I'm feeling fed up because a) I fell asleep again for two hours earlier and now I feel rough as, and b) I have to go to the local hospital tomorrow morning for a small thing and really don't want to, so have some viols playing an In Nomine by Orlando Gibbons.
I haven't posted any early music for a couple of days, so have this oddly plaintive little anonymous piece from Ottaviano dei Petrucci's printed 1501 collection, Harmonice Musices Odhecaton. The consort is Fretwork, playing on reproduction 16th C. viols.
More Tye for your afternoon listening pleasure!
There are certain pieces which anyone into early music should know because of their popularity and the way they were worked and reworked into other compositions. One of those pieces is La Spagna. Ottaviano de' Petrucci (or dei Petrucci, or just Petrucci) contributed to its spread through his 1501 collection Harmonice Musices Odhecaton - this track is taken from one of two albums of pieces from the collection issued by the viol consort Fretwork.

More viols and more Byrd, if you're interested!
William Lawes (1602-1645) - Pavan in G Minor: Divisions on a Pavan in G Minor ·
Timothy Roberts, organ + The Rose Consort of Viols
Just mentioned William Byrd in a reply to someone's post about recusancy under Elizabeth I - so now I feel morally obliged to post a link to his In Nomine à 4 no. I, which is heartbreakingly beautiful.
