ok but can we talk about this for a second?
everyone loves this scene. this scene is great. this is easily one of my top 3 scenes in the entire series.
but i’m thinking about the lead up to this scene. i’m thinking about how terrified secunit was not 2 pages ago. i’m thinking how it would have rather left mensah and the others behind once they were safely on the shuttle, even if it meant never seeing them again, even if it meant them hating it, as long as it never had to get back on a company ship ever again. i’m thinking about how it had the choice between facing a combat unit and running to the company, and it almost couldn’t make that decision in time. i’m thinking about it desperately begging ratthi to get the shrapnel out of its knee before the shuttle docked, frantically trying to make sure it would be capable of running. getting on that shuttle and submitting itself to company space was the single most terrifying thing it could think of.
and in this moment that fear is gone. secunit is facing down company operatives for the first time since it went off inventory, and it is not afraid, it is furious. all that fear, all that existential terror and trauma it was feeling just moments ago, is transmuted all at once into incandescent rage.
because mensah is there. (because mensah is being threatened. is being insulted.) mensah looks the company in the eye and says absolutely the fuck not, and secunit’s fear vanishes, because it trusts mensah so much more than it ever feared its old masters. and that empty space where the fear was leaves room for all that anger, all that rage at the injustice against itself, against the workers, the other units, against mensah. all that anger it couldn’t afford to feel until it knew it was safe. and now it knows it’s safe, because mensah has it.
it could absolutely have taken over a gunship in that moment. it could have taken over the damn station if it tried, with all that anger. but it doesn’t, because it trusts mensah, and it wants mensah to keep trusting it back.
