1. People need to stop acting like PTW was more ableist than WTWN, because itās objectively not true. They need to actually relisten to the song and pay attention to the lyrics. Ocean was saying some wild ass shit in that. Ableism is a character flaw they both have/overcome. But you only give one of them a saving grace because she gets redemption? At least in PTW, Ocean doesnāt directly make pokes at her disabled choir mate. The fact that SOME people still think that OG Ocean is a unredeemable pile of sin is crazy. Donāt complain about one thing and completely ignore the other thing that has the same thing happening!
2. This fandom has a problem with a way they treat minority characters (Constance, Ricky, Misha, and Noel)
While Noel is definitely the most popular, he gets so water down to just him liking men that it erases the rest of his character. Like, you guys, Noel had fantasies about S/H because he was so numb in this town.
Misha is also popular, but these people sexualize the shit out of him and act like heās an idiot who can only say wacky catchphrases. I promise you guys, just because his English isnāt perfect doesnāt mean heās an idiot. Do you know any 17-18 year olds that can speak fluently in 3 languages and another one in general? It rubs me the wrong way that the only non-English person gets treated like heās an idiot by the fandom. Lastly, people saying the most gross things about him and using the excuse āHeās 18š„ŗā to justify it. If you used your thinking caps, you would realize that Misha wasnāt even 18 for a MONTH. YOU DONT BECOME AN ADULT OVERNIGHT.
Constance is just ignored and or undermined because she isnāt a conventionally attractive skinny white women. I canāt believe thereās people who blame her S/A on her and not the literal THIRTY TWO year old that KNEW she was vulnerable and took advantage of her anyway. Not to mention, the only reason WHY she didnāt stop him is because she felt so worthless and empty inside that she genuinely thought she deserved whatever bad thing happened to her. Also, why tf do people talk more about Gus being the Carnie rather than her whole monologue. LIKE SHUT TF UP, WE GET IT, THIS AINT ABOUT GUS HALPER. People also act like sheās a character AI Yaoi fan fic Wattpad writer. So, youāll listen to 2 lines that were meant to be taken as light hearted jokesā¦.but you donāt GAF about the 6 minute monologue where she admits to having severe depression to the point of S/H and almost Suicide? It just further cements how this fandom infantilizes Queer People.
And Poor Ricky gets the COMBINED treatment of all 3 of their issues. Heās treated like a baby that can do no wrong, which is extremely stereotypical and ableist. THE MUSICAL INDIRECTLY POINTS THIS OUT WITH HOW OCEAN TREATS RICKY AND HOW NERVED HE WAS WITH HER. He is sassy AF and during his first moments of speaking, he says a curse word. He also has deep thoughts about how the world works and his way to get around it. Like his speech in SABM or āThere are no accidentsā (Ik most of these string from just the 2016 version but LBFRā¦.aint 90% of those people have even seen any other version besides this one) Despite being babied, heās also sexualized and sometimes just use as a extension for sex jokes. Not only in SABM did Ricky view himself as an ADULT, but he was very PG about the way he went around it because at the end of the day, HES 17 YEARS OLD! Also, Ricky is not a Zoo. He doesnāt like cats, he likes cat PEOPLE. ZOLAR IS A PLANET THAT EVOLVED FROM CATS. AND ON TOP OF THAT, HES OFTEN COMPLETELY IGNORED BY THE FANDOM APART FROM HIS SONG.
This fandom needs to treat minorities in the musical better.
