The republican majority didn't quote the Dred Scott v. Sanford case where it says that "blacks have no rights that whites are bound to respect," but it sure feels to me think they were thinking it.

Setup: SCOTUS ruled 6-3 yesterday in Louisiana v. Callais that drawing congressional districts based on race under the Voting Rights Act is unconstitutional. Today, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries — the highest-ranking elected Democrat in the House — on camera at a public event:

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐉𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝: the highest-ranking House Democrat just publicly accused six Justices of the United States Supreme Court — a co-equal branch of government — of 𝘢𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 in U.S. elections. This is not 𝘐 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨. This is 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘵𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘮𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴. The line he just crossed is the line that produced January 6 rhetoric on the right — applied to a Supreme Court majority.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐓𝐲𝐫𝐮𝐬’𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬: yesterday Tyrus said on Fox’s The Five that the new Democratic posture is 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘦, 𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 — the era of the half-apology is over. Hakeem Jeffries just confirmed it on camera. He’s not walking back. He’s not softening. He’s declaring the Supreme Court of the United States 𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 in advance of every adverse ruling for the next decade.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐝𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐬: every adverse Court ruling that lands before November 2026 will be reframed by Jeffries and the House Democratic caucus as 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘮𝘱 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨. The Democratic Party’s posture going into the 2026 midterms is now: we don’t accept the Court’s authority. The legal infrastructure of the United States — independent judiciary, separation of powers, court rulings binding on the political branches — is being publicly delegitimized by the Democratic House leader.

On this day in 1965, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed into law — made possible by activists like John Lewis and those who marched on Edmund Pettus Bridge. 59 years later, the fight for our voting rights continues. ✊🏾
