So that recent VOTN update :(
So it occurs to me that Origin of Species was published in 1859. 20000 Leagues under the Sea was 1870. I donât think Verne mentions it at all in the narrative, but it seems likely heâd at least heard about it?
Even if Verne didnât give any opinions on evolution, Arronax and Conseil, being naturalists in the 1860s, MUST have heard of Darwinism, right? Iâm not sure how quickly Origin was translated into French, but I feel like within a decade is quite likely. Though being Frenchmen, they might still mostly follow Lamarckâs theory of evolution rather than natural selection.
On the other hand, it would be hilarious if they hadnât read a French translation of Origin, Nemo has an English copy in his library for some reason, and they make Ned read it to them.

do you think professor aronnaxâs university misses him đ˘ do you think they read out his will and realized he left everything to conseil and/or the university đ˘ do you think someone told the babirusa that aronnax was lost at sea

OH NO NOT AGAIN
So what I do is I read books that came out this year exclusively in print and I read decades-old classic literature in my emails.
Mainly I do this in order to defy godâs will.
The new yearsâ Voyage the Nautilus update threw a complicated layer in to my silly lighthearted Ned/Conseil ship
They were already opposites attract, but now they want opposite things. Ned is dying to leave, Conseil is content to stay.
Conseil takes a very calm approach to it: at least no matter which happens, one of them will be happy. The idea of Ned being happy is enough of a comfort to soothe the loss of the underwater wonderland heâs fallen in love with.
I strongly doubt itâs the same the other way around, though. Conseil and Aronnax may mostly notice Ned complaining about having to eat fish all the time, but thatâs probably just the surface expression of a more deeply-rooted strain. Heâs trapped, and has been told that the ship will one day be his coffin. He just missed a celebration that he loved, and is homesick. Aronnax and Conseil donât seem to have family to return to, but we donât know about Ned! Heâs probably used to going for long stretches of time without seeing them, but at least he could look forward to itânow itâs youâll never see anyone you knew before again.
I started shipping this because âhehe wouldnât it be fun to have a drama-free background couple watching the Nemo and Aronnax slowburnâ and then they hit me in the face with THIS
