Uranus was originally named... George.
Uranus is generally regarded by English speakers as having the most amusing name of any of the planets. But it was almost even more amusing. When English astronomer William Herschel identified the planet in 1781, he named it the Georgium Sidus (the Georgian Planet) in honor of his patron, King George III.
It was later named Uranus after the Romanized name for the Greek god of the sky, Ouranos.
