I was poking around a bookstore the other day and found not one, but TWO releases from within the past two years gender-swapping Moby Dick (Call Me Ishmaelle by Xialou Guo and Hell's Heart by Alexis Hall).
I haven't read either of these books, so I can't make any comments as to their content, quality, or relationship to the original novel. However, let it be said that I feel deeply betrayed by the literary community that we somehow got space lesbian Moby Dick before we got space lesbian 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Humbly petitioning the universe to rectify this issue.

modern AU of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in which instead of being a manservant, Conseil is Professor Aronnaxās perpetual grad student
You know, the one that seems to take a decade to get their terminal degree for reasons known only to themselves and their committee chair.
Honestly, the scene where Conseil jumps off the boat to join Aronnax in the water would be just as on-brand (brother cannot let that man drown with his letter of recommendation).
Plus, imagine the comedic potential of a Conseil character arc in which he and Professor Aronnax finally decide heās ready to defend his dissertation, but since theyāre still trapped on theĀ NautilusĀ and no one else on the committee is there, Aronnax decides to just have Ned and Captain Nemo sub in (despite the dubious academic qualifications of the former).
After that ordeal, Ned asks Conseil what heās going to do now that heās finally free to go his own way academically.
Aronnax replies for him, āWell, obviously heās staying on as my post-doc.ā
