i am just. thinking about the girl as a Traditional Folk Hero™ because like. i think she knows she’s supposed to be a folk hero and is doing her best to stay away from that? maybe this is obvious but i really am fascinated by her whole story rejecting the idea of being A Folk Hero™ until she has to disregard her better judgment and assume that role. from her time as a child she’s told she’s gonna be what saves the world, but once the killjoys are dead, she abandons every trapping of the life of a revolutionary and does her best to keep it that way!! she avoids conflict and the more militant-minded folks and wanders the wastes with her little companion staying out of everyone’s way because she doesn’t Want to become the story!! she’s had it Foisted On Her and doesn’t want to fill the shoes of that archetype because it’s only brought her heartache!!! except in trying to avoid it, she Embodies it. lone wanderer in the desert with an animal companion and an instrument (the boombox) harboring a mysterious and tragic past and a responsibility to save the world? there’s the start of any classical cowboy narrative. and then she fails to avoid it any longer/kickstarts it by picking up poison’s mask. because it’s Poison’s Mask, she couldn’t not. and then the story writes itself. remaining allies killed, rivalry formed with another rogue bandit (val), eventually bringing down the evil terrorizing the desert,,,,,, i just think about how the girl is So Genre Aware and does her best to avoid the consequences of said genre because she doesn’t fucking want them and then they just. happen to her anyway. nobody touch me i’m fine
