Moreau chains the Devil, or describes said chaining, in The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996). There results the odd snout, claw, or hoof in the sublime quest of the good/very weird Doctor, but hey. Marlon Brando quite boggles the mind, and David Thewlis projects unconvincedness to the Nth degree. A hugely underrated film that is really only recently getting its due.
Thewlis becomes, if possible, even more unconvinced, as he wildly proclaims “This is the *most* OUTRAGEOUS spectacle...”, “Look at these people!!!!”, and such. Brando has seen it all before, and patiently allows David T. to vent.
Hmmm.
Deep thoughts being had, of a devil-chaining persuasion.
Unconvinced. Openly skeptical.
Why the skepticism?? Well, let me thoughtfully parse it out.

RE: Anthony Bourdain explored the "other" Hawaii in S5E7 of Parts Unknown. Bypassing Waikiki tourist traps, he highlighted the working-class food scene, the multicultural history of plantation workers, and local figures on Oahu, Maui, and Molokai. As though it is failing him in real time & thus he has to resort to numbing out of reality.
That is what my college/hs classmate said on the posting board for everyone to read: "Some of us drink to forget so we don't feel anything." I was so embarrassed for this person bc they pretty much admitted this to the entire university, including professors.
Emotional resonance is the capacity to evoke a shared feeling, connection, or empathetic response within an audience, character, or relationship. It goes beyond merely conveying information, transforming rational facts into deeply felt, memorable experiences.
Mary Poppins: Let's Go Fly a Kite (David Tomlinson) Given the backstory of the author for Mary Poppins, who was masking the hideous reality of living with a drunkard for a father, she rewrote her childhood into something cheery. "Mouthful of sugar makes the medicine go down.." She has all the makings of someone who has toxic positivity, who will not face the grim reality of life, but I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
Yes, P.L. Travers’ childhood was notably tragic, and creating Mary Poppins was a way for her to construct an idealized, magical world to escape those grim realities. Here are the specific, concrete facts behind her life & the beloved story:
Former Vice President Kamala Harris said Wednesday that the Biden administration was right not to pressure the Department of Justice (DOJ) t
