So been a bit since I posted on this subreddit, but I wanted to come on here and give some tips on how to masculinize your voice and also make it feminine.

Obviously like drink water, you need to drink water after a bit you might not need as much, but beginning with voice training YOU NEED IT SO BADLY- especially if you also do a bit of voice acting an are very rusty(coughs in trans and voice actor rusty at doing voice stuff)

Now to get the voice where you want to be, obviously reference videos and stuff like characters who you want to sound like etc. YOU WONT GET ENTIRELY ACCURATE. This takes time especially if you aren't experienced in it, you will be disappointed with how you sound, and you have to acknowledge that. Anyways to get the voice where you want it to be, reference characters and people's voices that are your GOAL. So my goal is somehting similar to Tails from Sonic, so what I do is lower my pitch slightly and draw my voice back to get the raspy tone.

SO in order to do this, visualize where your pitch is, for you your pitch imagine it as your middle ground, maybe around your throat, you wanna be more feminine with a raspy voice? bring it up as you speak and draw your voice backwards, or if you want a more I guess Bayonetta voice?? Make it higher, but bring your voice forward and project it, its also in the position of the tongue, but someone could explain it better- anyways you want to masculinize it? you want a raspy voice as well? lower your voice and draw it back, giving you your raspy tone, you want a super masculine voice maybe sounding a bit russian or a bit scottish or any other accents? drop your voice(like make it lower) and produce it forward.

Probably not the best for people who can't visualize things, but it's what I do when I voice characters in my freetime and practice masculinizing my voice-

also if you are also looking for a more masculine voice reference, like maybe medieval because you just feel like it.

PLAY SKYRIM, or something like that and voice train while you play it, tis very fun to do.

also also. another tip I've learned i don't know who, but she's this trans vtuber who had like a neon hoodie, and her tip she had on a video is yawning, like if anyone can find the video and share it, then please do, she explains it VERY well in the video.

Fun fact of the day:

The pitch of your voice is determined mainly by 2 factors– your vocal cord length and their tension. The tension affects the speed at which your vocal cords vibrate, producing different sounds.

We can't rly change the length on our own, but we can affect the tension.

If you're aiming for a lower pitch, you want to relax the cords, not quite fully loosening it. You want to relax the muscles in your throat, allowing your vocal cord to vibrate more slowly, resulting in a lower pitch.

Obviously the opposite is true if you want to achieve a higher pitch.

LARYNGEAL VIBRATO-

Vibratro type that involves the larynx moving up and down to aid with the changing pitches. The pulse of the vibrato is emphasized with this laryngeal movement. Not necessarily desirable, but can still sound unique and be used stylistically.

To prevent this, place a finger on the larynx and monitor it while you use vibrato to make sure it’s not bobbing. Requires some level of larynx control.

DIAPHRAGMATIC VIBRATO-

Vibrato type that involves the pulsing of air in the lower abdomen to aid with the changing pitches. Can feel the pulsing there with the air flow. Not necessarily desirable, but can still sound unique and be used stylistically.

To prevent this, place hands on your abdominals and ribcage and make sure they aren’t pulsing while you use vibrato.

TREMOLO

A “machine gun” “staccato” vibrato sound. A rapid fire articulation of the arytenoids and articulation of the pitch rather than movement of the pitch. Considered a “fault” in singing, not necessarily desirable.

Ex- "If I Were the King of the Forest" from The Wizard of Oz

To prevent this, use a wobble, or a very slow up and down pitch movement to exaggerate that movement of vibrato.

REGULAR VIBRATO (CORD INVOLVED VIBRATO)-

Vibrato that uses the movement of the vocal folds to move between two close together pitches rapidly. When done accurately, it does not involve the larynx moving up and down, or the pulsing of the abdomen. Considered the most desirable type of vibrato.

To do this kind of vibrato, start with the wobble from above and as you get more comfortable moving between pitches, gradually increase speed.

DELAYED VIBRATO

Cord involved vibrato that starts off as a straight tone pitch and gradually eases into the moving between pitches as the sustained note progresses.

To do this kind of vibrato, start with straight tone pitch and gradually incorporate vibrato into the sustain as the pitch progresses.

STRAIGHT TONE

A singular sustained pitch with no movement or vibrato incorporated into it.

it’s because of how testosterone affects your vocal chords.

when people who have more testosterone go through puberty and their t levels increase, their vocal chords will actually gain more folds, which gives them an adams apple and will deepen their voice. People who have more estrogen don’t experience this type of change, and their voice often won’t deepen like that.

so taking testosterone can put that vocal fold growth into effect, but it can’t be reversed, which is why taking e won’t raise your voice

that said, to anyone who has voice dysphoria at all, here’s some tips from a choir student

1. warm up before doing any voice lessons. not doing this could potentially damage your voice

2. if your voice starts to hurt, take a vocal break. not doing this puts strain on your vocal chords, causing potential damage

3. drink. water. you know how instruments require maintenance to work properly? same goes for your voice. voice feels uncomfy? take a break and drink water. throat dry? drink water before warming up/doing any voice training. doing anything stressful with your voice for long amounts of time while dehydrated can cause irreversible damage to it

Sorry those didn’t work out for you. Our most recent reblog gives tips on how to deepen your voice. None of the tips nor nothing we suggested will lengthen your larynx though, you are correct. But you definitely CAN train your voice to sound different, same way people can change their accent and how the stereotypical “gay man voice” is a thing. You can make your voice sound different but you cannot make any physical changes without medical intervention somehow.
