War AU. Set during the Wutai war, I guess. Reno and Cloud are opposite sides. During an intense battle, Cloud- trying to prove himself- stumbles upon Reno emptying his gun into one of his trench buddies with a sick smile. Cloud charges him, Reno’s like ???? Goes to shoot him, but he’s out of bullets because the jackass emptied his fucking gun like an amateur. They wrestle in the mud, the blood, the guts. Exchanging blows. But a bright light momentarily blinds them, an explosion, they are knocked out. 

Cloud comes to as he’s being dragged by Reno. Covered in dirt and cuts. He notices Reno is singing a song from Cloud’s mountain town. But once the initial confusion goes away, he attacks Reno. Reno actually lets him get on top of him because he finds this shit just fucking hilarious. Cloud’s a little kid trying to act like a big boy, and Reno could, like, give a fuck about this war. So he’s laughing in Cloud’s face and Cloud’s now like ????? Which gives Reno a chance to knock him off. 

Reno dares Cloud to kill him. But Cloud asks instead “Why didn’t you kill me?”

“Why would I kill you?” Reno lights a cigarette at this point.

“Your orders!”

Reno gestures wildly at the wasteland around them. There’s nothing left. No signs of any soldiers. Reno continues, “Not sure which side dropped the bomb, but it wiped out both sides. So the ways I see it, the captains dead, the second in command is dead, third, forth, fifth. Which means, I’m in charged. And I’m ordering myself not to kill you.”

This confuses Cloud, and frankly Reno to- he’s never been sentimental or even kind. But Cloud being a jackass and charging him actually saved his life. But he doesn’t want this doe eyed kid to get any funny ideas about him so he continues. “Figure, I run into your side, I exchange your life for mine. I run into my side, we got a cute little prisoner to fucks with.”
