I just had the most bizarre and frustrating day.
It started out pretty good.Ā I went to Wal-Mart to buy a new videogame with a gift card I got for Christmas.Ā Then I got home and couldnāt find the Xbox controller.
I looked all over the gaming area, which is where I left it.Ā I looked in some outlandish places.Ā My parents helped me look for it.Ā We looked for over an hour.
Eventually, we gave up and I decided to go to Gamestop and buy a used controller.Ā Iām a bit annoyed, but I figure if we do find my original controller I can return the new one and consider the difference a rental fee of sorts.
I get home, turn on the Xbox, figure out how to sync the controller, and pop the disc in.Ā This is where things start to get confusing.Ā The game isnāt showing up on the menu, and the Xbox is saying I need to connect online.Ā I guess it needs to IP address changed since we had to get a new router recently.
The only problem is that the cursor on the screen wonāt move.Ā After pressing on the controller buttons for several moments I just disconnect and reconnect it.Ā That seems to work, and I continue on.Ā Except the controller stops working over and over again, no matter what I do.Ā Despite this, I manage to start up the download for the game.
At this point, I figure that somethingās wrong with the controller, but since it works fine as long as I donāt leave it idling for longer than a few seconds, I figure I can at least try out my game, except the Xbox doesnāt seem to be noticing the disc.Ā After a bit, I try slipping another disc in.Ā The Xbox reads it no problem.
Then once again, the controller craps out.Ā I throw up my hands and decide to go back to Gamestop and ask to trade it for a different one.Ā As Iām heading out, it occurs to me that they might be able to tell me whatās up with my game.Ā Figuring that with the way my day has been going somethingās wrong with the game, I decide to bring the disc with me.
This was possibly the smartest thing I have done all day.
I get to Gamestop and get a different controller no problem.Ā While Iām being checked out, I mention the disc issue and ask if he might know how to fix it.Ā He mentions some discs are harder to reading and that you might need to clean the lens.Ā This worries me as Iām terrible with machines and would probably destroy the console trying to clean it.Ā I ask if maybe it could be the disc instead and show it to him.
He gets an odd look on his face as he opens the case open.Ā He pops the disc out and looks on the other side.
Then he tells me the disc is fake.
Keep in mind this isnāt a used game.Ā I bought it from Wal-Mart brand new.Ā It was in a case that an employee had to unlock.Ā It was sealed in plastic and taped shut.Ā How the fuck would someone switch the discs without anyone noticing the packaging had been tampered with?
The nice man proceeds to explain the art isnāt shiny enough and that the disc is actually a DVD.Ā Then he shows it to his coworker who agrees it is fake.Ā They seem a bit mystified too.
I thank them and walk over to the Wal-Mart I bought the game from.
Did I mention that the Wal-Mart and Gamestop were in the same shopping center?Ā This is the third time Iāve made this trip today, and Iāve already decided that there isnāt going to be a fourth time.
I go straight to customer service, give the lady the game and the receipt, and tell her itās a fake game.Ā I then tell her the series of events that led up to me finding out it was fake roughly five minutes ago.
I donāt think she believed me.Ā I donāt blame her.Ā It was a pretty bizarre series of events.Ā I was starting to feel like I was in a sitcom.
With my money refunded to the gift card I head straight for the gaming section to buy another copy of the same game.Ā Yes, this is where I bought the fake disc.Ā Make of that what you will.
I wait for an employee to open the locked cabinet.Ā I pay for it using the gift card.Ā Then I open it then an there.Ā Iām not sure what the workers thought of that, but I wanted to make sure I got the real deal this time.
I did, and let me just say the artwork on the two discs were completely different.Ā I donāt think whoever left the fake disc there had ever seen a real disc.
I headed home.Ā I took my anti-anxiety medicine.Ā I synced up the controller.Ā I put in the disk, which the Xbox was able to read this time.Ā I waited for the downloads, and I finally played the game.Ā The controller worked perfectly.
It should not be that frustrating to have a bit of fun.Ā Also, whoever made that fake disc: Screw you.Ā I wasted so much time trying to fix a nonexistent problem because of you.
I still reeling over all the crazy stuff that happened today?Ā Was it bad luck?Ā I mean I got two faulty products in one day.Ā On the other hand, one of those faulty products allowed me to find out the other one was fake much sooner than if I was on my own, so I guess that was sort of good luck?
Iām just glad today is over.Ā I have such a headache.Ā Ugh
