Traveling With Needy People
Traveling with needy friends is the polite way of saying traveling with difficult friends..lol Imagine traveling with a friend who is accustomed to controlling everything and everyone their environment. A person who is used to using their job and their money as the face of their existence. This is the person who always wants to pay for everyone's food and drinks; as if you don't have money of your own, just to show off, maybe they want the points on their card...or maybe just to feed into the persona they've created. Now this friend is traveling with people on equal footing on a five star luxury vacation which is all inclusive and upscale with no tipping. OMG the horror of not being able to throw money around and impress people..LOL oh yes it clearly hurt the self made brand she created for herself.
She complained from the moment she agreed to join the trip to the moment it was over..lol Staying positive in the face of this kind of negativity is exhausting... I swear if I had to give one more positive, motivational "You go girl!" to get this girl to go, I was sure to fall faint..lol It takes ZERO energy to be negative but it takes EVERYTHING you have within you to combat it and remain positive..So what do you do?!!
Well, thankfully we were in a legal cannabis state so edibles helped tremendously but that was no match for Negative Nancy. So, in addition I provided two mindful meditation sessions which only helped temporarily, like until the very next activity. Short lived huh? Plus encouraging words, positive affirmations, offers of libations, tea, dancing, prayer.......whew!... geesh!.. I can't!....
Ultimately the best thing you can do when traveling with needy (difficult) people is the following:
1. Come to grips with the fact that this is your friend and you knew they were difficult before you decided to travel with them
2. Don't waste time on your trip trying to help them enjoy the trip more, use that energy for yourself.
3. Let them be miserable alone and don't feed the beast by acknowledging the negativity and attempting to combat it (See #2)
4. When you find yourself wondering "What am I going to do with this person?" answer like Big Sean..."I'm gonna do me!" and then do you! Enjoy yourself and let them enjoy that view!!!
Hopefully they will get the hint when you ignore their complaining, if not well you ignored them any way! Happy travels!
