Bloodlines Book 4 The Fiery Heart by Richelle Mead
Excerpt from Chapter 22 of the Fiery Heart
"You don't know the sacrifices I'm making here for you," he hissed, his eyes cold. Keith's glass one had more feeling. "You have no idea how lucky you are that we're doing this for you. The darkness has corrupted you so much that I don't know how long it'll take to fix. But we will. No matter how long or how difficult, we will undo whatever that Moroi boy has done to you."
I managed a wavering smile, tasting blood in my mouth. "You sure about that, Dad? Because he's done everything to me."

Okay, so I was daydreaming thinking about Adrian Chase yesterday.
Hear me out; the reader is someone on a crime scene cleanup crew and kidnaps him. đ
Reader hears a rumor that Vigilante has been spotted in a hospital nearby. This person has been studying anything they can get their hands on about Vigilante, but why exactly?
They go to the hospital planning on getting more information, only to witness some dude jump out a window. Obviously, they're going to investigate; they somehow put the pieces together.
How are they going to take down Vigilante, may you ask? Shoot him with a tranquilizer. (They've got friends in the superheroing business)
Then, they might freak out about kidnapping him. (Reader: "Man, I did not think this through... I honestly didn't think I'd get this far." đ)
Adrian confused as to why he's being held hostage by this person. His mouth going a mile a minute, asking a ton of questions.
Reader remembering they actually forgot to tell him why they kidnapped him. Explaining that they clean up crime scenes and have to clean up almost everyone of HIS crime scenes in and around the local area(s).
(Adrian: Okay? *genuine confusion*
Reader: I haven't been able to take a vacation in *number of years/months*. I've actually been contemplating signing myself into the psych ward just to get away!
Adrian: You do seem really tense... )
*vibes like this scene* âŹď¸âŹď¸âŹď¸âŹď¸âŹď¸âŹď¸
I thought about actually writing this, but I've got a lot going on and haven't the mental energy to do so, at the moment. If you like this idea, feel free to use it, but please tag me?
A/N: I knew where this was going, but I didnât realize how many warnings I could/would have to list. Please, please, please let me know if I missed one and Iâll add it to the list/in the tags! Which leads me to a fun fact: this is the longest list of warnings I have ever written or had to put togetherâŚI hope this doesnât become a habit for me because that list is đŹ
Warnings: betrayal, kidnapping/taken hostage, hostage situation, restraints, villainous monologuing, implications of torture, slight torture, physical violence, violence, manipulation, emotional manipulation, emotional distress, reference to mass murder/allusions to mass murder, light choking/choking, knife/knives, cutting/being cut, blood and blood mention/references

Heroâs eyes cracked open and fell shut. They did this a few more times before slowly fluttering open and squinting against the dim light. Groggily, Hero tried to move around and force the numbness from their body but found that they couldnât move a muscle. Harsh rope dug into their wrists and ankles. Hero sagged against the pole theyâd been forced to kneel in front of in the hopes of gaining some slack to give their knees some relief, but to no avail. They were tied to the pole with the way their arms and legs had been pulled behind them. Frowning, Hero forced themselves to focus on what had happened.
Like sand falling through an hourglass, their mind replayed a shuffled and disorientated slideshow of all that had happened this week. Through the bits and pieces of their scattered memory, Hero was able to put together what had happened and just where they might be as their body stumbled into full alertness.
Supervillain. And Superhero.
Somehow, the two had become partners. And now they needed to get Hero out of the way.
Theyâd stolen the artifacts. Somehow, Superhero was part of Supervillainâs plan, but Hero couldnât wrap their mind around the idea of the two working together toward a common goal, much less a common goal that resulted in the need for Superhero to betray their friends and the Agency.
Hero swallowed dryly.
Supervillain was a known sadist. They loved to torture people, to torture heroes. Hero had heard about the horrors, had seen the evidence of the master criminalâs atrocities. They didnât always leave bodies in their wake. Sometimes they left broken people and shattered minds. They left scars that never quite healed.
They left empty husks where there used to be lives full of vigor.
How could Superhero work with or love someone like that?
Hero began their struggle anew. The harsh rope bit into their wrists, bound just a smidgen too tight. Their eyes swept over what they could make out of their surroundings. It was a crude cell, like a barred off portion of a basement. The corner they had been so unceremoniously dumped in while unconscious was damp and hard. Not only were their knees numb with pain, but any sort of hope they couldâve had was slowly shrinking.
Hero spread their fingers, wiggling their hands around as much as they could. Tears dotted the corners of their eyes as they could feel the rope scratch and peel away their skin. If they ever saw Superhero again, they were going to kill them. Justice be damned. No one had ever betrayed them as cruelly as Superhero had.
If they could only get their fingers to find a knotâŚ
Something creaked. Hero glanced at the dusty, dingy beams running along the ceiling above them. As the footsteps, they determined, moved across the floor above, the wood joists groaned. Bits of grime, dust, and dirt fluttered to the floor. Hero quickly blinked against the particles and turned their face toward the damp floor. A triangle of light pooled from somewhere in their peripheral vision, but not at the same level as they were. The light came from above, and if Hero craned their stiff neck, they could just make out the first step of a flight of stairs.
So the pair really had stuck them in a basement cell.
Just as quickly as the light had appeared, it was gone with what could only mean the door had been shut. Metal groaned, another sign of the ill-kept basement dwelling. With every creak of the staircase, one of their two captors came closer, and Hero wasnât certain which they dreaded more: the friend who had taught them what it meant to be a hero and to act heroically even when it was difficult to do so or the criminal who had been Superheroâs corruption.
Hero snarled as the familiar face of their mentor came into view. The dim light shone upon their clean and unperturbed features.
âHow dare you show your face,â Hero growled, jerking against their bonds as if they could surge forward and crowd Superhero menacingly. Their short-lived burst of effort only afforded them a stinging pain as the rope twisted further into their skin. A thick trail of warm liquid ran down their wrists, surely dripping like raindrops from their skin to stain the floor with their blood. It didnât help that Superhero was a full head taller than them, but if Hero had learned anythingâespecially given recent eventsâit wasnât size that mattered. It was how you carried yourself, and right now there was murder in their blood.
âHero,â Superhero dared to begin. âI didnât come here to fight with you, or to harm youââ
âYou shouldnâtâve come at all,â Hero spat. âHow dare you come here and act like youâve done nothing wrong!â
Superhero seemed to shrink away for a second. Hero knew the instant a dangerous switch had flipped inside of their mentor and former friend, but couldnât find it in themselves to be frightened of the anger licking like flames inside their friendâs eyes. As if they were punching back at their own conscience, Superhero squared their shoulders and loosely wrapped a hand around one of the cell bars.
âYou think youâre so righteous?â Superhero said accusingly. âYou think that because you arenât willing to do whatâs needed to end crime once and for all that youâre more of a hero than me or even Supervillain?â
Hero eyed them warily, noticing a hint of mania in the older heroâs eyes that theyâd never seen before.
âYou really want to stand there before me and argue that, after everything theyâve done, Supervillain is the real hero in all of this?â
âMore of a hero than youâll ever be if you donât come around.â
âCome around to what?â Hero clenched their fists. They werenât any closer to escaping, let alone figuring out what Superhero meant by their rambling. Had Supervillain managed to brainwash them? Was it some kind of conditioning? Hero thought back to a time when Superhero wouldâve been taken captive by Supervillain, but couldnât remember anything. So maybe it wasnât that so much as a manipulation and Superhero was only a pawn in whatever end goal Supervillain had for themselves.
âI was wrong.â Superhero shook their head mournfully. âI thought maybe you could understand, but they were right. Youâre too self-righteous, an idealist.â
âThen helpââ
âThat wonât work on me, you know that.â Superhero turned away from them, taking a step into the shadows from which theyâd descended only moments earlier.
âI hope we meet again in hell.â Hero found themselves saying.
Superhero came to a dead stop where they stood.
âBecause when we do,â Hero continued, fully understanding every word they were saying now, and that they truly meant it. Every word. They meant every word in their heart, no matter how bitter they tasted on their tongue. âI will ruin you. I will destroy whateverâs left of that twisted soul of yours until thereâs nothing left for even the devil to recognize your sins by.â
âCareful, Hero,â a voice said from the shadows beyond where Superhero had frozen.
Supervillain.
âYouâre beginning to sound like me now.â
Hero held their breath as the master criminal strolled into view. How long had they been there? How long had they been watching and listening to them?
Supervillain paused beside the corrupted hero and spared them a glance. A look passed between them that Hero couldnât decipher beyond the glee in Supervillainâs eyes and the grim line of Superheroâs lips.
âWell,â Hero licked their lips, âyou know what they say about when good men go to war.â
Supervillainâs lips pulled into a mirthless grin, one that was hungry and very much like a predatorâs. âGood men never live long enough to go to war.â
âI sincerely beg to differ,â Hero challenged, lifting their chin defiantly. Deep down in their gut, their resolve roiled. It was like their power of sight was rallying, but for once, Hero couldnât discern what it all meant, or where this newfound confidence was coming from.
They were surely going to die at Supervillainâs hands. There was no denying that, so why was there this surge of faith and assurance? Why would their gift bolster them now, in what was to be their final moments of sound mind and body, if not life?
Supervillainâs grin only widened as they stalked closer, leaving Superhero standing between where the cellar stairs must be and Heroâs little cell. In the few prideful steps it took Supervillain to reach their cell and then to unlock the rusted door, Superheroâs shoulders had slumped. They cast a hesitant glance back at the master criminal joining Hero in the cell.
âYou should really stay,â Hero said, glaring back at Superhero and their hesitation. âAfter all, youâre partners now, arenât you? Shouldnât you be here for this, or can you not stomach the consequences of your actions? It must be eating away at you. I know it would ifââ
Their head snapped to the side, their cheek stinging with pins and needles. Hero worked their jaw, eyeing Supervillain reproachfully.
âYou call that a slap?â Hero smirked. âA play-fighting kitten has a harder hit than that.â
Supervillain backhanded them again. Hero took a breath and blew it out slowly. From the corner of their eye, they saw the little slice of light from above and watched it disappear just as quickly. It was like the cowardly traitor had never been there. All Hero was left with was the company of a smug criminal smiling down at them.
They grinned back at Supervillain a little too sweetly. âI bet youâre not even strong enough to wield the Ancient Sword, and thatâs why you need Superhero, isnât it?â
Supervillainâs jaw clenched. Their hands curled into fists at their sides. âThis was their plan, darling Hero. Iâm just here to make sure they get what they want.â
Hero cocked their head to the side, working the criminalâs words over in their head and piecing it together with what Superhero had vaguely babbled about earlier.
âAnd Iâm certainly not going to let the likes of you get in their way.â
âAw, Iâm flattered,â Hero laughed. âYou couldnât beat me in a fair fight, so you had to go through all this trouble with Hitman just to get to me? That contract mustâve cost a pretty penny. Whose money did you use? Was it Politicianâs?â
Supervillainâs hand snapped out and wrapped around Heroâs neckâjust under their chinâand angled their head back sharply. Leaning in closer, Supervillain braced their other hand above Hero on the pole that they were bound to. They loomed over them with a dark shadow across their face that Hero could only describe as loathing.
âThey wonât be coming for you, if thatâs what youâre getting at,â they hissed.
âNaturally.â Hero forced the words from their throat. Supervillain wasnât choking themânot yetâbut the placement of their hand was at such a place under their chin that it was difficult to speak. âThough between the two of you, I did think they were a more likely candidate to effectively wield the sword. I mean, the legend even says it only takes to the strong. Only weak people like you have to go to lengths such as this to hold any power over others. Wouldnât you say so?â
Hero didnât know where the words came from, only that they hit their mark. They could see it in Supervillainâs eyes, the way they widened a fraction and then returned to their simmering glare. Hero latched onto the thread of hope their sight was gifting them. They knew no matter what, it wouldnât end well for them, but at least their powers were giving them something to weaponize against Supervillain. Even if they couldnât save themselves, they could plant a seed of doubt in Supervillainâs mind, and with any luck, someone else would be able to exploit it or it would delay the plans theyâd made with Superhero.
âBut enough about that old thing,â Hero said. âCan we talk about how great of a kisser Superhero is?â
Supervillainâs lips twitched.
âOh,â Hero exclaimed, their own eyes widening as if theyâd said something they didnât know was supposed to be a secret. âThey didnât tell you about us?â
Supervillain reeled back, dropping their hand from Heroâs throat, but not from the pole.
âIâm sorry,â Hero said genuinely, in spite of the fact that they were lying through their teeth. âI didnât realize your relationship was so fragile that they wouldnât want to tell you about us.â
The master criminalâs nostrils flared. Their eyes narrowed impossibly.
âSometimes I miss them. What we had, you know?â Hero shook their head as if they were reminiscing with an old friend and sharing secrets about their old flames. âGod, that stupid laugh, you know the one when you tell an awful joke, but they laugh like itâs the funniest thing in the world and it brings out their dimââ
Heroâs shoulders curled inward, but they couldnât quite double over given their current position with their hands tied behind their back and the pole. They hadnât even seen the kick coming, or the inclination to do so cross Supervillainâs face. Heaving, they glanced up at Supervillain, nearly forgetting themselves and the part their intuition had been playing at. And god what a dangerous game it was they were playing.
âI guess you donât like their dimples,â they wheezed, attempting a weak chuckle.
Supervillain didnât say a word. They didnât even look at them as they whirled around and opened the door to their cell with stiff movements.
âIâll be here if you ever want to talk about that annoying thing they do when they eat!â Hero called out hoarsely as Supervillain receded into the shadows of the basement.
But they werenât to be left to their own devices for too long. And when Supervillain came back, it wasnât only the wave of anger rolling off of them that returned with them. No, they came with a tray of tools that sent Heroâs stomach into turmoil.
âEvery word,â Supervillain said, picking over their instruments of torture. âEvery word you said, youâll pay for.â
âDo you think theyâll still love you if you destroy their oldest friend?â
âDo you think thereâll be enough of you for anyone to recognize?â
âTheyâll know. Itâs why they canât stand to be here right now, why they couldnât help.â Hero shifted on their calves, their knees aching. âDonât you see? There will always be a part of you that disgusts them. Whatever it is youâre giving them with that sword, it wonât ever be enough. And whatâs to say when theyâre doneâŚâ Hero trailed off, wracking their brain for an answer to the jumbled puzzle twirling around their mind. âWhen theyâre done purging the world of villains, whatâs stopping them from turning the sword on you? Itâs not like theyâd need it, really. If I remember correctly, their brilliance doesnât mesh well with you, does it?â
The master criminal paused. Their hand had since halted in place, hovering over a set of brass knuckles. Their eyes snapped to Hero and then back to the tray of tools at their disposal.
âYou may think youâre clever, dear hero,â they tsked, âbut youâre not. I know what youâre doing, and it wonât work.â
âHasnât it though?â Hero tilted their head up, keeping their voice innocent and smooth.
Supervillain plucked up a plain knife. Hero almost sagged in relief, but couldnât find it in themselves as they held the hard stare boring into their soul.
âWhat was it you said again?â Supervillain pondered, squatting in front of them as they dangled the knife absently between their fingers. âOh yes, âI will ruin you. I will destroy whateverâs left of that twisted soul of yours until thereâs nothing left for even the devil to recognize your sins by.ââ Supervillain lightly trailed the knife along Heroâs cheek. Their eyes turned contemplative. âI doubt anyone will be able to identify your body.â
Hero swallowed against the dryness encroaching on their tongue. They wouldnât make it to the next sunrise if they couldnât change something about their situation soon. Maybe if they screamed loud enough, Superhero wouldnât be able to bear it. Maybe someone was coming for them. It wasnât likely that anyone would find them in time.
At the first slash of the knife across their skin, Hero unleashed the loudest, most bloodcurdling scream a human could conceivably produce. If they were to be tortured, so was Superhero. All these âmaybesâ meant nothing as Supervillain kept slashing away at their skin, their clothes, at their dignity.
As their skin grew stickier and Supervillain moved on to different tactics and tools, Hero found themselves wishing they had seen Superheroâs betrayal coming sooner, had known it that night when theyâd gone to their safe house. But how were they to predict that the cityâs greatest hero had taken to the extreme? Or that they wouldâve fallen in love with the likes of Supervillain? One thing was for certain, if Other Supervillainâif Politician, they reminded their fraying state of consciousnessâwas still out there and Supervillain hadnât gotten to them yet, there was still hope for the city, and the world. Superheroâs villain-genocide could still be stopped.
Heroâs Sidekick and Villainâs Sidekick are in love. Neither Hero nor Villain know, and their sidekicks donât dare tell them out of fear for what their bosses would do to them. It was no secret that Hero and Villain positively loathed each other, and given the chance would not hesitate to drive a knife through the otherâs heart.
One day, H.Sidekick and V.Sidekick are out late at dusk together. Itâs H.Sidekickâs day off, and V.Sidekick told Villain that they were out robbing some store. The night was chilly, but not uncomfortably so, and it gave them an excuse to cuddle close to each other on the high rooftop of some office building, as they watched the sun set over the city scape.
Neither of them knew what happened. One minute they were sitting next to each other, the next they were being ripped away. H.Sidekick cried out in fear as a knife was brought to their throat, pressing so hard against their skin that a bead of crimson blood rolled down their neck.
Multiple pairs of hands wrapped around V.Sidekickâs body, pinning their arms behind their back, and forcing them to their knees. Villainâs henchmen stood all around them, weapons drawn.
âWell, well, well,â Villain drawled out, as they pressed the knife a bit harder into H.Sidekickâs throat. âMind explaining exactly what is going on here?â
