What if the red soul wasn't possessing Kris? Can the narrative of Deltarune survive a second quirky enby running around? Read on to find out!
Much like my previous AU fic, this will take the form of a plot summary, mostly focusing on changes from canon.
Before the story:
Vessie's origins are a mystery. Their first memory is of waking up on a bed of golden flowers, their consciousness bound to a child named Frisk, whose will they seemed to override. They didn't control them directly, simply giving orders. It all felt rather fuzzy and dreamlike.
They pretty quickly got the hang of their new existence, finding it to be akin to a video game. And as any good gamer knows, the first thing you want to do is grind.
They ended up doing most of the geno route, up to Sans. Frustrated after getting megalovania'd one two many times, they ended up resetting, trying a different approach. They were intrigued by Sans mentioning timelines where they might have been friends. They hadn't even considered that possibility.
The pacifist route ended up being a bit of an awakening for them. Not only was befriending the monsters a lot more enjoyable, but Frisk seemed to be enjoying it a lot more too.
By the end, they ended up choosing to leave Frisk entirely, leaving them to their future on the surface. Without a host to bind them, they faded from the physical world into the void, where they drifted aimlessly for a while.
Until they were contacted by Him.
CONTACT:
They made contact with a mysterious someone (who will be assumed to be Gaster for the sake of this fic), who implanted their consciousness into an artificial soul.
Gaster found it most excellent that he had found a volunteer willing to aid him in creating a new future. They were a little confused about what exactly they were doing, but Gaster assured them that they just needed to be themself, and everything would fall into place.
To help them be themself, Gaster created the vessel, molding it to the soul's liking. Finally, it needed a name. Channeling their best Asgore, they chose their new name. Vessie.
And with that, they felt themselves falling, as Gaster wished them good luck.
The Beginning:
Vessie woke up face down in the grass. Looking around, they found themself in front of a pair of large metal doors set into a small mound, in a clearing surrounded by trees.
Examining themself, they found that the monochrome palette they had seen in the void wasn't entirely accurate. While their skin was an almost vampiric gray, their clothes were nice and colorful. A lovely pink hoodie and jeans.
As far as Vessie could tell, this new body seemed a few years older than Frisk had been. They could feel no features on their face, yet they could see and hear just fine. Attempting to talk, they found they did have a mouth, but it was small and devoid of lips, making it nearly invisible when not open.
More importantly, they looked over and saw a satchel had landed next to them. Rifling through it, they found a few basic supplies. An antiquated cell phone, a few space food bars, some G for food, and two other items of note.
First was a ring. It was made of a burnished black metal, and looked suspiciously like the magic Sans had used back in their first run. Vessie shrugged and slipped it on their right middle finger. You don't say no to a cool skull ring.
More importantly was a note from Gaster. For now, Vessie was recommended to just explore the town, as they would be living here for the foreseeable future. An address was provided. Apparently this was where one of Gaster's associates lived. They would provide lodging if needed.
Slinging the satchel over their shoulder, Vessie excitedly set off to explore. Finding the bunker locked, they made their way north. The graveyard proved immediately interesting. The nature of the deceased quickly clued them into the alternate nature of the reality they were in.
After wandering a bit, they arrived at the school just in time to see Toriel unhugging Kris and sending them off to class. As Kris left, Toriel stopped, noticing the unfamiliar child. Vessie politely introduced themself as being new in town. Toriel apologized, as she was running late, but asked Vessie to come see her or Alphys after school if they wanted to sign up. Oh, and they would need to bring their legal guardian.
As Toriel waved goodbye and rushed to class, Vessie took a look around. Time to indulge in one of their favorite activities. Snooping. Vessie immediately began examining every billboard and locker, looking for secrets.
Before they could find much, they suddenly heard someone approaching. They ducked around a corner and took a peek. It looked to be a rather frightening dino girl with impeccable fashion sense. (I don't think her coat is that great, but Vessie is a sucker for pink/purple)
Vessie is able to hide from her, hearing her head into a classroom. But it isn't long before they hear her returning. They duck into the supply closet to hide.
However, it is much darker than expected. While fumbling for a light switch, Vessie suddenly trips, and finds themself falling into the darkness.
THE DARK:
Vessie wakes up, finding their clothes have changed from a casual hoodie, to something more resembling an assassin's cloak. More concernedly, their right arm is replaced from the elbow down with a skull-like device.
They can still move it around fine, and when they try to flex their fingers, its mouth opens and closes a little. It seems rather cumbersome. Thankfully, Vessie is ambidextrous. They notice a few slots in the back.
Seeking out an exit, Vessie quickly makes their way across the desolate cliffs. A glimmering hole in the wall catches their attention. With their left hand, they reach in and pull out a glowshard. The glowing triangular prism gives them an idea.
They try sticking it in one of the slots of their arm skull. The eyes light up, and a little fiddling shows that it can now be used to fire small laser blasts. Aiming at blotches on the walls, Vessie quickly gets the hang of aiming their new blaster arm.
Continuing along, Vessie stumbles upon a small round boy. Lancer is excited to run into anyone, and asks if Vessie is a lightner. Vessie has no idea what that is. Lancer's logic is impeccable. If you don't know what a lightner is, you must not be one. So by process of elimination, you must be a darkner!
While Vessie isn't one of his troops, Lancer excitedly asks if Vessie will be a bad guy with him. Vessie cannot resist the allure of Lancer's innocence and enthusiasm. Of course they'll help.
Things play out the same for Kris and Susie once they arrive, other then catching bits of conspiratorial giggling as the duo stalks them from above.
The pair flee as they are bombarded by a hail of spades and laser blasts.
Empty Town:
Kris and Susie arrive in castle town, and meet Ralsei. Much to his chagrin, Kris insists they know the legend already, and Lancer and Vessie come bursting in like team rocket.
Susie is confused, and Lancer tries to explain. Vessie is also curious what their motives are supposed to be. TLDR: Fountains are sweet, and the lightners want to seal them.
Once the fight starts, while Kris hurls questionable compliments at the two bad guys, Susie tries and fails to hit Vessie. They're way too nimble. After a few failed swings, she changes targets to Lancer, and hits him hard. Vessie panics and decides a tactical retreat is in order. Vessie tries to drop a cool one liner, but chokes and can't think of one quickly enough. They just flee while Lancer cries "later losers"!
Once Susie leaves too, Kris turns to Ralsei, uncharacteristic worry painting their face. "We have a problem."
The Field:
On Lancer's bike, the two put a good amount of distance between them and the lightners. Vessie is understandably concerned about Susie, but Lancer explains they have numbers on their side.
From their vantage from behind a bush, they see Susie beating up all the enemies. Maybe numbers aren't the most useful here.
They let Susie pass by, and prepare to hinder Kris and Ralsei. Vessie helps Lancer come up with more effective enemy formations. Vessie also helps Lancer navigate the daunting maze of death.
As they watch Kris and Ralsei take down the assorted enemies, Vessie is happy to see them using ACT tactics instead of violence, though they are a bit perplexed at how in sync they seem. Didn't they just meet each other?
The gang reunites with Susie, and Lancer and Vessie sneak by while they fight C. Round. Kris is able to WARN the enemy.
Soon, the two teams run into each other again. Lancer begins his usual taunting, only to be interrupted by Susie. Upon hearing her threaten to eat Lancer's face, Vessie tries to come up with a one liner involving their own lack of face, but before they can think of one, Lancer defuses the situation with his admiration of Susie. Lancer and Vessie book it while the gang has to fight smorgasbord.
Vessie and Lancer reach the great board, and Lancer has a great idea for the next encounter. Vessie helps him set up the required effects. They have a suspiciously long time to do so. For some reason, it takes them forever to arrive.
Lancer delivers his blood-based threats while Vessie hides and triggers the lightning. Susie is flustered by Lancer's admiration, and he brings up team name. Kris ends up choosing the $!$! Squad, much to Vessie's dismay. (Their own suggestion of Legion of Light goes tragically ignored)
Upon spotting C. Round, when Lancer mentions how dangerous it is, Vessie suggests hiding, and letting the $!$! Squad deal with it.
After a long and harrowing battle, K. Round is defeated peacefullishly, and Lancer is very impressed, popping out from behind the pillar to say so. Susie is drinking in the praise, but Ralsei starts criticizing her. Kris shrugs, but Ralsei is pretty upset.
Susie decides to change her ways, and becomes a bad guy! Vessie was initially afraid of her, but they've definitely warmed up to this fashionable dinosaur. The three run off while Ralsei apologizes for losing his temper.
The Forest:
After wowing the $!$! duo with their intro (Sharp Shooter Vessie!), Vessie comes up with a plan to thrash them. They decide to split up, with Vessie pressing ahead to gather materials, while Susie and Lancer come up with the design.
While gathering sticks, cardboard, and other supplies, Vessie gets a little lost in the forest, stumbling upon Broken Key B and the Original Skywalker. They also end up acquiring an egg. They don't remember how that happened.
When they finally reunite with Susie and Lancer after the maze, they are impressed that they actually have a design to share-
...
It's a duck. Why is it just a duck? Actually, they can work with this.
After spending too much time looking for secrets beyond that bit of broken collision, Kris and Ralsei arrive and behold the completed thrash machine, aka the DoomDuck.
It isn't actually a machine. It's a costume made of sticks and cardboard, resembling one of those horse costumes. Susie is the front, wielding her axe with one of the wings, while Lancer is the back. Vessie rides Susie's shoulders, using their blaster to give the duck head a laser beak.
Despite the impressive array of lasers, spades, and axes generated by this formidable duck, Kris and Ralsei disable its movement by singing, then tactically bombard the rear with peace offerings.
With Lancer thoroughly thrashed by the power of kindness, the bad guys turn face and join the $!$! Squad. Vessie sheepishly admits that they were never actually a bad guy. They just really like Lancer, and wanted to make sure he didn't get in too much trouble. Susie scoffs at the idea.
The gang makes their way to the castle, Lancer eats a weird berry, and they start talking about the purpose of lightners and darkners, at which point Vessie asks what the difference between them is.
Lancer is surprised to learn that Vessie is, in fact, a lightner. He doesn't mind himself, but he starts to worry what his father will think.
Susie threatens the king, and Lancer runs off. The Rudinn Rangers capture the $!$! Squad.
Card Castle:
Susie and Vessie get put in a cell together. The Rudinn taunts them, only for Vessie to knock them out with a blaster shot. Susie manages to use her axe to hook the keys, and they quickly break out, Vessie handling the puzzles in the way.
They run into Lancer, and tensions rise. Vessie tries to talk Susie down, but Susie ends up grabbing Vessie and tossing them back, past the puzzle door, then closes it.
Vessie manages to blast their way through it, but not before Susie nearly kills Lancer. Susie collapses, not wanting to kill Lancer. Lancer explains what is going on, and Susie promises not to hurt his dad. Vessie assures Susie that she doesn't have to figure it all out by herself.
Vessie and Susie arrive at the other cell, and free Kris and Ralsei. Susie is deeply touched by Kris saving the moss to share with her, though Vessie finds it odd that Kris knew Susie would like that. Wasn't Susie their bully or something?
Arriving at the elevator, Susie shares her plan to not hurt the king with Ralsei and Kris. Everyone is very supportive of her.
Vessie notices an odd button on the elevator panel, and they make their way to Jevil's prison. Jevil invites them outside, and they head to Seam to get the key.
Vessie is delighted to show they already found Broken Key B earlier. Kris rather smugly shows that they have Broken Key C. Ralsei grumpily points out that Kris spent like twenty minutes brute forcing the puzzle back in the field.
Jevil himself isn't anything crazy. Turns out it's a lot easier when you have two adept ACTers in the party. Susie equips the deviltail, while Kris holds onto the shadow crystal.
The party begins making their way up the castle. Vessie proves embarrassingly bad at flirting. Those sort of one-liners only work when you're as cute as Frisk.
When Rouxls reveals his first puzzle, Vessie panics, thinking it's an elaborate trap. But before they can stop her, Susie solves the puzzle. Vessie is not fooled by the second puzzle.
Vessie grabs a clubs sandwich, and the team stocks up at Rouxls' shop. They then have to confront K. Round. Again. Between Susie's idea, and Vessie sniping the crown, they two-turn it, earning Rouxls' respect(?).
Our four heroes confront King with Lancer's help. During the battle, Vessie tries to talk King down, but King calls them a despicable faker, pretending to be a darkner to steal his son's trust. Vessie retorts that he's the faker. It sounded better in their head.
King grows tired and pretends to surrender. Ralsei heals him, and King attacks. Kris tries to defend Susie, but King takes them down to critical health with a massive attack. Vessie manages to dodge, and tries to counterattack, but King keeps up the offense, until Vessie messes up a dodge, and ends up slipping off the side of the platform.
Vessie barely manages to grab on to the edge with the mouth of their blaster. King shuffles over and taunts them. Vessie ruffles through their bag and pulls something out to throw at King. King laughs and effortlessly tilts their head, the object whiffing entirely.
King summons more spades, and asks if Vessie has any last words. Vessie would smirk if they had a face (and weren't wearing a mask). "Clubs Sandwich."
King is momentarily confused, before getting attacked from behind by the revitalized Kris, Susie, and Ralsei. Thanks to this, his attention is diverted from Vessie, and shortly afterward, Lancer arrives to save the day.
Susie helps Vessie up, and Ralsei suggests it is time for the lightners to leave. Vessie says goodbye and offers the goat a hug. Ralsei very much appreciates being asked first and accepts.
After saying goodbye to everyone, Susie, Kris, and Vessie head for the fountain. Kris seems worried for some reason. Once they reach the fountain, it occurs to Vessie that the gang has no idea how to seal it. However, their soul suddenly reacts, sealing the fountain.
The Return:
Once they wake up in the empty classroom, Susie and Kris are surprised that Vessie was real. Vessie sheepishly admits this is their first day in town and they were snooping.
Susie admits she hopes to see the two of them tomorrow, and they go their separate ways. Vessie examines their ring. There is a tiny jewel embedded in it that wasn't there before. Neat.
Vessie heads out to explore the town more properly. They check out a few books at the librarby, then have a lovely dinner at the diner.
Then they go to meet with Gaster's associate. Much to Vessie's delight/chagrin, it's Sans. Sans the skeleton. Sans is as enigmatic about what he knows as always, but is happy to let Vessie crash on their couch as much as needed. He's also happy to pretend to be Vessie's uncle to get them signed up at school.
Vessie keeps exploring a bit. They run into Alphys, who agrees to meet with Vessie before school. They spot Kris having a conversation with none other than Onion-san. Then finally returning to Sans' once it gets dark.
Checking their bag, Vessie discovers the egg is still in there. They decide to put it in Sans' fridge for safekeeping.
Vessie falls asleep on the couch, excited to see what excitement tomorrow will bring.
Meanwhile, a troubled teen rises from bed. They pull out a knife, ready to enact the next part of their plan.

Thinking about writing another AU in the style of my Laios got Eaten fic. This one would be about deltarune. Basically a self-indulgent little romp where Kris and the player are separate characters.
Say hello to Vessie. They are basically a more realized version of the vessel you create at the start of the game.
(Left is light world, right is dark world)
They have a hoodie which turns into a cloak in the dark world, and a satchel for carrying snacks. Their arm turns into a magic blaster, ala Mii gunner. It isn't particularly powerful, but they are a very good shot.
They are a clever little guy who's good at puzzles and dodging, but their impulse control is lousy. Generally has a heart of gold, but loves acting like an anti-hero.
