Veronica Ryan wins the Turner Prize
It is wild to me how time changes and priorities focus. The Turner Prize used to be the art award I looked forward to most annually. Is it because my view of the world and the art world and what is important has widened? Is it because £25,000 doesn't go as far as it used to? There are a few other things I think that might contribute, I'm sure it's a combination of all of the above and more...but it is interesting. I don't even know when it shifted...

As part of Barbara Hepworth: Art & Life, The Hepworth commissioned Veronica Ryan to create a new installation. This intervention highlights Hepworth's work as an enduring source of inspiration and celebrates her artistic legacy.Â
Between 1998 and 2000 Veronica Ryan was the first artist to undertake a residency at Hepworth’s Palais de Dance studio in St Ives. At the time, Hepworth’s full-scale plaster prototypes, that are now permanently displayed at The Hepworth Wakefield, were still housed there. It therefore seemed appropriate to invite Ryan to create an intervention amongst the plasters that she knew so well.
Veronica Ryan (b. 1956) is a Montserrat-born British artist who currently splits her time between New York and the UK.
There are a number of Ryan’s pieces installed in the gallery alongside the large plasters by Hepworth. Ryan’s work is so beautiful, you really should try and get to see this exhibition.
Open Wednesday – Sunday, 10am – 4pm (last entry 3.30pm)
Entry to all 10 gallery spaces: £12 / £10 / FREE for Members, Wakefield District residents and under 16s.
