modern AU of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in which instead of being a manservant, Conseil is Professor Aronnax’s perpetual grad student

You know, the one that seems to take a decade to get their terminal degree for reasons known only to themselves and their committee chair.

Honestly, the scene where Conseil jumps off the boat to join Aronnax in the water would be just as on-brand (brother cannot let that man drown with his letter of recommendation).

Plus, imagine the comedic potential of a Conseil character arc in which he and Professor Aronnax finally decide he’s ready to defend his dissertation, but since they’re still trapped on the Nautilus and no one else on the committee is there, Aronnax decides to just have Ned and Captain Nemo sub in (despite the dubious academic qualifications of the former).

After that ordeal, Ned asks Conseil after what he’s going to do now that he’s finally free to go his own way academically.

Aronnax replies for him, “Well, obviously he’s staying on as my post-doc.”
