Maybe Jax wound up killing someone with his car or he was just running away from home and that led him to find the C&A office building with the game in it? I wonder if that's at least one of reasons Caine dampens the players memories is so they don't abstract due to their own trauma in addition to possibly wanting them to stay forever so he's not lonely (unless it winds up being true that they have no bodies to go back to because they're just brain scans of previous players and they therefore have no choice in leaving :/).
