Oh, I'm just a simple girl, and when I found out that Stray Kids had a song called "Wolfgang", I immediately thought of "Wolf" by Exo and wrote this very long prompt
Enjoy ๐นญ
The Exo pack was extremely organized, with its own rules, and everyone had their role in the community.
Everything seemed normal until one day a mysterious scent reached them. It was a scent that warned them a new, young, and powerful pack had crossed forbidden boundaries. However, the scent vanished almost immediately.
After a moment of confusion, the pack returned to its daily life.
It was during his usual night run that the Exo alpha, Junmyeon, found himself facing a gray wolf. Without hesitation, he attacked the unknown alpha who was venturing into his territory.
Despite the young alpha's size and strength, it took Junmyeon only seconds to subdue him. A single bite to his side had knocked him unconscious, and now, beneath him, between his paws, was a naked boy. Junmyeon immediately returned to his human form.
He leaned over the boy, brushing his sweaty hair back from his face. He was the most beautiful boy he'd ever seen. The most beautiful alpha. The boy's scent was so strong and intense that Junmyeon had to move away, and only then did he notice the large bite wound on the boy's side. His bite.
Junmyeon gently picked him up and placed him on his back.
The mysterious alpha's head resting on his shoulder, the feel of his soft skin on his back, and the intense, wild scent that took Junmyeon's breath away. It was all too much to bear. Junmyeon turned back into a wolf and returned home with the boy on his back.
Junmyeon left the boy in the tool shed and ran into the house. Trying to be as quiet as possible, he grabbed a blanket and the necessary supplies to treat the wound.
After disinfecting the bite and adjusting the blanket, Junmyeon transformed back into a wolf and curled up next to the boy. It was a cold night, and Junmyeon feared a simple blanket wouldn't be enough.
When Junmyeon woke up, the boy was gone, but his scent filled the tool shed and beyond. Junmyeon quickly realized he smelled as if he had bathed in the other alpha's scent. He didn't want to wash it off, but he had to before the others started asking questions.
As the days passed, Junmyeon couldn't think of anything else. He spent his nights running through the woods, hoping to run into him, until fate brought them together again. The mysterious alpha's name was Chris, and from then on, the two spent every night together, running, talking, kissing, and discovering their darkest sides.
On one of these nights, lying on the grass under a sea of stars, Junmyeon and Chris decided to unite the two packs. The next morning, Chris and his pack, the Stray Kids, showed up at the Exos' house, causing chaos for both packs.
This forbidden love, difficult to understand, would drastically change the dynamics of the two groups. Jealousy, infatuations, arguments, abandonments, and returns would follow. The fate of the two packs rests in the hands of the two alphas.
Summary: With unexplainable occurrences on the rise, you begin investigating the random attacks on your own until someone else apparently has the same idea as well. And suddenly, you find yourself caught at the wrong time and place.

Thereโs always a strange irony to things you realize as you pour milk into the cup. It drips with ease and you stop once a sufficient amount has been added. Using the toothpick, you curve the cream into a crescent moon and slice the other little dots into stars before carefully delivering the drink to the woman sitting at her table.ย
She smiles and thanks you in return while you continue working on more orders. While not rare, the fact that someone else is thinking about the moon too canโt help but nudge at your suspicions. A lot of people like the moon but since finding that note, youโre wondering if thatโs also a sign of some sort. Especially after the other gift you received this morning.ย
As you headed to the cafรฉ during your usual walk you came across a squirrel that had been dashing up and down the trees before stopping short in front of you on the trail. You froze so as not to startle it, watching it look at you with a twitching tail only for it to scurry off. In its place was an acorn, one in pristine condition, the nut glimmering a pretty brown hue with small designs etched into the shell. Unsure of its meaning, you stuck it into your bag and continued on your way even more confused.ย
Between the will oโ the wisp and squirrel, youโre half expecting some other person or creature to deliver yet another cryptic message.
The note is sitting on your desk at home, tucked behind your books. It surely had to have come from the will oโ the wisp that you found in the storage room but it couldnโt have been the one to write it itself. According to your quick online search, these phantom creatures donโt exactly communicate with others, instead leading people astray in the fog. Yet this one seems to understand you. Maybe itโs just a messenger, but for who? This mysterious WW isnโt recognizable unless the initials are for a pseudonym of sorts. Yoongi was the only other person there that night yet he had been on his laptop the whole time.ย
โAre you going to finish the order or keep watching it blend into mush?โ Elanor asks over the loud whirring of the blender thatโs currently mixing the coffee.ย
You quickly pull the container free and serve the drink into a cup with ice cubes before handing it off. โSorry, got distracted for a second,โ you say in a hurry.ย
โWith what, the blender?โ She jokes.ย
โNo,โ you shake your head, โjust getting lost in my head.โย
Elanor reorganizes the desserts thatโve gotten knocked around in the display case, resetting them to look presentable. โYeah, but about what?โ
Nothing you could possibly say out loud in public. โJust about my walk this morning. I saw a cute squirrel running around and burying nuts for winter.โย
She gives you an odd look. โRight.โ Before she can prod any further, a woman dressed in a business suit quickly walks in on the phone and orders an espresso and a couple of scones.ย
While Elanor takes over making the drink, you fetch the food and ring up her order. Inadvertently you end up catching bits and pieces of her conversation. โYes, sir, I just wrapped up the interview with the victim in Greenbriar and grabbing a coffee before I head to the second one now.โ The woman pauses, listening quietly to whoeverโs talking.ย
You slowly ease the chocolate and lemon scones into the bag, doing your best not to noisily crinkle the bag too much. What does she mean by second one? Second victim? Thereโs only been talk of one attack. Maybe itโs not the same case. Greenbriar is all the way in the next county.ย
โDepending on what this one says, I think itโll determine if thereโs a connection between the attacks. But I believeโyes, well, I already have those scheduled with experts to verify,โ she sighs to herself before clenching and unclenching her fist, โyes, Iโll schedule some more meetings and look into it.โ Hanging up her phone, she rubs her forehead and lets out another sigh.ย
โBoss being a little overbearing?โ You guess, giving her a sympathetic smile while handing her the drink and bag of food.ย
โYep. I finally start getting things on track for this story and now my supervisor wants me to interview paranormal investigators or something to see what they think about these attacks in the woods,โ she explains, taking a careful sip of her coffee. โIโm well aware of the importance of hearing from both aspects, but he wants to spin it as some spooky ghost story.โย
โThatโs certainly quite a take,โ you note, drawing a snort from Elanor whoโs actively listening in nearby at the register but not engaging in the conversation. โSo is it true thereโs been two attacks?โ You lower your voice as you ask.ย
The woman nods while typing out something on her phone. โSupposedly. Thatโs why Iโm out here to verify and see if thereโs any connection between the two cases. Though this is a little ways out to be honest.โ Her phone begins ringing again and she answers it. โYes, sir?โ She lets out another sigh before rolling her eyes. โYes, Iโll bring you a banana muffin.โย
Youโre already putting one into another bag by the time she hangs up. โHere, itโs on the house. Consider the muffin payment for having to do the runaround with him,โ you tell her, giving her the additional paper sack.
โThanks.โ Setting her phone briefly on the counter, you notice her GPS is open and leading to her next location. Must be the second victim. While sheโs still digging around in her purse, you take another look at the coordinates and easily recognize the address thatโs rather close by. The woman, having found some spare change, drops the coins and handful of bills into the tip jar before gathering her things to leave.ย
You watch her step out the door before glancing at the clock. โHey Elanor, can you cover for me this afternoon?โย
The two story Air BNB house sits atop the brick foundation with a short stack of stairs leading up to the porch. Neatly trimmed hedges line the front with a decaying birdhouse that hangs on the lone tree. A fresh patch of grass grows over the plot of dirt where the blooming lilies and poppies once used to be, the colorful flowers always drawing your attention on your walk home from school as a kid.ย
Before this became a vacation home, it used to be owned by Mrs. Reyes. She was the librarian for decades and so you were a familiar face since you were always studying there. She gave you the offer of coming by once or twice a week to help clean her two story home as dust easily collected all throughout the many rooms.ย
Itโs still strange being here in quite a few years. While you hadnโt planned on investigating the attack, after hearing about the other one from the reporter, youโre wondering if this really could be the work of something supernatural. Sure you could just tell Wolfy about it, but what can he do besides keep guarding the forest? Itโs not like he can go into the city to investigate or talk with people. At the very least you can be lending a helping hand in the meantime.ย
The faded white railing creaks as you use it to help steady yourself while you climb the steps. You knock on the wooden door while the wind briefly picks up and stirs the wind chimes hanging at the far end, the dull silver butterflies swaying in the air as the metal clinks faintly. Otherwise, it remains completely quiet. Normally, classical music would be seeping through the cracked open windows, but thereโs only the swaying tree branches that serve as your ambience.ย
Thereโs the sound of fast-paced footsteps and the door swings open, revealing blonde hair tied into an unkempt bun. If the brown-rimmed glasses arenโt already recognizable, then the burgundy cardigan draped over her shoulders surely is. What are the odds of you running into the rude customers from the coffee shop? If memory serves you correctly, you think her friend had called her Diane.ย
โCan I help you?โ She sighs. Dark bags hang just below her eyes as she practically stares through you.ย
โHi, Iโm looking for Miranda Hutchins.โย ย
โWhoโs asking?โ
โIโm Y/N and I work with the local paper, the Hallow Howler,โ you answer with a smile. โI donโt mean to intrude but I was hoping to speak with her about what happened in the woods.โ Clearly you donโt work for the paper, but you figure at least itโs credible enough to investigate further into this mess. Better than saying youโre a barista with an apparent knack for sleuthing.ย
She squints her eyes before asking, โDonโt you work at the coffee shop?โย
Of course. โI work there part-time, but this is my main job,โ you smoothly respond.ย
Diane stares back, eyeing you over while silently contemplating if youโre worth listening to. โCome in,โ she eventually sighs, opening the door wider, revealing the foyer that used to be decorated with all sorts of landscape paintings but is now bare.ย
As you step inside the warm house getting away from the chill air, you take a moment to examine the place you once knew. While the faded floral wallpaper has been updated with a fresh coat of green paint, the rest of the house looks about the same as you remember. At the entrance there are still little end tables with a vase of fake wildflowers on each one. You canโt help but notice the thin strings of cobwebs that decorate a few of the petals. At least the appliances have all been upgraded as you catch a glimpse of the kitchen from your position. The nineteenth century vintage stovetop with its multiple knobs and drawers is now replaced with a more modern type. Even the retro mint colored refrigerator has been replaced by a fancy silver one that has a touch screen on the door.ย
Gesturing for you to follow, Diane takes you to the cozy living room, where a red couch and armchair sit in the middle facing away from the entrance. Against the wall, a new flatscreen tv sits on a stand, having replaced the old fashioned one as well. The channel is on some celebrity news show and you see someone with their legs propped up on the red velvet ottoman, bare feet sticking out from beneath the quilted blanket.ย
โDiane, was that the delivery person with our takeout?โ The person asks, turning their head to look over and your eyes end up meeting as you recognize the other woman who barked both their orders at you. โWhyโs the barista here?โย
A part of you is almost impressed she can remember all the people she yells at.ย
โShe works part time there but also works with the local paper and wants to do an interview with you,โ her friend explains, coming closer. โDo you need anything while Iโm up?โย
โYeah, some more water,โ Miranda holds up the glass and Diane takes it before heading to the kitchen. You awkwardly shift on your feet, soles creating imprints on the faded beige carpet. โAre you just gonna stand there or actually ask whatever questions you supposedly have?โ She snaps without looking away from the screen.ย
Moving forward, you position yourself beside the couch before easing down into the side thatโs closest to her. You pull out your phone, ensuring the notes with your questions are ready. โI appreciate you taking the time to talk with me. Iโm Y/N by the way,โ you introduce yourself, not that she actually pays much attention as she continues watching her show. โAre you sure youโre comfortable talking about this again?โ You tentatively ask.ย
She finally glances over to stare at you, her blue eyes rimmed red, the dark smudges beneath them tinted with exhaustion. Her black hair is tied in a messy ponytail with some strands sticking out in various directions. Even her clothes, though certainly some high-end fashion brand, are slightly disheveled. Her fuchsia long sleeve shirt is rumpled and seemingly drowns her within in the fabric. โYeah,โ she scoffs. โItโs not like I havenโt told my story over a dozen times at this point.โย
โI just wanted to make sure,โ you respond politely, keeping the customer service voice enabled before your mouth gets the better of you. โCould you confirm when and where this happened exactly?โ
โMaple Berry Way at about 9:30pm,โ she recites just as Diane comes back with her water, setting it down on the little side table beside her before going to sit at the other end of the couch.ย
Your fingers quickly type in the information. โAnd what were you doing there?โย
โHiking.โ Next to you, Diane hesitates to which Miranda gives a stern shake of her head in return.ย
Resisting the urge to press further about their silent conversation, you focus on the next question. โDid you mostly stick to the main trails or did you go off the path?โย
โStuck to the main trail, obviously,โ Miranda scoffs.ย
โIโm just asking questions to better understand what happened. Either way Iโm not here to judge,โ you reassure, silently noting her stiff posture. โSo you were hiking on the main trails and then what?โย
Reaching for her glass, she takes a sip of water before setting it back down. โAfter I finished, I was on my way back to the car when I heard noises in the bushes. Next thing I know I was being mauled,โ she answers, shifting in her seat.ย
โCould you describe what attacked you?โย
โNot really, I was too busy screaming and trying to get away. But it was big, whatever it was.โย
โDo you know what kind of animal?โ
A shrug. โSome kind of wolf I guess.โ
Your fingers stutter in their movements, disrupting the rhythm as you clear your throat. โAny distinct features, something that maybe stood out to you?โย
Miranda readjusts again before shaking her head. Absentmindedly, she begins fidgeting with her necklace, fingers softly rubbing the sapphire pendant. โNo, like I said, I was just trying to get away.โย
โThere wasnโt anything that seemed odd about it?โย
โWhat do you mean?โ She freezes, fingers still touching her jewelry, eyeing you strangely in return.ย
Youโre debating whether or not to outright ask before eventually saying, โLike, did it ever stand on its hind legs? Or you know, just attack in an abnormal way? Something that wasnโt quite natural?โ Raising suspicions wonโt do any good but at the same time she may have seen something at least. And if you earn any weird looks in return, then youโre just some believer of the supernatural, thatโs all.ย
Her eyes narrow as she sits upright from her slumped position. โHowโd you know about that? Look all I said in that police report was that it was a big animal. Iโm not some superstitious person that chases shadows in the night, okay? So donโt you dare write me off as crazy or anything.โ As though catching herself a moment too late, she clamps her jaw, pivoting her head towards the bay windows that look out into the front lawn.ย
Crazy wouldnโt be the word youโd use to describe her, or anyone for that matter. Belligerent or demanding, sure. But even if you were actually writing a story about this, you wouldnโt use those words either. You already know what itโs like having your theories dismissed by one person, a whole audience would be so much worse than that. โI wouldnโt do that. Iโm here to listen to whatever you want to share. Just because something canโt be easily explained doesnโt mean that itโs not real or isnโt true. And who knows, you might not be the only one either.โย
โThat other reporter said she was investigating another case too,โ Diane quietly adds, her leg shaking as her bare foot taps the floor in rapid succession.ย
โSee?โ You gently encourage, setting your phone down in between your legs as you lean forward slightly, trying to bring Mirandaโs attention back to you. โThis other person mightโve had a similar experience. If so, then itโd probably be a reliefโfor both of you, knowing that at least thereโs someone else out there who experienced the same thing.โย
Breaking her gaze away from the window, she faces you once more, scowling though maybe not from your line of questioning. Uncertainty is clearly evident yet curiosity also lingers in her blue eyes. โHave you talked to this other person?โ
โNo, not yet,โ you say, desperately hoping she doesnโt shut down the interview as a result of your lack of information involving this other case.ย
She chews the inside of her cheek, contemplating something as her eyes shift to Diane before returning to you. โDo you know what the wolfman looks like?โ
The sudden question takes you by surprise as your brows knit together though youโre sure your eyes widen in response. โYeah,โ you answer slowly. โBasically an extremely hairy or furry man with claws and teeth. Goes on murderous rampages, involuntarily transforms on a full moon, and is vulnerable to silver.โย
She sniffs in response, partially resembling a hint of a laugh. โYou almost sound like some kind of expert.โ
You canโt stop your own laugh from escaping. If only she knew. Youโre certainly more so compared to others. โThanks, but not exactly. Just a fan of the supernatural really.โย
โAnyway, basically like that, but without all the fur.โย
โSo a person with wolf like features sharp claws, teeth, and all?โ You try envisioning this creature, but the resulting image you conjure up doesnโt quite fit. All you really picture is Gollum from Lord of the Rings though more vicious and animalistic.ย
Miranda grimaces, struggling for words. โIn a way, but I said werewolf because thatโs the closest thing it reminded me of except it wasnโt quite that. The features werenโt fully human and it just looked. . .evil.โ
Evil? It makes you wonder if this is a similar situation to your run-in with the goblins. A will oโ the wisp had led you right to them that night, could the same one or one of its friends have done the same to her too? โDid you happen to notice anything else strange or peculiar that night? Like any glowing lights or maybe a weird sound?โ
She stares at the carpet, lost in thought before slowly shaking her head though she doesnโt seem completely sure. From beside you, Diane stiffens and sharply inhales. โWhat about shining lights?โ She softly murmurs, drawing both you and Mirandaโs attention though the dark-haired woman catches her eyes. Both exchange looks with each other, an exclusively private conversation thatโs between them. Diane silently pleads to her friend only for it to be disregarded by her friendโs hard expression in return.ย
It prompts your memory to recall a crucial piece of information from the few articles youโve been reading about the incident. โWait, were both of you out there that night?โ All the reports indicated there was only one victim.ย
โNo.โ
โYes,โ Diane softly answers at the same time. Miranda sends her a scathing glare to which she helplessly responds with, โWe already told the police.โย
โSo? Sheโs with the press and if this gets leaked, youโre screwed.โย
You glance between the two of them. โWait, what do you mean?โ
Diane ignores the warning look Miranda sends her way. โMy father is well-known. Actually heโs the CEO of Keaton Enterprises and word wouldโve spread quickly if the media found out about the attack,โ she explains, despite her friendโs obvious pissed-off facial expression.ย
โI wonโt say anything,โ you blurt, hoping they donโt get suspicious of your quick reassurance. While you truly do wish to prove your integrity, you also hope they donโt catch the hint of fear in your tone at the realization that her father runs the company your dad works for now. โEspecially if you want your identity kept a secret. And if everyone knows itโs just one victim, we can stick with that,โ you promise and Miranda rolls her eyes in return.ย
She shifts in her seat before taking another sip from her glass. โLike weโd believe you. Youโre not the first journalist to spout supposed honest shit like that.โย
โBut I mean it,โ you insist, โyouโre identities arenโt important. I just want to hear from you directly to prevent misinformation from spreading about what attacked you.โ At your mention of the attack, both women glance at one another before awkwardly looking away. โYou can be honest with me. Iโm not the paparazzi. I just want to know the truth.โย
Surprisingly, itโs Miranda that speaks first, her voice somewhat low. โWe could barely believe our own eyes.โย
โOur minds can play tricks on us, but when our imaginations run wild that can make something seemingly normal a true nightmare.โ
She shakes her head, black hair whipping furiously. โThatโs what weโve been telling ourselves, that the dark shadows were to blame and that it was just a normal predator. But it wasnโt.โย
โAnd thatโs okay, itโs why Iโm here. Just try the best you can,โ you encourage them. โMaybe letโs start with what you both were really doing out there that night.โ When they visibly stiffen, youโre quick to reassure them again, โNo personal information will be published without your consent.โย
Both of them still look apprehensive before Diane sighs. โWe were out drinking. Just a bottle of vodka between the two of us, nothing to make us too drunk. After having a busy day, we just wanted to let off some steam. While we were out there, we started hearing rustling in the forest. First it was quiet and far away, but as we started walking back to the main trail so we could get to the parking lot, something came running out and hit Miranda.โย
โCould you describe the approximate size?โ You ask.ย
โBig,โ Miranda answers. โProbably similar to a bear but resembling more of a wolf.โย
โExcept it stood on two legs.โ
โYeah.โ
A humanoid figure but with animalistic features, no wonder they kept saying werewolf. โThatโs why you mentioned werewolves.โย
โNot that it mattered because the cops are convinced we were just drunk off our asses and imagining it. Well, thatย Iย was too drunk,โ she amends, a sharp edge in her voice and you catch Diane wince slightly.ย
โDo you remember any particular features that it had? Face, build, things like that?โย
โLike, a hairless werewolf, I guess.โ Diana grimaces in thought. โMaybe it was actually thin fur but the face looked sort of human while the body had long limbs with all the claws and teeth. Hence the wolfman comparison.โย
โWhat did it do next?โ You ask, still typing furiously on your phone.ย
From her seat, Miranda scoffs, โWhat do you think? It attacked us. Or me, specifically.โ She points to her gauze-wrapped leg thatโs propped on the ottoman.ย
โMiranda,โ Diane softly scolds and turns to address you. โWhat she means is thatย thingย didnโt hesitate once it saw us. Maybe we caught it by surprise when it came out of nowhere,โ she guesses, โbut there wasnโt any fear, just anger.โย
โIt couldโve possibly been hungry or rabid,โ you theorize.ย
They shake their heads. โNo, I donโt think so,โ Diane says to which you look up in confusion. โWhen it bit Miranda, I slammed the vodka bottle over its head but it didnโt even react. Only when it kept biting at her did it eventually stop before taking off.โย
Your fingers remain hovering above the screen of your phone and they helplessly shrug at your perplexed look. โIt just stopped?โย
โI know, it doesnโt make sense but thatโs what happened. Something got it to stop, but nothing else was out there besides us. It was like a spell or the bloodlust was broken.โย
At this rate, you wouldnโt be surprised if a witch or warlock were suddenly added to the mix. Will oโ the wisps, werewolves, and witches, oh my. โCould this be related to what you said earlier?โ You look towards Diane. โAbout the shining thing you saw?โ
โMaybe. Before it showed up, I thought I saw something shining or reflecting off the moonlight somewhere among the trees just before it attacked. But for all I know it was my eyes playing tricks on me.โย
โThe cops sure seemed to think so,โ Miranda mutters.ย
โHow bad are your injuries?โ You ask her, looking at her bundled form.ย
She carefully eases the blanket back, revealing several long scratches that range from her thigh to her shin. In the middle of her thigh is a dark purple bruise.ย
โAnd is that where you were bit?โ You ask, leaning a little closer but thereโs no teeth marks anywhere to be found.ย
โExactly where that disgusting bruise is at. And before you ask, yes, they didnโt find any cuts either. They think it probably just got close to breaking the skin but I know what I felt,โ she insists. โMy flesh was being torn apart.โย
Despite her claims, her skin shows a different story. Maybe in the moment it felt like her skin was being torn open, but the lacerations arenโt actually that deep. โDoes your leg feel weird where you got bit?โย
โNot really, justโฆitchy,โ she responds, her fingers automatically reach to scratch but she stops when Dianeโs about to intercept. โI know, I know.โ She gently massages the area instead. โI insisted they give me a rabies shot and everything else just in case.โย
One can only hope that modern medicine will be enough to combat any diseases from possible supernatural creatures.ย
On your day off, you head to the opposite end of town towards Maple Berry Way in the hopes of finding anything useful about this strange creature that attacked the women. Maybe the police had missed something or believed it wasnโt crucial to the case. As you ride your bike, you stay on the sidewalk even though cars hardly ever come down this street as itโs rather secluded and takes you away from the heart of town. Even hikers and those who enjoy the outdoors tend to take other trails that are more lively and frequented.
As you reach the entrance, you hop off your bike and leave it resting against a tree thatโs behind one of the few weathered-down benches near the road. No other cars are in the parking lot, leaving the area vacant like usual. Your feet leave indents in the sinking gravel as it throws your gait off-kilter until you reach the flat area where the path begins. Starting your trek down the dirt path, you follow the map on your phone where Miranda and Diane had marked the general area of the attack as best as they could remember, continuing toward the blue dot while looking for any evidence as you do.ย
Most of the trees are almost bare, with only a handful of brown leaves left in patches on some branches. An old wooden sign sits at an angle, the arrow pointing downwards instead of the direction itโs supposed to be in as you walk by. You canโt even make out the original writing as the letters are faded.ย
Up ahead, you catch a glimpse of a little orange flag peeking out from beneath the overgrown grass slightly away from the trail. You inspect the ground where remnants of shattered glass are still scattered about. This must be where they broke the bottle over the creatureโs head. Avoiding the shards, you step carefully around the space, looking for any other clues but thereโs not even a trace of blood whatsoever. You continue walking around, careful not to disturb any of the crime scene, but everything seems relatively normal. If they hadnโt told you about the bottle, you wouldโve just assumed people were out here drinking and accidentally broke it. Basically normal.ย
โCan I help you?โ A deep voice asks, startling you with a jolt. Turning around, you find two guys standing in dark clothes, the shine of police badges peek out from behind their jackets. Leave it to you to run into the cops. The one who spoke has pitch black hair perfectly styled to the side, revealing his smooth forehead and the arched brow thatโs lifted, awaiting an answer. Beside him stands another man whoโs slightly shorter with a mop of dark brown hair that makes him appear rather young.ย
โHi, um, Iโm just here to investigate the recent attack. The crime scene has been cleared so the public is allowed in now,โ you answer, hoping it sounds as confident and professional as you try to seem.ย
โYes, but our specific department still needs to gather more information so if you could come back tomorrow weโd be most appreciative,โ the taller one explains, giving you an apologetic yet polite smile in return.
While he may be actually telling the truth, thereโs no doubt that him or his department doesnโt exactly want you snooping around the area. Even if they havenโt found anything, this guy is smooth and most likely a pro at deflection. You wouldnโt be surprised if heโs in charge of public relations for the station.ย
Before you can respond, rustling sounds from nearby as another person appears from amongst the trees. โHey, Namjoon, should we split up and check the northeastern area forโwhatโre you doing here?โ The familiar voice wonders, original question abruptly replaced by another one. Yoongi, dressed in his usual hoodie carries a backpack over his shoulder, stops abruptly upon seeing you. His tone is hard, annoyed almost, so different compared to his usual demeanor.
โI could ask you the same thing,โ you reply.ย ย
โWeย know each other,โ is his pointed answer. โBesides, my help was requested by the department. Did they give you the same clearance?โย
โNo,โ you scoff, fishing a small paper from your pocket and briefly flashing it to them. โItโs my journalist pass, and technically we donโt need them since the crime scene is currently clear now.โย
His brows raise at that, humor glinting in his eyes as though he can clearly see right through your lie. โYouโre a journalist too?โ
The shorter man besides his tall partner with the deep voice smiles excitedly. โYou work at the Hallow Howler too? Thatโs cool, so do I! Iโm new so I donโt think weโve met. What department do you work in?โ
Youโve got to be kidding. Luck just canโt give you enough of a break. โActually Iโm more of an intern,โ you backpedal, โmy momโs the journalist.โย Was, your brain silently corrects. Technically you did borrow her press pass just for a moment like this. As long as they donโt notice that the expiration date is almost a decade old. โIโm just here inspecting the area while she follows some other leads.โย
โOh thatโs cool! Whatโs her name?โ The same guy asks, seemingly oblivious to your deceptions. Next to him, Yoongi faintly smirks, also expectantly waiting to hear your answer.ย
While you say her name, you frantically think of something else to switch topics to before you somehow slip up. โSo is there much evidence besides the broken glass?โ
โThis is still technically an open investigation, we canโt disclose any of that yet.โ Yoongi interrupts before the journalist can answer.ย
โOnce we fill out our report and get all the details, weโd be happy to release it to the public.โ The tall guy, Namjoon you presume, also responds.
โThen can I at least get statements from you, your partner, and yourโฆassistant?โย
โYeah, though weโre still searching for evidence on what kind of animal this mightโve been which Iโm sure is what youโre mainly wanting to know,โ the shorter guy answers remorsefully.
Namjoon clears his throat. โI know thatโs what everyone is most concerned about and weโre working quickly to figure that out. Youโll even be the first to know if thatโs any consolation.โย
โDoes that have anything to do with checking the northeast area?โ You point out and Yoongi narrows his eyes.ย
โWeโre just covering our bases.โ
โAre you checking that direction to rule out nothing came from the supposed legendary dark forest?โ You guess.ย
While you know your question would throw out any credibility as a serious journalist, the sudden widening of the shorter guyโs eyes is enough to send your mind into hyperawareness. Even Namjoon inquisitively glances over to Yoongi whoโs glaring you down.ย
โAll those fairytales are seriously getting to your head,โ he tells you snidely.ย
โYeah, then it must be spreading because even the victim isnโt exactly sure what she saw.โย
โBecause she was drunk, terrified and in complete darkness,โ he dismisses.ย
โEither way,ย somethingย dangerous is out there.โย
Namjoon hesitates before interjecting, โIโd be happy to talk with you privately once we finish up here if thatโs alright. But heโs right, the dark forest is just a myth.โย
If only that were true. โMaybe youโre right. And thatโs very much appreciated but I think Iโll follow some other leads in the meantime. I understand this area is closed off so Iโll make my way to Briarโs Creek,โ you politely answer. While not too far away, you have to head northeast to get there and the others seem to know this as well. Even if heโs throwing you a bone, youโre not biting. You doubt youโd get much out of him anyway. Thereโs too much authority within his tone, this man has definitely done plenty of damage control and PR speeches.ย
โUnfortunately, none of the forest is considered completely safe as we donโt know where this supposed creature is,โ Namjoon says. โWeโd advise not wandering alone. That goes for everyone, even if itโs overcautious on our part.โย
โBut what about for you all? Thatโs a lot of land to investigate and thereโs only three of you here. Isnโt that just as dangerous for you too?โย
โWe have time as well as weapons for self-defense,โ Yoongi reassures though a precursory glance shows none to be openly found. โTheyโre concealed if thatโs what youโre wondering.โย
โIf temporarily assisting us with this part of the investigation will put your mind, and questions, at ease, we can allow that,โ Namjoon amends much to everyoneโs surprise. Yoongi sends him a dark look but doesnโt object.ย
At this point, youโll take whatever information you can get. โActually that would be great, thanks.โย
โIt makes things even,โ the shorter guy adds, โand youโre more than welcome to come with me.โย
โPerhaps you should head east with Yoongi,โ Namjoon suggests to you. โJimin and I can check the north since thereโs less pathways.โย
You spare a glance down at your shoes, just an old pair of sneakers that have certainly seen better days. Probably shouldโve gone with actual hiking boots. โSounds good,โ you tell him, smiling before following after Yoongi whoโs already on the move.ย
While the other two head in the adjacent direction, you walk after Yoongi as you try to catch up. The quiet ambience of the woods and two sets of footsteps are the only sounds for a few minutes before you bluntly ask, โWhy the cold shoulder?โย
His face pinches at your question before he uneasily looks away. โIโm not giving you the cold shoulder.โย
โFine, then whyโre so grumpy?โ Heโs never been this cold with you except for maybe the first time you met after he caught you falling in the library. Itโs not like him, and it makes you wonder what could possibly be bothering him. Unless he was sour before, something about your presence here has him upset.ย
Sighing, he shoves his hands in his pockets and hunches his shoulders while ducking beneath to avoid a low hanging branch. โBecause Iโd rather be somewhere else than here on some wild goose chase,โ he admits. โAnd everyone seems convinced thereโs some monster in the woods when itโs probably just a wild animal.โย
โThose two seem like they could handle this on their own. Why do they need you?โ Itโs not a scathing remark, but genuine curiosity that drives your questioning.ย
โI told you, I know my way around these woods. Better than they do as theyโre both still new and getting acquainted with the area.โย
โSeems like you all know each other pretty well,โ you comment, struggling to watch your footing while also trying to keep up with him.ย
Yoongi stays quiet for a moment before admitting, โWe live together for the time being.โย
โSo this is more of a favor and not an extra side gig.โย
โBasically,โ he nods, attention more so focused on his surroundings as he scans the woods. Besides the occasional draft of wind, hardly anything stirs except for the sporadic falling leaves. โJust helping them out since itโs the least I can do.โ Yoongi glances over at you. โWhatโs your motive? Honestly.โย
You point a finger at yourself. โMe?โ Shrugging, youโre about crouch beneath another low branch but Yoongi lifts it, holding it up so you can easily walk under. โThanks. Look, I just want to get to the bottom of this before more people get hurt.โ And to also figure this out before the wrong people come investigating the woods and end up finding a certain werewolf.ย
โThatโs why thereโs an ongoing investigation. Do you not trust law enforcement to take care of it?โ
โNo.โ
Your immediate answer catches him off-guard as he lets out an involuntary laugh. Itโs the first smile youโve seen today, resembling his relaxed demeanor youโve already grown used to. โOkay, fair point. And I get it, I really do. But thatโs why Namjoonโs department was called in to provide assistance. They specialize in complicated animal attacks like this one,โ he mutters, apparently already expecting your response.ย
โSo thereย isย something going on,โ you confirm.ย
He rubs the bridge of his nose and runs his fingers along his cheekbones. โNo, theyโre here to determine the exact cause. And before you ask, no, they canโt confirm anything yet until they rule out all factors.โย
โBut itโs complicated enough that a whole department specialized in strange cases has to come out and determine what happened.โ Yoongi looks away while you mull over your own words. Department specialized in strange cases. If magic exists, and something supernatural is possibly the culprit, then are the cops also aware of it? How deep would it all go? Is that why Namjoon, and whatever department he represents, is here? To determine if a werewolf or something else is responsible for the attack?
And then a horrifying thought comes crashing into focus. A shiver cascades along your nerve endings and it feels as if a bucket of ice water is poured down your back. Is this department specialized in hunting supernatural creatures? What if theyโre here for Wolfy?ย
You glance over at Yoongi whoโs staring intensely off into the distance, seemingly listening for something. He did say they have concealed weapons for protection, apparently himself included. โSee anything suspicious?โ You wonder, drawing his attention away from the tree line as he jerks his head to you.ย
โNo. Sorry, got lost in thought.โย
โSo I canโt help but wonder,โ you start, choosing your words carefully while he waits, โdo you really think the victim was exaggerating what she experienced?โ
Your eyes meet and hold his and you see a flicker of remorse from within before he exhales. โSaying yes would be easier, less complicated,โ he admits, โbut no, I think she saw something that terrified her. But assuming itโs supernatural or anything like that is a bit of a stretch, donโt you think?โ
For once, youโre willing to accept his dose of reality. โActually, yeah, I agree. Thereโs got to be some sort of logical explanation, we just have to find it.โ And get them to leave your wolf alone, damn it.ย
โExactly.โ
โI mean, given the victimโs description, it could just be someone in a costume that attacked her.โย
โWhat?โ He glances at you in confusion until realization dawns. โOh, did you interview the victim by pretending to be some journalist? Did you flash them the expired press pass and she just didnโt think twice?โ Yoongi smirks, shaking his head while he deftly climbs over a log.ย
How could he actually see the date standing several feet away? You set your jaw, refusing to be sidetracked by his rather astute observation. โLook, you may think this is being blown out of proportion and just a waste of time, but there are others at risk. I have friends in the area that may be in danger.โ You follow after him, hoisting yourself up the log with a grunt of exertion. He offers you his hand, patiently waiting while you crouch down before grasping it.ย
With a swift tug, Yoongi pulls you forward and you yelp at the sudden shift in weight, falling directly into him. Mind going blank, you barely have time to process that youโre in his arms before he sets you down. โPretty noble of you to go all private detective the moment your town is in possible danger,โ he notes, releasing you before slowly backing away.ย
Even through your clothes, you can still feel the warmth of his fingers that grazed along your waist before you shake your head in an attempt to reorient yourself. โOh, please,โ you scoff. โIโm just a concerned citizen if anything. And besides, this is a problem for the wildlife because if people start assuming itโs a dangerous wolf, then any local wolves in the area could be killed,โ you say, your thoughts automatically returning to Wolfy. Supernatural strength or not, the general public wouldnโt take kindly to him. Thereโd be mass panic and hunters would be out in full force.ย
โIโm pretty sure your wolves will be fine,โ he answers.
โNot if scared people take matters into their own hands,โ you counter.
After passing beneath another drooping branch, the ground shifts, tilting downwards with cracks of rocks and roots protruding out sporadically. Both of you take the earthen made steps carefully, doing your best not to slip. Yoongi stays beside you, keeping his arm just within reach should you stumble. Once youโre near the bottom where the floor levels off, does he finally answer. โY/N. Itโll be fine. You have nothing to worry about, trust me.โ
When you reach the flat surface, you continue walking until a flurry of crunched leaves come from just ahead. Yoongi rushes in front of you and you watch as a cute, little dormouse scurries across before diving into another pile of large auburn leaves, squeaking as it does so. He lets out a huff and you notice that his hands are curled open, as though he were about to take a swipe at it.ย
โThen why are you nervous?โ You wonder, to which he immediately relaxes his stance and looks at you from over his shoulder.ย
โIโm not,โ he laughs.ย
โWell, youโre not completely at ease either.โ Realization dawns. โThatโs why youโre upset, isnโt it?โ
He shakes his head, walking forward until you grab a hold of his sleeve, forcing him to face you. Yoongi stops, standing still as he uses his shoe to lightly kick at the pile of dead leaves. โNo, Iโm frustrated that thereโs no definitive answer as to what exactly did this. Itโs hard to tell based off what theyโve found which isnโt much.โ You continue to skeptically glare at him before he lets out an exasperated sigh upon sensing it. โOkay, fine. Itย isย a little worrying. Is that the response youโre looking for?โย
Keeping a tight grip on his sleeve so he canโt turn or walk away, you ask, โWhat do actually think did this?โย
โNot a wolf, if thatโs what youโre worried about,โ he answers. Heโs looking at you now, unwavering and without a trace of doubt. โAnd what about you?โ
Suddenly, you feel shy almost, having your questioning redirected back at you. His dark umber eyes feel as though theyโre piercing straight into your mind. Like heโs searching for something. Confirmation? Honesty? Youโre not sure. But itโs you that ultimately breaks eye contact before you release your hold of him. โSame,โ is all you say.ย
โGlad weโre on the same page then,โ Yoongi notes, moving in between the clusters of trees.ย
Itโs annoying that he can just render you speechless with hardly any effort. And from such a simple question too.ย
โAre you coming?โ He calls from up ahead and you rush after him before you get left behind.ย
Huffing, you try keeping up, doing your best to not trip or get caught on any stray roots. โSlow down, will you?โย
Though your complaint is cut off by your own yelp as you stumble unexpectedly. You flail, pushing your arms out so you donโt faceplant into the ground. Instead, a hand grabs your elbow and you spin as your falling momentum gets realigned before you pivot, swinging directly into a warm body. You grab onto Yoongi, his other hand now holding your waist to keep you from falling backwards. Your hands had automatically reached out for support and now youโre clutching onto his shoulders as well.ย
Others would consider this a romantic pose, sweet, yet this feels. . .comfortable. โWhyโre you really out here? Even if youโre a concerned citizen, people donโt usually just start getting involved themselves.โย
For a minute this felt briefly comfortable. โTo look for answers,โ you say.ย
โWhy not just let the people do their job?โ
Of course you should just let the professionals handle it. But then they might find out a werewolf has been living in the forest, so close to civilization. A part of you wishes you could just tell him the real reason, but he probably wonโt believe you. And even if he did, should you even be sharing secrets like this anyway? Despite that, the words are practically at your lips, on the verge of being spoken aloud. But instead you swallow them. โThey could miss something and not know that itโs important.โ
โAnd you would?โย
โNo, but I have a friend who might. They know their way around these woods too.โย
โAnd you trust them?โ
โYes.โ You say it so fast that it surprises even yourself.ย
The moment the word leaves your lips, you watch something shift within his eyes. Itโs like a droplet of caramel hitting a pool of coffee and then spreading out, replacing the dark brown with a lighter shade.ย
You donโt even realize that your hands have moved until you feel the ends of his long hair grazing along your fingertips. They almost have a mind of their own, acting of their own accord as they reach up and get lost in his head of hair, feeling the soft strands. Flinching, you pull away and the sudden movement breaks the spell weaving you two together as you both let go.ย
Looking down at your feet, you find something metallic hidden between the blades of grass. You get closer, bending down to investigate the strange object and Yoongi crouches beside you as well.ย Itโs a statue thatโs about a foot long, depicting an angel with feathered wings open wide. In her left hand she holds a lantern while in her right is a staff with a crystalline orb attached at the top. Down at her feet are a bunch of flowers. Inspecting it closer, you see thereโs writing engraved at the base that readsย Radiance Everlasting.ย
โRadiance Everlasting?โ You murmur the words aloud. Itโs a pretty statue, but itโs odd that something this intricate would be all the way out here, seemingly in the middle of the woods. Surely someone wouldnโt forget to leave something like this behind.ย
Yoongi mutters under his breath and you think you catch the words, โdamn nuisances.โ
โDoes this mean something to you?โ
He shakes his head. โNo, but Iโm sure the department will have an idea,โ is all he says before taking off his backpack and unzipping it. โWeโll send it in as evidence and see what they can find.โย
โWait, at least let me get a picture of it first,โ you protest. Retrieving your phone, you snap a quick shot of it.ย ย
โHang on, we donโt even know if itโs related to the case. You canโt just share it on your blog, I mean, yourย article,โ he emphasizes with a pointed look much to your chagrin.ย
โIโm not going to say anything about it,โ is your quick reassurance. โBut I can at least do some research of my own.โ
Rifling through his backpack, he pulls out a purple bandana. Using the cloth, he picks up the strange artifact and places it inside a plastic bag. Itโs then that you manage to catch a glimpse of whatโs inside. โGoing camping later?โ You presume, noticing the extra pair of clothes.ย
โIโm not planning on it, those are just extra in case I need to crash somewhere else for the night,โ is his response, zipping the bag before standing upright.ย Heโs already walking while you stare at his back before following after him.
Curiosity has different common scenarios running through your mind, yet you canโt help but press further. โDonโt you live nearby?โ
โYeah, but sometimes I stay for a few days at a friendโs place.โย
As you continue walking, your eyes wander across the trees and ground, looking for any sign of something out of the ordinary. You see a set of pawprints, a wolfโs pawprints to be exact. Although it doesnโt seem like theyโre from your wolf unless he was running around here recently on four legs. Reaching for your phone, you snap some more pictures of the tracks.ย ย
โTaking more pictures for your blog, I guess,โ Yoongi wonders, hearing the shutter click as he looks back at you with a smirk. But the grin fades when he takes note of the prints though he doesnโt comment on them.ย
โYou know,โ you say, turning back to face him, โIโd sure love to see this supposed blog you think I have. At this point, even Iโm wondering if it actually exists.โ
โSo the research is for stories then,โ he presumes. โOr is it art?โ
โNeither.โย
He looks at you expectantly, waiting. โYou said once that the research is for fun. Which kind of fun?โ
Oh, if only he knew. โWerewolves and all sorts of supernatural creatures interest me. I like learning about them even if they might not be real. Gives me a better understanding of them, you know?โย
The sideways look he gives is indiscernible, an expression you canโt quite pinpoint. It almost seems like painful longing or desperation. Or youโre just misinterpreting things. โYes, actually I can understand.โย ย ย
When he doesnโt elaborate, you eventually ask, โSo then whatโs yours?โ
โMy what?โย
โYour interest, the thing you know or want to know everything about, even if itโs not for work or considered worth your time?โ
He blinks, incredulous. โAre you asking me what my hobbies are?โ
โYes. Though would you consider researching supernatural creatures a hobby?โ Under your circumstances, it almost feels like a case study of sorts. It makes you wonder how Wolfy would take it knowing that heโs been your main subject. Heโd probably flick his tail against your back like he tends to do.ย
โNot all hobbies have to be skills which you perfect over time, Y/N,โ Yoongi says, drawing you from your internal musings. โYou learning about fantasy creatures is still knowledge you gain.โย
โEven if I canโt apply it to โrealityโ?โ You snort, doing air quotes at the end.ย
He stops walking, staring at you directly. โIs that what you believe?โ He murmurs, his voice gentle.ย
โNo,โ is your immediate answer and you stumble over your words as you attempt to explain when he quirks a brow. โItโs more so just my parents would consider it a waste of time. Not that theyโd try discouraging me, they just wouldnโt understand the purpose or use of it. Theyโre very,โ you struggle to find the right word, โtechnical, analytical, take your pick.โย
โSo I assume theyโre not too fond of the arts then.โย
You wince, pursing your lips. โWell, no, they understand the concept of creativity and inspiration. Itโs just, they see things from a realistic perspective. Why spend all your time learning about creatures that donโt exist when you could be learning about actual wolves instead?โ
โRegardless of what they think, youโre doing something you enjoy. Even if it means sneaking around through a crime scene and interviewing traumatized victims,โ he jokes, and you lightly smack his arm in retaliation.ย ย
โYou make me sound like some suspect thatโs inserting themselves into the investigation.โ
He rubs the spot where you hit him, still smiling. โClearly youโre not because youโre terrible at it. Iโm kidding,โ he laughs when you playfully scowl at him. โYou just got unlucky by running into us.โ
โGot that right. Your friend sure is proficient with his words.โ
โNamjoon? Yeah, heโs been with the agency for a while and heโs an experienced communications liaison.โย
โHonestly,โ you mutter as he states what you already guessed. โHeโs certainly good at dodging questions like someone else I happen to know.โย
Your implication is met with him rolling his eyes as he shakes his head. โIโm not dodging questions. Going back to your earlier one,โ he shrugs, โI guess my hobby is cooking though I donโt always have time. Like right now for instance,โ he indicates to the sunlight thatโs slowly descending below the trees and itโs then that you notice how the sky is a glowing orange rather than the clear blue it once was. โWe should probably head back. Itโll be dark soon,โ he recommends.
โWell, if you ever need a taste tester I donโt mind volunteering,โ you offer, feeling your face immediately grow warm beneath his gaze, the faint amber of his eyes returning. โI mean, itโs the least I can do since you always try my various coffee flavors.โ
โIโll keep that in mind,โ Yoongi says with a fond smile.ย
Both of you begin heading back towards the main trail and it surprisingly doesnโt take long as youโre soon arriving at the parking lot. โWill you be out searching tomorrow too?โ
โNo, most of the evidence has already been logged. We just came out to do one last thorough check. And good thing too,โ he notes, nodding to you, โbecause we couldโve missed that statue. Thanks for the help.โ
You shrug. โAll in a dayโs work.โ Stepping across the uneven gravel, you make your way back towards your bike. โSo howโd all of you get here?โ You wonder, motioning to the empty space where not a single car is in sight.ย
โJimin and Namjoon took Joonโs scooter,โ he motions to where you just barely see a lilac colored moped parked near the tree line, โand I walked.โ
โWait, is that his personal vehicle? Because I like it and kind of want it now. And whyโre you always walking around everywhere?โ
โYeah, itโs his. Letโs just say a scooter is more his speed. And he really enjoys it, so good luck getting him to give it up. As for your other question, I just prefer walking compared to vehicles in general. Itโs just easier. Why does it matter?โ
โBecause thatโs a lot of walking to do, not to mention more time to get everywhere. I know this is a small town, but this area is still a ways out.โย
โThereโs a lot of different trails that I use for shortcuts.โย
โYou know what? Iโll take your word for it. See you tomorrow hopefully.โย
He nods. โYeah, Iโll probably stop by the coffee shop for a bit. Have a good night.โย
You tell him the same and he watches you get on your bike, standing in the middle of the lot while you ride away.ย
Like most days, the shop is bustling with people coming in and out for hot drinks and to warm up before going back out into the chilly weather. And true to his word, the next day Yoongi is there that afternoon wearing his hoodie as always.ย
โJust your usual black coffee?โ You ask, and he nods.ย
The bell chimes again. More groups of customers stepping inside while a few exit with their food and drinks.ย
โOkay, for here, right?โ You turn towards him, already holding the porcelain mug in your hands.ย
As he opens his mouth to respond, his eyes go wide, brown bleeding into a glowing scarlet and itโs like heโs looking through you at something else. His hands tense, sharp nails digging into the counter, creating jagged lines in the worn wood.ย
From behind him, you see two customers in line with one looking around the shop while the other raises an eyebrow but doesnโt say anything. You hadnโt paid them any mind, yet now you canโt help but notice the one watching Yoongi as the bulging muscles of his arms seem to flex with every move. How often does he work out?ย
โTo go, please.โ You barely hear Yoongi mumble, his voice low and practically unheard amidst the loud sounds of blenders and people talking. He releases a shaky breath as he hunches over and rests his palms on the counter.ย
โOkay. You alright?โ You ask, concerned by his odd demeanor.ย
Yoongiโs still for a minute as though processing your words. โYeah, fine.โ He takes a breath, inhaling deeply and the crimson soon fades away, melding into liquid caramel instead. He sniffles and wipes a finger across his nose.ย
โHey, I can help with the next one while you help him,โ Elanor mutters from behind, causing you to jump slightly.ย
Both you and Yoongi move to the side as Elanor takes over at the register.ย
โAre you sure everythingโs okay?โย
โYeah.โ His attempt to reassure you isnโt exactly convincing. โJust got a headache all of a sudden.โ
โI think I have some painkillers in my bag if you need some,โ you tell him, pouring his coffee into a recycled cup before handing it to him.ย
โNo, itโs okay. Iโll probably head home and take a nap. See you later,โ he says, quickly taking his drink and immediately leaving before you can so much as wave goodbye.ย
Later that night, you realize that Wolfy isnโt here today either. Strange. Maybe he has other things to do. As you continue down the path, you hear a low rumble in the distance. Your feet slow to a stop so you can listen more.ย
Straining your ears, it takes a minute before you hear a bark out in the distant forest. You head off the trail and begin going towards the general direction of the sound. Thereโs a good chance this isnโt Wolfy as heโs definitely not the only canine out here. But what if it is?ย
Without the light from the lampposts, seeing is difficult and you have to resort to using your phoneโs flashlight so you can watch your step. Intuition is smacking your curiosity within you, reminding you of what happened the last time you went exploring in the woods at night. Yeah, you were almost eaten alive but you were led astray by a will oโ the wisp. And you got to meet Wolfy as a result.ย
A cawing crow startles you and you nearly stumble into a tree as a result. Looking up, you raise your light high and find the blackbird staring down at you from a leafless branch. Wasnโt there a crow Halloween night too? It caws again before taking flight, swooping right over your head and you duck away.ย
By the time you look up, you see it heading back the direction you came. You think. Just to confirm, and actually be on the safe (smart) side, you check the GPS on your phone to ensure you know how to get back to civilization.ย
From not too far away, you hear a louder bark thatโs followed by a growl. Shutting your light off, you continue walking closer. Thereโs a break in the trees as the forest grows thinner and you hide behind a bush before cautiously peeking over the bramble.ย
In a small clearing are two men and one very pissed-off werewolf. What once was a grassy field now resembles a battlefield as destroyed trees are scattered across with trunks splintered and branches snapped. Both menโs clothes and hair are slightly disheveled, but otherwise they remain in one piece, and itโs then that you recognize the one with big muscles from the coffee shop earlier today. The werewolf, on the other hand, has a few thin open wounds across its arms and upper torso. All the noises youโve been hearing mustโve been from their fighting. A brawl youโve just idiotically walked in on.
Another growl sounds from the lupine that reverberates the ground beneath you. Though the moonlight doesnโt help much, you can tell itโs not Wolfy, the body being more lithe and fur being a lighter shade than his. Its lips peel back, showcasing sharp fangs as it snaps its jaws in warning. The taunt has the two men adjusting their stances, leaning down into crouches as they prepare to lunge while you can only watch in muted horror, unsure of what to do.ย
You flinch in anticipation, preparing for the brutal fight to restart, until a loud cawing sounds from behind. Slowly looking over your shoulder, you see the black bird sitting nonchalantly in the branches of the tree, quizzically staring back at you. It cries again and you wave your arm in a pathetic attempt to try and silence it.ย
Instead, it does a nosedive, buzzing you in the process and lets out another caw. You hiss for it to pipe down, but it simply squawks in return. Nearly getting a face full of feathers, you duck low but trip into the bush, the branches breaking your fall with a loud cascading crunch as you fall forward and hit the ground.ย
Lifting your head, you ease up and see the men and werewolf staring directly at you. Crap. You fumble with the half-dented bush and get to your feet. None of them have moved, but even if you run now, youโre not sure that itโll make much difference. Maybe you could lose the guys, but not a freaking werewolf.ย
When the one guy youโve never seen before takes a step towards you, the wolf growls before lunging at him. The coffee shop guy actually tackles the werewolf, forcing it to the ground. Both begin fighting, the guy avoiding a near bite to the arm as they both try getting to their feet and gaining the upper hand. While theyโre duking it out, the first guy shoots forward, suddenly appearing directly in front of you.
How the hell did he move so fast? Dread pools within your stomach upon realizing that theyโre not human either.
โDonโt worry, everythingโs fine,โ the man murmurs softly, his eyes flaring bright ruby red before he utters a word you canโt understand.
Your body stills, rushing thoughts going quiet as your fear evaporates. Itโs not that you feel calm, justโฆquiet. Like your emotions have been sedated with a dose of tranquility. Whatโs wrong with you? You try forcing yourself to move, but even internally you feel lethargic, and your limbs wonโt cooperate.ย
โRelax and listen to my words,โ the man says, his command instantly filling you with ease. โYou will forget us and what you saw here. Youโre going to turn around and go home once Iโโ
Before he can finish, heโs slammed by something dark and massive, causing you to break free from whatever spell or magic he cast as you fall to your knees. You see the large werewolf loom above the man, keeping itself in between you two. It growls in warning while the guy merely stares up at it in return, shifting his weight as he adjusts his stance.
A blurred figure appears from the trees before a third werewolf joins everyone. Sparing a quick glance at the wolf next to you, it heads towards the other one still engaged with coffee shop guy before joining in on the fight.
Since theyโre all preoccupied, you finally take the opportunity to run back into the woods. Your feet dash across the forest floor, shoving tree limbs and shrubs aside as you head in what you hope is the right direction of the main trail. Flapping bird wings sound from above and you look up to find the same crow flying in the air. It lets out another caw, gliding in between the trees as it stares down at you.
For all you know it could be leading you to more trouble, yet you donโt have time to think about it before something eventually tries coming after you. So you follow after the bird and thankfully soon notice the shining lamps from the path. Pushing yourself faster, you race towards the lightened area and emerge from the forest only to crash straight into someone.
The person grunts from the impact but manages to keep from falling over completely as they stumble back a few steps. โWhat the hell? Y/N?โ They ask, and you immediately recognize the voice. You pull away and find Yoongi standing before you, straightening his shirt to get rid of the rumpled creases where your face once was a second ago.ย
โYoongi? Whatโre you doing out here?โ You ask, glancing over your shoulder into the dark wilderness but find nothing chasing after you. Maybe those guys and the werewolves will keep each other distracted until you both can get far enough away.ย
That hopeful thought is struck down as a loud howl pierces the night sky. Your eyes widen as you look to Yoongi, wracking your brain for an excuse or casual response only for him to beat you to it. โWe should get out of here,โ he suggests, and you agree, not even hesitating to trek down the path with him, intent on going straight home.ย
โMaybe you should head home too. I can manage the rest of the way,โ you say, but he shakes his head, keeping his hand against the small of your back.ย
โJust walk, Y/N,โ he tells you, his voice tight.ย
The two of you walk in silence, only your quickened footsteps sounding against the dirt as you stay within the dim glow of the guiding path lights. You resist the urge to look back, afraid of seeing what could be lurking in the shadows while Yoongiโs eyes flicker in every direction, checking either side of the forest for anything drawing near. A snapping branch can be heard from the right and Yoongi immediately slows his pace, keeping his position standing just in front of you.ย
Another twig snaps from behind and you both whirl to find a guy standing on the trail, another one you havenโt met before. The bangs of his brown hair hang just above his eyes and overall he seems like an ordinary guy, down to the band t-shirt, skinny jeans, and converse. โOh sorry,โ he apologizes, giving a bashful smile as he rubs the side of his arm, โdidnโt mean to startle you. Just out enjoying the view. Nice night for a walk, isnโt it?โย
โYeah, it is,โ Yoongi answers, his words clipped. โEnjoy your walk.โ He silently urges you towards the way home and you begin taking a few steps in that direction, afraid of turning your back on the guy.ย
โHey, you wouldnโt happen to know where QualiTea Treats & Trees is, would you? Iโm supposed to meet my friend near there later,โ he suddenly asks, rubbing the back of his neck.ย
Your mouth nearly opens to automatically answer, but you stop yourself short, afraid of giving this stranger the location of Jin and Hobiโs tearoom.ย
โItโs in the town square, you canโt miss it. So why donโt you and your friend go run along,โ Yoongi suggests, turning to face the patch of trees to the left.ย
When you follow his gaze, you think you catch a silhouette hidden amongst the shadows, but itโs hard to tell exactly where. A shiver wracks your spine. The guy also looks in the same direction before sighing and jerking his head to side. From the woods, out walks another guy with striking blue hair thatโs partially tied in the back. Dots of freckles form along his cheeks, and with the colorful hair, it gives him an air of etherealness. Even you canโt help but become enchanted. He goes to stand by his friend, both relaxed while you and Yoongi are anything but.ย
Your eyes meet blue hairโs and you watch as they faintly begin glowing red, muting whatever thoughts you once had. โDonโt look into their eyes,โ you vaguely register Yoongi mutter beside you and you immediately look away, keeping your focus on the ground. You think you hear blue hair guy let out an exasperated sigh.ย
Multiple growls accompanied by short, rapid barks sound off somewhere nearby in the woods. Theyโre slowly coming closer.ย
โSomeone should get those wolves on a leash, they sure are noisy tonight,โ the first guy comments while blue hair snorts, barely hiding his smile.
โTake it up with the locals,โ Yoongi says.ย
โWhy? Surely someone with your credentials can easily take care of it.โย
Beside you Yoongi tenses, but doesnโt say anything, instead glaring hard at the mystery men. While youโre beyond confused by what he means, you try diffusing the situation before things escalate here too. โLook we donโt want any trouble,โ you start, grabbing a hold of Yoongiโs arm, tugging it lightly. His hard gaze doesnโt break from the guyโs, but he allows himself to be pulled back.ย
The first guy clears his throat. โI know, we donโt either. So if your friend could come with us, we can get this all sorted out.โย
โWeโre not going with you.โ
โOh, noย sheย doesnโt.ย Youย do though. I mean we donโt want to cause a scene, right?โย
โIโm not leaving her alone.โ
The guy motions to blue hair next to him. โFelix can make sure she gets to where she needs to be. Wonโt you feel better knowing sheโll be away from all the commotion?โ
Yoongi flexes his fingers, taking a breath to steady himself. โAs if Iโd take your word for it. Just let us go and weโll forget this ever happened.โย
โSorry, but we canโt let you do that, man.โย
โI wasnโt asking.โย
Felix whispers something to the other guy who thinks for a second before nodding. โSo howโd you earn her trust? Did you just become friends by chance or you two know each other through school or work?โ He asks.
โThatโs none of your business.โย
โHowโd she take the news?โ The guy smiles. โOr having you been sharing trademark secrets?โ
โNeither. Sheโs smart.โย
Such a strange line of questioning, one where youโre seemingly the only one completely lost in the conversation. โWhat does he mean?โ You quietly ask yet the other two can somehow hear.ย
The guy with dark hair raises a brow in surprise. โOh, she doesnโt know. Are you ashamed or afraid sheโll run away screaming?โ
โIt doesnโt matter. I havenโt broken any rules,โ Yoongi calmly responds though a slight tremor begins coursing through his body every few seconds.ย
โMaybe or maybe not. Either way, you or one of your friends certainly have.โ
โWe havenโt done anything wrong,โ you insist, despite not knowing everything. It doesnโt matter so long as you two can get away from whoever these people are.
โIโm sure thatโs exactly what he wants you to think. Donโt you wonder why heโs always in or around the woods all the time?โ He catches the surprise register across your face, his mouth turning up in a small smile. โSo you have. Has he been agitated or more stressed by any chance lately?โ
โThatโs enough,โ Yoongi quietly orders.ย
โI agree. Now if youโll just come with us, weโll make sure she gets home safe. Clearly, sheโll be better protected with us than you.โย
Yoongi leans closer to you so he can whisper in your ear. โRun,โ he urges, โIโll make sure they donโt follow after you.โย
Before you can answer, he strides towards them and itโs as if theyโre expecting it because the first guy suddenly throws a punch which is blocked by Yoongi. The two begin fighting and dodging each otherโs moves, almost like a dance in which neither is led by unfiltered anger. Instead, theyโre poised, focused on feinting away before either can land a hit. And then their speed increases, moving faster and faster until your eyes can barely keep up.ย
Felix, whoโs been watching like you up to this point, then springs into action and immediately lands a harsh kick on Yoongi that causes him to stumble though he doesnโt fall. His movements are graceful yet dangerous as he joins in, more hits and kicks successfully knocking into Yoongi.ย
And youโre just standing there. Using your pepper spray wonโt work in this case, not when you could potentially hurt Yoongi. Even if you tried getting in the middle, youโll end up getting hit or miss your target because all three of them are moving so fast that theyโre almost beginning to blur.ย
From the forest, a loud hiss sounds from the undergrowth that draws your attention away. The air around you seems to pick up, forcing the thinner trees to bend in submission as another strange, unearthly, noise comes from close by.ย
โYoongi,โ you murmur, knowing your voice is lost to the wind as he continues fighting with the other men. The rustling in the trees grows louder, shuddering the branches as something makes its way closer in this direction, moving fast. Inhumanely fast. โYoongi.โ The hair all across your body is standing upright as dread fills you, natural instincts sensing an impending doom.ย
Thereโs a flash of white before something launches itself at you and you barely have time to react as you duck aside. Only youโre not quick enough as the thing hits you hard, knocking you to the rough ground. โYoongi!โ You scream, looking up in terror at the humanoid figure with sharp fangs and bottomless black eyes. Itโs completely bare and hairless with patches of silver scales forming all across its skin. The figure screeches and you flinch, raising your arm to protect your face when thereโs a stinging gash cutting into your flesh.ย
Even though it doesnโt cut deep, it still burns like hell and you cry out, both in pain and absolute horror when the creature leans in for a bite, saliva dripping from its mouth. Managing a solid punch, you turn and see that Yoongi and the other men have stopped fighting, shock etched across their faces.ย
But what catches you off guard is the glowing crimson thatโs coming from Yoongiโs eyes. Fury engulfs whatever surprise is left and in the next instant he roars, his body contorting before thereโs suddenly a brown wolf standing on hind legs, one youโve become rather familiar with recently.ย
โWolfy,โ you breathe, the nickname lost in the sound of chaos.ย
The werewolf launches himself at you, tackling the creature with ease and the uplifted weight leaves you feeling exposed, vulnerable. Scrambling backwards, you kick at the ground, your legs feeling like lead but you keep going until you find yourself backed into the trunk of another tree once more. Yet thereโs not much to see, only blurs of brown and white can be distinguished as bodies wrestle with each other.ย
Deep growls and shrilling shrieks fill the air, blood spraying every so often. The two strange guys watch, with Felix stepping closer, seemingly looking for an opportunity to jump into the fight. That is, until another figure suddenly appears beside them. As he tells them something, more and more guys keep appearing, showing up in an instant.ย
Your head feels like itโs about to overload just as yet another figure materializes next to the others and then they move in a blur before instantly kneeling beside you. Chan, the guy from the library, carefully grips your face within his chilled hands and forces you to meet his scarlet eyes. โIโm sorry. Sleep,โ he commands, the word instantly forcing darkness to consume you as you fall in an unconscious heap.ย

โWill she be there?โ His closest friend asks as Taehyung buttons his dress shirt. The quarterly gala for the local packs was tonight, it was Taehyung's first one as lead alpha. He shrugs in response to Jiminโs question, trying to appear unaffected but his face gives him away.ย
He always wore his heart on his sleeve, unable to hide it if he wanted to, no matter the circumstance. The quality never affected him before, until he met and was rejected by you, now it was a part of himself he hated. Actually, since the encounter, slowly he was beginning to hate more and more of himself, because this was the body, the man, you rejected. He could feel himself apologise to his wolf a thousand times over, for not being enough for their mate.
โIsnโt that what you want?โ you had said to him that night. โThe freedom to choose?โ
He looks over to his best friend, his platonic soulmate since birth, who shared the same values as you did. โโJimin had voiced his disagreement with the moonโs bonding more than once, to the point that the elders of their packs grew weary of the other alpha. The Moonโs choice was absolute, they had no qualms accepting the matter. But Jimin was young when he fell in love with someone who wasnโt his mate, the issues he had with the laws were deep and traumaticโฆ which is why Taehyung was so afraid that you had met someone else before him.
โShe reminds me of you,โ Taehyung says out of the blue, after his train of thoughts the sentence makes sense to him, but to Jimin itโs another one of his random outbursts. He frowns at the rejected alpha but does not question his words.
โI know you said you would do the same Jimin,โ Taehyung says solemnly. โBut I just want you to know, for your mate the rejection feels like youโre being shredded apart, like gravity disappears and your soul tries so hard to latch onto something solid it grabs onto everything but tears itself into pieces in desperation for anything to hold onto. I donโt feel here, I just feel lost.โ
Thereโs silence between them as the words hang in the air until Taehyung elaborates further, the blank despondent look on his face makes Jimin feel for this friend.
โEven if I were to hunt all the parts of myself down, I would never find them all, Iโll never be whole again.โ
They say nothing as he turns away, both of them ignoring the tear that slipped out of the alphaโs eyes.ย
โ
He tried to swallow down the bitter feeling as he walked through the grand entrance of the estate, the neighbouring packs were hosting this gala, and every eye was turned to the rejected alpha, and behind each gaze was an agenda. It was no secret Taehyung was the most eligible bachelor amongst the packs, and now word had spread that he was mated to the deranged Luna, the opportunity presented itself in their eyes to forgo the Moonโs wishes.ย
The hypocrisy of these wolves, Jimin thought beside his friend, only obeying the Moonโs wishes when it suits them.
The amount of well wishers that visited him since the day of his rejection were beyond that of sympathy. The business between mates was a private matter, the disrespect towards the bond was thinly veiled as every wolf that arrived brought their daughter or daughters as if to say โtake your pickโ, as if numbers would play into their favour. Jimin had to hand it to Tae for not losing his cool, although at times it seemed he was close to. Instead of taking it out on the suitors and severing valuable ties, he visited Jiminโs pack and vented to the shorter alpha.
He watched now as Taehyung subtly searched around the room with a desperate hope in his eyes, evident to those who knew him, like Jimin did, he was looking for you. Even Jimin scoured their surroundings, but he noticed, you were nowhere to be seen.
โShe's not here,โ Taehyung absentmindedly breathes as his gaze searches on.
โMaybe she decided against coming,โ Jimin suggests but the alpha shakes his head, rejecting the idea.
โI heard that her pack werenโt taking the news too well,โ Taehyung sighs in worry for you. โIโve heard rumours about how they treat her.โ
His wolf wants to whine, wants it to rumble out of his chest to call for you.
โCavemen,โ Jimin rebuffs with a scowl. โYouโre talking about this very casually,โ he notes as he looks up and down at his friend, admiring the fact that despite the rejection he was still behaving as the gentleman he knew. He looks Jimin in the eye with a pressure of intensity behind the gaze that, despite all their years together, he can't decipher.
โI donโt hate her,โ he confesses. โI just hurt.โ
โ
He's here, you feel your wolf stir in the confines of your chest, like the light of your soul started burning again, rousing it from a cold barren sleep.
You bore the whispers and looks of distaste sent your way, took them with your held head high but you wanted a breather, a break from the onslaught of their disapproval. Mates were rejected, it was a rare possibility but it happened, so why were you alienated for it? The passage you walk down is empty, and youโre thankful.
The wolf inside of you grew more and more restless as you begged her to return to her slumber, even if it made you feel empty again, but pleading with her was fruitless when what she wanted was so close yet not within reach. You could feel your being summersault inside your chest repeatedly while you searched for a place of calm, away from judging eyes and the presence that was making your muscles atrophy the more you moved further away.ย
As you stumbled in your heels, in the unfamiliar estate, the corridors grew darker, but you welcomed it when the distance meant you could no longer hear their taunts and whispers. The air was still, quieter, you were left to your thoughts, only having to fight the voice that begged you to find him. You didnโt give in, instead you walked to the hollow arched window in front of you, a sense of deja vu washing over you.ย
Light flooded through, sent from the crescent moon illuminating the night sky with a tint of blue. She looked like she was losing herself, like someone had taken a huge chunk out of her being but she still radiated light better than any star. You could deny it all you wanted, but with your gaze on the moon you knew why you were hated for your decision. You were torturing your wolf, and his, the purest parts of yourselves, your souls. It was unforgivable. You knew that, but you had done unforgivable things before and lived to tell the tale.ย
โI donโt deserve him,โ you whispered to the whining wolf inside of you as if it would placate her, closing your eyes as you stubbornly stood by the statement.ย
โDeserve who?โ
You turn to the alpha that crept up on your hiding place, heart pounding from the shock. How did he sneak up on you like that? You inhale through your nose deeply, meeting his amused grin with a confused one of your own. He smelled like- your alpha. Wafts of his scent stuck closely to this stranger. You shake away the thoughts as fast as they come, you didnโt need to wonder about Taehyung, he wasn't yours.ย
You eye the newcomer carefully, not wanting to trust him just because he brought a familiar scent with his foreign one.
โItโs rude to sneak up on someone,โ you chastise him bluntly.ย
โDeserve Taehyung?โ he ignores you, continuing his question, although seemingly talking more to himself than you. His hands are in his pockets as he walks closer to you, not helping the fact he already put you on edge. โWell if youโre anything like me like he seems to think, you probably donโt.โ
He lets out a humourless breath of laughter, again more so at himself.ย
โLook, I donโt know who you are but itโs really none of your business.โ
He looks at you then, meeting your steady gaze with a burdened one of his own. His eyes were aged beyond his years, not in wisdom but in scars. He doesnโt seem surprised to see similar ones in yours, different shapes, different stories, but they weighed the same as his.ย ย
โIโm not here to convince you to give my best friend a chance,โ he scoffs, those heavy eyes never leaving you. โThat would make me a hypocrite.โ
You stay quiet, cautiously watching his movements, trying to figure him out, trying not to indulge in that stupid faint smell that lingered on him.
โThe Moon knows the day I meet my mate I will cut the cord,โ he mutters. โAfter seeing the number it's done on Tae, for their sake I hope we never meet.โ
He stands beside you, hands still in his pockets, looking out at the moon the way you were but with such distaste you could feel the hate radiate off him.ย
โNot that I care anyway,โ he admits with a hollow smile. โWhoever they are, I already despise themโฆโ
โI donโt hate Taehyung,โ you recoil from the alpha, brows furrowing again at the unsettling feeling his words evoked. โI donโt know him, how can I hate him?โ
โHow can you be expected to love him?โ he scoffs again bitterly, meaning every word. โHow can he expect it?โ
His statement ran true, echoed everything you had been saying but his tone of voice made you dislike him instantlyโฆ Was this how people reacted to you when you preached the same philosophy? But you never said it with such hate to the individual, to your mate, only the ideals.ย
โIt's not his fault,โ you mumble to your unwanted mateโs defence. โWe grew up with these beliefs instilled in us, and they're not all wrongโฆโ
His eyes snap to your form then in surprise or disgust, you donโt know, ready to argue with you.
โWhatโs wrong is the expectation to follow them without thought, without choice,โ you explained, not letting him interrupt. โWhy should the Moon decide whom I belong with? Why canโt that be my choice?โ
He doesnโt speak but you hear him swallow down whatever it was he wanted to say. The silence is stifling, you donโt want to stand in it for much longer.
โExcuse me,โ you make your leave, going back the way you came and leaving the alpha to ponder to himself in your absence.ย
Your wolf settles, sitting calmly inside your soul without complaint, as if for once she agreed with your decision, lulling you into a false sense of security. You should have realised she was leading you to a trap.
You catch yourself before you stumble into the figure as you walk through a doorway, the both of you caught in shock on either side of the arch between you.
โTaehyung,โ you breathe, caught in his gaze, your wolf inside of you leaping towards him but you hold her back, imprisoning her behind the bones of your ribcage.ย
His hands are balled into fists beside him, tightening when you called his name, did you realise you were drawing him in? Those eyes staring at him so wide he could see inside your soul, he swore he could hear your wolf whining for him. He was fighting every fibre of his being by not taking the steps he wanted to close the distance. The weight in his chest as it pulled was making him lose his breath, the absence of you since that night made his wolf desperate.
Mate, Luna, Love, could you hear his wolf call out for you in the confines of his soul the way he could hear yours? Trapped in your respective human body unable to reach each other. The thought has Taehyung souring, you can see it on his face as he looks away, he wanted to tell his wolf there was no point in pining, no hope, not when you rejected the bond.
โAre you okay?โ You ask, a light whisper despite the heavy guilt burdening your body.
How do you manage to simultaneously break his heart and mend it back together? He was caught in a paradox in your company, empty and full, cold and warm, his body was unsettled as his soul spiralled within it. He manages to nod but itโs a lie, it takes him longer to find his voice, a light awkward atmosphere lingering between you, and yet the silence was so loud.ย
โI was looking for my friend Jimin,โ he explains, avoiding an actual answer to your question, trying to smile, trying to behave like he was fine, not for prideโs sake but because he was afraid. You already saw him at his most vulnerable, he openly bared his soul and it got him hurt, he didnโt want to do it again. He wouldnโt be able to bear it a second time.ย
He should walk away, he should leave you just as you wanted him to, but he glances over your sunken form. The way your shoulders that were held so high the last time he saw you were slumped and defeated has him speaking before he can stop himself.
โAre you okay?โ he repeats your words softly, feeling your pain mirroring inside of him. As hurt as he was, he didnโt want you to be. You were the cause of all his heartache, but he still wouldnโt wish you any sadness.ย
He can see the surprise in your features at his question for your wellbeing. He knew of the way you were treated in your pack, he wanted to tell you how strong he thought you were for being so resilient against them, for standing up for your beliefs, but he didnโt know how it would sound coming from him.ย
He can see your eyes glisten in the fire from the torches on the wall, the way it illuminated you to him despite the distance. He itched to stand closer to you, take you in his arms, hold you for a moment. You both needed it, that much was clear, but he would have to wait for you to take the first step. All he could do was extend out his hand and wait.ย
You glance down at his open palm before looking back up at him questioningly.
โLetโs go somewhere,โ despite his earlier conviction he wasnโt going to make himself vulnerable again to your rejection, the look in your eyes compels him to. His wolf inside of him takes over, even if he was putting himself in the firing line, it was instinct to protect you, to make sure you were okay. You could stampede across his chest, and he would let you if it was what you needed.ย
โIโm no good for you Taehyung,โ you whisper, and the way you said his name gripped his heart in a way that made him realise where he lost it, why he was feeling like his chest was so empty in the first place. He left it with you that night, and a part of him didnโt want it back.
Who says? He wanted to challenge but he doesnโt, you didnโt need that right now.
โIโm not trying to convince you of reconsidering,โ he says, not needing to elaborate on what, โbut I donโt want to be here, and I suspect, neither do you.โ
He reaches out to you, and you donโt know what compels you to do so, but you take his hand.

Being the next in line to lead the pack was a very stressful job for Hongjoong. Although he had looked forward to becoming the Alpha for a long time, hoping to change and reform some laws in their system so life would be better, he found his efforts often thwarted by his dad's and the council's old fashioned ideas. What was the point in being trained to lead a pack when everyone shut him out and never gave him a chance to speak?
More often than not, he found himself running off deep into the forest, even trailing through the more dangerous and forbidden areas just to feel as if he was free for a few hours, without anyone telling him he was wrong. During one of these trails, he felt off. His sense of alert was heightened while his wolf was feeling rather unsettled. Closing his eyes, he perked his ears as he heard and felt someone coming his way. His wolf of course got in attack mode, knowing a lot of rogues wandered around there. Hearing a branch snap nearby, he shifted immediately and lunged at the person behind, none other than you. He took you down quite easily since you were significantly smaller and weaker than him, your body landing harshly on the ground without putting up much resistance. His snarling soon stopped when you lifted your face and you saw each other for the first time. While you were still terrified of the beast trapping you down, your wolf was going giddy at finally finding your mate.
"If you're going to get rid of me, just get it over with. I won't fight you even if I had the strength to." You spoke up in a weak voice.
Hongjoong whined lowly when he heard your frail and delicate voice, feeling pain at the state you were in.
"I think it's more than clear to me and you that even if I'm supposed to, I'll never be able to follow through on that."
Getting off you, he transformed back into human form, offering you his hand and helping you up. You were so weak you nearly fell to the ground again had Hongjoong not held you up in his arms. You were severely malnourished and pale, barely weighing anything to him as he held you up.
"You're a rogue aren't you?"
Of course you were. Life as a rogue was tough and barely survivable in those parts of the country.
"Yes..." You breathed out, and even that was a struggle.
"What's your name?" Hongjoong brushed some hairs out of your dirt covered face.
"Y/N." Through much effort, you managed to answer him.
"Y/N." He repeated, his heart leaping when he heard your name.
You could only nod your head before your body started to give out, collapsing from exhaustion. Picking you up bridal style, Hongjoong ran as fast as he could back to the safe side of the woods, hoping to find some food and water for you. He had to. Even though he himself was tired, his wolf urged and pushed him to hurry.
"We just found our mate and we're not about to lose her."
Being a member of one of the richest and powerful families in the land, Seonghwa grew up with life handed to him on a gold platter. His family and others around doted on him. He never wanted for anything. He had the world practically at his disposal.
Very different from you. First off, you weren't even a wolf. You were human and from a young age you learned what it was like to live in fear of the beasts that surrounded you. You watched as they destroyed your once peaceful village, killing off all your loved ones, and dragging some of you off to be forced into a life of servitude to them. And you couldn't do anything but submit. You had to learn to grow up quick as your childhood and family was stripped away, burnt to the ground like the quaint town you once called home.
And above all, you learnt to hate them. You hated the wolves with every fiber of your being. And it was your hatred for them that often got you into trouble. That's why you never lasted long serving one household for long before you were sold off to another one, only for the cycle to repeat itself over and over again. Til eventually, you ended up at the mansion the Parks owned, a very grand and extensive estate that other human servants wouldn't think twice about working in, the other girls often gushing about how it was ten times better working there than any other place.
"We're still servants and they're still wolves. In the end of the day, if you piss them off enough they won't hesitate to rip your throat out or hunt you for sport. Don't get comfortable just yet ladies." You responded one day when they asked you if you liked working there, bringing them back to the reality of the harsh prejudice against humans, whom wolves looked down on them for being weak and inferior.
"Y/N, I need you to take this upstairs to the young master."
You didn't want to but had to nonetheless. You had never met any of the family members and you weren't particularly looking forward to it. Knocking on the door, you waited until you were given permission to enter before coming in. You walked up to the handsome young male, his suit in hand held out in perfect order to him. He had a stunned look on his face, his orbs growing dark as he stared at you intensely. Living long enough to understand wolves, you knew exactly what was going on, and although you felt a tugging in your chest, you were not happy with the situation.
"Your suit for the ball my Lord."
With a straight face, you set it down on the bed before curtsying to him, indicating you were leaving. Before you could turn around, Seonghwa was gripping your arm, the instant he touched you, sparks were felt in both your bodies.
"You feel it too don't you? You understand what this means?" Hearing the calm, serene and excited tone in his voice sickened you. Without thinking twice, you pulled your hand away, the harshness of it making Seonghwa's wolf whine sadly.
"Don't get ahead of yourself. I hate you and your kind."
Seonghwa stood there stunned as you walked out without another word, his wolf yelping out in pain at your rejection.
"Our mate.........hates us?"

Wolves by default did not trust sorcerers due to their scheming and mischievous natures, and sorcerers preferred not to meddle or make business with wolves due to their volatile and emotionally driven temperaments. They were two completely different beings, polar opposites as ones often preferred letting instinct and emotions guide them while the others prided themselves in being rational and intellectual beings that knew how to separate their feelings when making decisions, thus making them some of the wisest people to roam the earth.
But their differences had to be put aside in this instance if they wanted a strong business and political relationship that would benefit both sides. As one of the ambassadors of the monarchy, Yunho was one of the men dispatched to negotiate matters with the Sorcerer King. He clutched the blanket tighter around his body as the carriage drove on, unable to stand the blistering cold weather of the snow filled kingdom. As he looked out the window, he felt his heart skip a beat briefly when he caught sight of someone walking along the road, barely seeing their face as it was covered by a thick cloak. He tried to brush it off, but something was telling him that he should have stopped the carriage and gone over to see them. But he had more pressing matters to attend to.
"Welcome to my humble home gentlemen. I hope you all enjoy your stay with us. Rest assure all your needs will be cared for." The old King welcomed them with a warmth that contrasted the chilly and icy atmosphere around them.
Gesturing for some people behind him to step up, he briefly introduced them as his family. His wife, and kids, which were several of them, welcomed them all, some more reserved than others, but overall there was no animosity.
"There's another one, my oldest daughter but she seems nowhere to be found-"
Right at that moment, the doors opened and in came a figure covered in snow. Yunho recognized the pale blue coat from before and the once undistinguished feeling finally became clear when you pulled the hood off and let your face be shown, the visitors letting out audible gasps of shock and astonishment at the beauty you possessed. You barely spared a glance at them though, looking through them to the man on the throne who was looking displeased.
"My apologies gentlemen. You'll have to forgive me daughter. It seems she got caught up in a little storm."
You showed absolute no expression as you bowed your head to them, briefly walking past them as you tried to keep your head down. However, feeling someone stare at you, you lifted your face up briefly to find Yunho staring at you with such tenderness that both confused and warmed you a little. But you continued walking to take your place next to your siblings as Yunho still had the lovestruck expression plastered on.
"She's our mate! But she's a sorceress! How? Is this possible!" His wolf wouldn't contain himself, going berserk at this revelation.
"Who cares if it's possible or not? Look at her and tell me even if she wasn't destined for us that you wouldn't fall for her." Yunho counteracted, his wolf impressed by his response.
"I can't disagree with that."

Finishing putting on his suit, Yeosang grabbed his crossbow and checked it to make sure that it was in perfect condition. Satisfied, he picked up more arrows before coming out of his tent to join the other warriors who were preparing to go scouting the area. Their unit commander came up and looked them all dead in the eye.
"Remember, try not to engage in one on one combat with the enemy. Leave that to that strength force. Your job is to hide in the shadows and take them out without being seen. Only shift into wolf form if there is no alternative. Save your energy as much as you can. Am I clear?"
"Yes sir!" A chorus of soldiers chimed out before dispersing themselves quietly at different directions into the deep forest, disappearing without a trace and hiding until the opposing army started marching out towards them.
Making sure to mask his scent with dirt, mud and even some of the rainwater that had fallen earlier, Yeosang quickly climbed on top of a tall and thick tree, using the branches to cover his body away from any prying eyes. Now he just had to wait, wait until they started coming out so he could take them out one by one as he stayed hidden in the shadows. This was the most nerve wrecking moment for him, sitting quietly, all alone as he awaited for something to happen.
Soon enough, he heard loud clamors coming from the side. Sneakily looking out, he saw a dozen of wolves launching at each other, some of which he recognized as his fellow mates, the others were the opposing side. Being swift as he was, he aimed the crossbow at each of the enemies, helping to take kill them all off. The rest of his surviving members signaled they were going to search the area for survivors, meaning Yeosang now had to move to another area to help out. Just as he was coming down, you sharply grabbed onto his ankle, throwing him to the ground and dragging him away. He kicked you in your snout and gained enough time to get up and reach for his crossbow. Just as he was about to shoot you, who was also going to lunge at him, you both halted when you felt the inevitable connection between them. Both of you had a horrified expression.
"Yeosang! We heard a struggle! Do you need help?"
Hearing one of his friends coming, Yeosang looked back at you. He knew he had to say something or shoot you down, but he couldn't. Reluctantly, he put his bow down.
"No! I'm fine! Just go on, the other guys might need help."
He let out a sigh of relief when he heard them retreat back to where they came from. Just as soon as he let his guard down, he looked back to find you shifted into human form, tackling him to the ground as you pressed a knife to his neck.
"You killed my pack! You dirty son of a bitch! I'm going to-"
You couldn't finish your sentence as your wolf growled at you for putting your hands on your mate, strongly telling you to put the knife down and get off him. Yeosang could feel the conflict in you, he himself was going through the same thing.
"Go ahead. Do it. Kill me now. I won't stop you... I can't stop you." He urged you, knowing fully well you weren't going to.
You cried in frustration and agony at realizing you couldn't do it and at knowing you hurt your mate. Throwing the knife to the ground, you shifted back to wolf form and started running as far away as possible. You didn't get far enough as Yeosang himself shifted and tackled you down, firmly pressing you to the ground to keep you from moving.
"You're not going anywhere."

Your friend was practically beaming with joy at the thought of finally meeting the man her parents had betrothed her to. She had been dreaming about this moment her entire life, planned it out to a T.
"I just know the moment we see each other, we'll fall in love." She sighed blissfully as she arranged her dress one more time.
"I wouldn't get too excited Bona. You know wolf bonds are something else." You kindly tried to remind her.
She simply ignored you as she often did to anyone who tried to tell her differently from what she believed.
"My parents had an arranged marriage and they learnt to love each other. They're very happy together. " She said so confidently.
"Yes, after they were forced to create the mate bond against their wishes and amidst the pressure, therefore breaking the link with whomever their real mate was supposed to be." Your wolf was internally rolling her eyes at the stupidity of her statement, unable to stand the thought of two individuals being forced together without a hint of love between them.
She wasn't the only one who thought so, as the young man forced to attend the event held for him and his betrothed was fuming in his seat, refusing to get out, arms tightly crossed over his chest.
"You can't make me." He sternly affirmed, his wolf also refusing to budge.
"San stop the nonsense and come out of there." His father spoke up.
Eventually he was forced out of the vehicle and practically dragged through the garden to go meet his fiancee and her parents, who were extremely excited and overly happy to finally meet him, having heard so many things about him. His wolf cringed and gagged at the young girl's shrilly and high pitched voice that squealed intensely when he took her hand and shook it, feeling absolutely no sparks at the touch nor when he looked at her eyes.
"Can't say we didn't feel anything bud. I definitely felt like throwing up that deer we ate earlier." His wolf shuddered.
"Oh God, I thought that was just me." San chuckled.
As they showed them around the gardens, San opted for staying behind the entourage, trying hard to avoid the girl that was trying to latch herself onto her arm less his wolf took over and lashed out in anger at her. He definitely didn't want to cause a scene. As they were walking through the front of the building, one of the butlers was on the second floor of the house, arranging the flower pots that served as decorations. Accidentally knocking one over, San watched in horror as you were coming out of the front door at the moment, not having a clue about the falling object. In a flash, he ran over to you, being a fast runner it was no problem as he held you back and pressed you back into wall. You didn't need to ask why a stranger suddenly manhandled you as the flower pot soon splattered on the floor, no doubt it would have broken your head had it landed on it.
"Are you o....kay?" San let out a soft gasp when he looked at you.
There it was. He finally felt it. The spark and instant attraction he'd often heard other wolves talk about. There was absolutely no denying it. You yourself couldn't keep yourself from smiling, both you and your wolf melting at your mate's beautiful smile.
"Oh... I'm more than ok."

"Where you heading off to Mingi?" His friend Yunho casually asked, noticing how he was packing up some stuff in his backpack, including a water bottle and a few fruits and snacks.
"Off into the woods. It's been a while since I went on a hike." He answered.
"Don't go off to far though. You know there's been a lot of rogue sightings and I heard they're pretty vicious." Yunho warned him.
"Pfft. Rogues don't scare me. I'll be fine. It's them who should watch out if they decide to cross me."
Yunho could only snicker at that. Mingi wasn't wrong. Although he was a pretty chill and laid back person, no one dared to anger him because the beast inside of him was something else, something dangerous and terrifying that if let loose could cause a lot of damage.
Mingi inhaled the fresh air as he casually strolled across the dirt path. It was a nice day, the weather not too hot and there was a light breeze flowing through that was absolutely refreshing. Spotting a nearby tree that had a cozy amount of shade in it, he sat down and opened up his backpack to take out an apple he had brought along. Taking a bite out of it, he was just about to relax when a howling sound put him on alert mode. Peeking his head out discreetly, he widened his eyes when your small figure emerged from some of the bushes a few feet away from him. Although he was ecstatic at seeing you and feeling that instant love for you, his wolf whimpered when they saw that you were badly hurt and bleeding.
"Our mate! She's hurt! Why is she hurt?"
He was going berserk at your state and then soon turned furious when a rogue wolf emerged from behind you. It was clear as daylight that he had been hunting you, Mingi could smell that you were human and thus the perfect prey for his opponent. The terror in your eyes was unmistakable as you realized you had nowhere to run or hide.
"Don't just stand there you idiot! She's our mate! We must protect her!"
Mingi quickly shifted, running out of his hiding spot and lunged at the rogue just in time before he could manage to sink his canines into your neck. Being thrown to the ground, the other wolf was ready to fight back but upon seeing Mingi's size, he knew it would be a lost battle. So instead he snarled at him before retreating back to where he came from.
Turning his attention back to you, Mingi ran up to you as he examined your wounds, letting out a whine when he saw the gruesome bite on your ankle. And his wolf cried when you flinched away at his touch when he tried to lick up some of the blood.
"Why is she afraid of us?! Can't she see we're trying to protect her?!"
Mingi sighed as he tried to calm his wolf down.
"She's human, she doesn't fully understand yet. She will soon enough, but for now, let's just try to take things slow and take care of our mate. She'll love us soon enough, but right now, let's try to calm her down."
He was the pack's playboi and there was nothing that repulsed him more than to know that he'd have someone destined to him for life.
"One person? For the rest of your life? Yeah no, I think I'll pass." He shook his head as he slumped back a sip of his beer.
"You can't run from your destiny Woo. We're all going to meet them eventually and be tied together forever." San reminded him, a tiny and goofy smile creeping into his features.
"Plus don't you think it'll be so romantic? Seeing your mate for the first time? Glimpsing into their eyes for the first time and being instantly drawn to them? Touching their hand and feeling that chemistry surge through both of you? Inhaling their scent? Oh my god- I think I'll go insane if my partner smells like mint chocolate." He giggled and squealed, making the other wolf look at him with an accusatory glare.
"No. That's silly and stupid shit. Makes you brain dead. Look. Seonghwa is a perfectly clear example of it." He pointed towards the older wolf who was strolling by with his mate, both of them looking like lovesick puppies as they nuzzled their noses together.
"Whatever you still have to attend the Mating ball." His friend scoffed.
Wooyoung wasn't too worried about it. Year after year since he was 18, he'd attend the ball and the results were the same. He'd feel no connection with anyone, only left the building with a few hickeys plastered around his neck and with his pants all wrinkled up with the belt undone. That was the only fun he'd have at the events.
But for some reason as he made out with the girl he just met, his wolf was suddenly trying to pull him away, feeling disgusted by the sloppy kisses being placed on Wooyoung's neck. Realizing he couldn't fully enjoy himself like that, Wooyoung excused himself and left the girl hanging there, looking appalled at being rejected.
"Hey man, what's your deal? You never complained before." Wooyoung argued.
"I don't know.... it just didn't feel right...."
Wooyoung himself was feeling weird as well. Hoping to clear his thoughts, he decided to take a walk around the room, looking over at the familiar and unfamiliar faces around him. Maybe he could find San and hopefully get him to agree to spike the punch or something. As he rounded the corner, a scent caught his attention, but he couldn't quite make it out. Sniffing harder, he followed the scent that was intoxicating him until he came up to a table....
And then he saw you....... with another guy's arm wrapped around you. It made his blood boil and his wolf was snarling at the stranger.
"Get your hands off her." Wooyoung spoke out instinctively, pushing past all obstacles until he tore you out of your date's embrace, who was appalled at having someone take you away.
You on the other hand didn't fight it. You couldn't and you simply let Wooyoung drag you outside until he pressed you against one of the trees in the garden. Pressing his face against your neck, he growled as he discerned another male's scent on you.
"You reek like him." He commented, rubbing his nose across your neck in hopes of scenting himself on you. You let out a scoff at his boldness.
"You have no say.... I could smell her perfume on you from miles away."

If there was anything that Jongho hated more than anything, it was rogue wolves. More specifically, he hated the damage they inflicted upon the different towns and villages on the outskirts of the city. Houses would be ransacked, people were killed or dragged off to who knows where. They were cold blooded killers that murdered indiscriminately, male, females, children, wolves, humans. They saw absolutely no distinction. And as he looked at the burning town in front of him, his hatred for them only grew.
"Search for survivors or any clue as to where they must have gone." The captain spoke out.
Everyone was mostly searching for anything that might give hints as to the rogue's hideout or their next target. There were never any survivors so they knew that it was pointless to waste their time on it. It saddened them really, to see the piles of bodies scattered about.
Jongho looked into each of the houses, at least the ones he could still get in to. He was careful of all the falling debris and concrete that could potentially trap him inside. Searching the area, his wolf suddenly got on the defense.
"I feel something... I sense something.."
Getting on his guard in case any rogue was hiding, Jongho squinted his eyes and scanned every single corner. He was slow and careful as he opened the door to every room, finding nothing but tossed furniture and blood splatter on the walls. Having found nothing, he walked back to the living room, where his wolf felt the same strange sensation, and Jongho was feeling it too. On a hunch, he moved the tapestry on the floor. Just as he suspected, there was a handle on the floor, no doubt leading to an underground basement of some sort. Bending down, he had no trouble lifting the heavy panel as he was strong even in his human form. He fanned out the dust that flew out, slightly coughing.
"Hello?! Is there anyone up there? Help!"
Realizing someone was down there, Jongho quickly climbed down the staircase to find you cowering in the corner, shaking with fear and looking awfully pale.
"Oh my God....is she...?" Jongho internally asked.
"Yes. That's our mate. And she's shivering."
Jongho quickly came up to you, taking off his coat and draping it around you in a gentle manner. Although he was saddened that you didn't react to seeing him, he understood it was because you were human and couldn't feel the bond just yet. And he didn't want to scare you, so all he could do was safely get you out of there and take you back home with him.
"It's my mate and it's my duty to protect her."
