i played in a concert with the band i'm in this evening. and my mentor, and section buddy told me that my sound is getting better!! so often during my practice im focused on what i need to change to be better.
now before a show im nervous about playing bc i feel like im just bringing everyone down with my inconsistent intonation. which is new for me and hard for me to navigate. i've always been good at playing. even if i couldn't get the runs. my tone was always spot on. its hard not being where i used to be and honestly there isnt much i can change while my vertical labret is healing.
its nice to know that my personal practice has been working and that i am infact getting better. it feels like im back at square one... especially since im playing second part now. im always grateful that my mentor doesnt only teach but she praises and compliments as well.
im oh so happy to be playing my flute again. even with this obstacle (lets talk about the lack of feeling in my bottom lip next time.) aka metal bar im the center of my lip. it feels so good to play with the band again. now if we can get rid of the preaching part that'd be great. altho living in the bible belt n most of our gigs being at churches, thats quite unlikely.
im so excited and happy to be making music again. now i just have to get into my personal music creation and i'll be even more happy.
once i get my mind and thoughts together i'll write some tips about playing the flute with a healing vertical labret piercing. right now, my only tips are: stop playing when it hurts, clean the lip plate of your flute with an alcohol wipe before playing, clean your lip after playing, and take ibuprofen before or after you start playing (to help with swelling), and you have gotta be okay with sounding breathy.
paramore has at least one song that i know of that has flute instrumentation. yall think if i get real good again (i used to play soo much better b4 the lip piercing. once this shit heals you bet your ass i'm gonna be playing scales 24/7 again) i could convince them to pretty pls have a live orchestra at their shows n get me into the flute section ?? lmao its called networking
Something I’ve never seen anyone talk about is that Wylan plays his flute on the street while STARVING.
Let me explain. Playing a flute requires a lot of breath control and therefor breath.
When someone hasn’t eaten and their body is weakened, everything makes them lightheaded. When you don’t have enough air you become lightheaded.
When you are weak and using a considerable amount of strength and air to play the flute, you are going to get LIGHTheaded.
update on my flute adventures!
so my flute works perfectly fine. my mentor was able to get sound of it. which means, i'm the problem. my mentor thinks its my vertical labret piercing thats in the way of my typical embouchure. it's touch and go with getting sound out of my flute. for whatever reason, high notes are the easiest for me right now. (but too high and im back to no sound) it's also painful asf to play and my lip is swollen and sore after dress rehearsal last night and a concert today. halfway thru the concert today, i was in so much pain. so far, i've found i need to roll my flute in more than i normally do.
i think i may lay off playing until my lip is fully healed.
my mentor thinks my piercing wont continue to be a problem or that i need to remove it to be able to play. she just thinks i need to readjust and find a new embouchure. so that's what i'm gonna do. i love my flute and i love my piercings, i dont wanna give up either of them.
srsly, any flute players with any lip or mouth piercing pls lemme know how it affected your playing and how you overcame it! <3 pretty pls

okay so i can get sound outta the head joint but not outta my flute. im beginning to think this may not be solely a problem with my embouchure. my lip has started to hurt n now im concerned about swelling with my still healing piercing
i forgot to grab my music when i grabbed my flute :/ doesn't matter so much tho...i gotta focus on my scales n getting a clear tone out of rosie anyway. but my favorite scale exercises are in that folder lol no excuses i have a laptop n there's exercises for free online. today is the day i start caring for rosie how she deserves n that means playing her. and caring for myself, playing the flute always cleared my mind. i need to get back to that. am i musician still if i no longer play? i don't want to hassle with that question anymore. i know exactly who i am and what my purpose is when i have a flute in my hands and sheet music in front of me. so until rosie is gone from my side for her tune up, i will play her. and when she comes back we'll do some more practicing and then join a band. :) lucky for me my mil found me a band!! i was lamenting about not playing n wanting to get back into it, but i want a group to play with n she was like here's a group they're pretty good n they do local events. n i was like !!! ahh this is why we reach out to our community!!!
i fear this post has gotten long and rambling. yall are going to be hearing a lot about my journey coming back to the flute. (n hopefully learning other instruments too. i rly wanna learn to play the bass guitar. im nervous ab learning how to rea d in a new clef tho.)
i need to know if any flutists with lip piercings have any tips on playing with a vertical labret. i think it may be interfering with my embouchure.
