Somnium

He had known for some time that the waking world was a rehearsal.

The same arguments in different costumes. The same hurt children dressed up as something sharp and difficult, convinced that being difficult was the same as being interesting.

So he learned to leave.

Not in sleep exactly, in something deeper than sleep. Consciousness beneath consciousness, where inspiration bounced beside him like a greyhound, joy needed no explanation, and the path ahead was lit from within.

Each return was harder. The landing rougher. The contrast more brutal.

But something was being transferred.

With every journey back he was a little less afraid. A little more himself. The dream and the waking were moving toward each other, like a key that had always known the lock, arriving home at last.

He could face the real layer.

Just one more day.

Which was, it turned out, all he ever needed.

Affirmation: I am already the person I meet in my dreams. I am walking toward myself.
