Day 12. (Jan. 18, 2021.)Â
The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) is the U.S. armed forcesâ language school with a history dating back to the Second World War when the U.S. Army began teaching soldiers Japanese at the historic San Francisco Presidio. Now DLIFLC is one of the accredited universities run by the U.S. Department of Defense for the education of their own members. The university has its main campus in Monterrey, California, with a branch campus in Washington, D.C.Â
DLIFLC has a few good educational resources online, among which is the âLegends and Folktales.â It features some of the famous folktales from around the world that shape nationsâ identities and cultures. This is great for kids of all ages as well as for grown-ups!Â
Other resources include:Â
Cultures in Perspective:Â https://fieldsupport.dliflc.edu/productList.aspx?v=cipÂ
Cultural Orientation:Â https://fieldsupport.dliflc.edu/productList.aspx?v=coÂ
Global Language Online Support System (GLOSS): https://gloss.dliflc.edu/Default.aspx -- features lots of listening and reading exercises in many world languages (and their dialects!) from beginners to advanced levels.
Spanish Phone Conversations: https://phone.dliflc.edu/default_spanish.asp -- Learn how the Spanish language differs in Argentina, Cuba, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, and Peru.Â
These resources, while originally designed for U.S. military personnel readying for deployment abroad, are also great for your kids if youâre homeschooling or if the school is still closed due to COVID.
Note: These are online resources only. DLIFLC does not have a physical museum.

Day 3. (Jan. 9, 2021.)Â
Letâs jump over to the West Coast. San Francisco was one of the first U.S. cities that opened its door to Asia, being one of the major Pacific ports and a major immigrant arrival point. The Asian Art Museum in San Francisco is impressive.
