A must watch interview with Dr. Alex Hershaft who is a a Holocaust survivor, animal rights activist, and co-founder and president of the Farm Animal Rights Movement.
Hi acti-veg. How long have you been vegan and what/who influenced you to go vegan?
I’ve been vegan for 8 years now. I went vegetarian as a kid after seeing a slaughterhouse truck for the first time and finding out what it was, then I started to think about animal rights a bit more as a result of my studying philosophy. We were encouraged to think about harm, moral agents, who has rights and who doesn’t, who should be factored into moral decisions, and I just couldn’t think of any rational justification for animals not having at least fundamental rights. I found my professor’s answers to this line of questioning to be bizarrely inconsistent, and found similar hypocrisy with pretty much everyone I talked to, no matter how otherwise socially conscious the were.
I decided to look into it myself, watched Earthlings and found it deeply shocking, as most people do. I knew there and then that I had to change my lifestyle in some way, but hadn’t really done the reading to understand the ideology of veganism, or to really recognise my own speciesism. I sort of reasoned with myself that this must just be something that happens in the US, and maybe I could find a ‘humane’ farm to source my favourite products from, so I decided to try and see it for myself at a local farm.
I managed to to sneak my way into a farm visit with a veterinary student I knew. It was a ‘high welfare’ local dairy farm, somewhere they send students to observe and learn best practices. I saw a dairy cow clearly in pain at having had her calf taken from her, heard the casual admission from the farmer as to why she was distressed and bellowing- I decided there are then that I didn’t want to be a part of it. I went vegan pretty much overnight after that, and set about educating myself on animal agriculture as much as I could, so that I could share what I’d learned with others. It turned out to be one of the most unequivocally positive decisions that I have ever made.
Snek in my boot.
I'm changing breakfast up a little this morning with tumeric and chocolate swirl nicecream. I really enjoy tumeric, even in nicecream which is probably not going to be everyone's cup of tea. I often feel like Sunday's are my most productive days, which probably goes against the norm, but I love keeping busy on a Sunday. I always start my Sunday bright and early with a run + work out and it always makes my days a 100% better. This morning my cat joined me for my work out, although he spent his time grooming himself and then sleeping.
