grimaced as his hand lingered on the now vacant saddle hooks.
âThey have patrols watching to make sure no one spots them,â Shallan said. âItâs a secret strike force.â
âTheyâre sailing straight for Azimir,â Drehy said. âStorms⌠they probably came all the way from the Horneater Peaks, and the perpendicularity there. They must have been planning this for months.â
âAgreed,â Adolin said. âDrehy, you have to get us to Azimir as quickly as possible.â
Uh-oh. Aren't Kaladin, Szeth, and Syl stopping at Azimir before arriving at Shinovar? I guess we know when Kaladin will be picking up the spear again . . .
