The clock is ticking I realize.
Counting down the moments,
Until the end of my childhood.
Do I want to say goodbye,
Is it wrong to feel excited but also terrified?
I feel the excitement of growing up,
That comes with adulthood.
Of being one step closer,
To turning my dreams into my reality.
With the boy whose name is written next to mine.
But there’s the terrifying idea,
Of saying goodbye to the little girl in the photographs,
The little girl I can never be again.
Of going out into the world,
Of having to make my own decisions,
“You’re so mature for your age,”
But is that supposed to be a compliment?
I didn’t mean to grow up fast,
To see the world in the eyes of someone older.
I am only going to be 17.
Still learning how to be soft,
How to be strong without hiding.
Before this new chapter ends.
But am I ready to close the 16th chapter in the first place?
Am I ready to move onto chapter 17?
The year-long countdown has begun,
Until I have my 18 candles.
So I guess I need to say goodbye to sweet 16,
And say hello bittersweet 17.
Don't get me wrong, I'm really excited to finally be 17 but I am a bit sad for saying goodbye to sweet 16 and I feel so old now. And I think I'm in my poetry era? Cause this is the 3rd poem I've posted in the past month.
