I want to hear opinions/thoughts from others in the Disabled community about Kaz in the Netflix show๐ฅบ (of course, if you aren't disabled, you can share your thoughts too!!)
I'm physically disabled (chronic pain syndrome & a walking disability) & Kaz Brekker was the first book characters I really felt represented by. Reading SOC meant so much for me, I even read the book for the first time while being in a rehabilitation clinic and the book was crucial for me learning to finally accept myself! Nowadays, my favorite SOC character is Inej but Kaz is a close second and he will always have a place in my heart. โค
And the Netflix show? Freddy Carter portrayed Kaz so well! I first didn't like him when I watched the show in German because... the German voice actor and translated lines aren't just what I'd have expected.
I know there's always a little controversy about able-bodied actors playing disabled characters, and "faking a limp or walking disability" is usually seen as highly offensive. I can tell first-hand that it hurts incredibly much. But I think, professional acting is an exception and I love how Freddy handled this aspect of Kaz.
What are your thoughts?
Disabilities and Chronic Illness
My name is Solandis and I live with multiple disabling conditions and chronic illnesses. I have never formally discussed my conditions/illnesses on my tumblr before. The majority of the time I reblog things relating to disabilites and chronic illnesses but never have I discussed my experiences. I really don't know how many people this post will reach but I am hoping that those who do see this will either become better educated or know that they are not alone in their struggles. I have a pretty large amount of disabilites/chronic illnesses that I could probably write a whole novel about it. However, for this post I chose the ones that affect my life the most. These include epilepsy, gastroparesis, pigeon-toe, migraines, selective mutism, and a speech impediment. I am going to go into more depth about how these affect me, but first I want to explain them more for those who don't know what they are. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which the brain experiences abnormal activity that causes seizures. Gastroparesis is a rare disorder in which the stomach experiences delayed emptying. Common symptoms include vomiting, nausea, and low appetite. Pigeon-toe is another time for an in-toe walking gait. A person who is pigeon toed will walk with their toes pointing inwards. This abnormal gait is often due to an abnormality in the legs, feet, or both. For me, I have abnormalities in both my legs and feet. Migraines are commonly known and are basically just a severe headache simply explained. Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder in which anxiety inducing situations cause a person to lose their inability to speak. Despite the name, selective mutism is completely involuntary. Speech impediments is a broad term for abnormalities in the way that a person speaks. Personally, my speech impediment is stutter. My migraines are one of the triggers for my seizures. My stutter causes people to become impatient or upset with me, sometimes I forget what I was going to say, conversations take longer for me than the average person, and it's overall frustrating. My pigeon-toes affect my ability to walk, mine is quite severe and often times I use a wheelchair to help me get around. I also often times use braces on my legs and feet. My epilepsy has caused seizures to happen in the shower, in bed, in the car, at school, at the store, etc. Which has been quite embarrassing and scary to have that happen. Gastroparesis prevents me from eating my favorite foods, it has caused rapid weight loss, and severe nausea and acid reflux. My selective mutism has been quite frustrating for me and those around me especially in situations where speaking is necessary. My migraines have left me bedridden. There is so much more that I can write about my experiences with these conditions but I think most of you got the point that it sucks to deal with these disorders. If any of you have questions you want to ask me, feel free to dm me <3
