Some quotes from "‘You can’t be the player’s friend’: inside the secret world of tennis umpires" article
Here is the link to the full article - it's well worth the read - and thanks again to @bluespring864 for sending it to me
one of the most interesting aspects of the article is how umpiring is a more isolating job than being a player
they are not allowed to be public figures
During tournaments, they can be seen up in the chair – but once the match is over, they are not allowed to explain their decisions in press conferences or on social media. Their code of conduct prohibits them from meeting journalists.
yet with the rise of the social media
Some umpires have become celebrities in their own right.
and they can't exactly be friends with anybody but their small group
BUT THERE'S UMPIRES GROUP CHAT
Lahyani shares the most interesting videos on a WhatsApp group for all the top ATP chair umpires.
Happy opening day! I'm going to go on record that MLB's implementation of automated ball-strike as a challenge system is dumb. There's technology already in use which relays ABS to umpires through an earpiece in real time. This allows umpires to correct calls in real time and serves as a tool that improves umpire accuracy. A challenge system will cause unnecessary game delays for reviews, add to friction between umpires and players, and because challenges are limited there will still be bad calls that go unchallenged.
Once again, it's time to play, yes, you guessed it... YOU MAKE THE CALL....
Once again, the pitch is clearly a ball, but the home plate umpire calls it a strike. And once again, it was the 3rd strike, and it gave Jazz an out. We need ABS or the umpires need glasses. I'm voting for both. This happens so much, and it's always the 3rd strike to get the out and take my boys' opportunity to bat away from them. It happens to the Yankees all the time, but not as much to our opponents. We've lost games because of these very, very bad calls so something has to be done to correct this problem. And it needs to be done immediately. ABS is the solution that we need to keep the umpires from making bad calls and losing games for teams. I have so many photos of these bad calls. I think I'm going to put them together in a strongly worded letter and send it to the Commissioner of Baseball. I'm tired of watching this happen. Thankfully, this bad call isn't going to cost us the game this time because it's still early.
At least Jazz kept his composure this time and didn't get thrown out of the game for pointing out the umpire's mistake. And what was Aaron Boone doing through all this...
Chewing and spitting as usual. Buy a clue, Boone. Stand up for your players. Learn to do your job well, please. Between these bad calls by umpires and your inability to make a good lineup, user your players wisely, and understand how to use the bullpen, the Yankees are now in third place, although offense has been on fire. Because of your pitching decisions, we lost a game where we scored 12 runs. We lost 5 out of 6 games earlier in the season, where we scored 5+ runs in every one of those games. The Yankees need a new, good manager. My boys deserve much better than this. Just saying...
LET'S GO, YANKEES!!!!!
No men’s cricket today so - reluctantly - I’m watching a women’s match. Lancashire v Somerset at Old Trafford.
Why are women umpires ALWAYS overweight?
