so i went to read the user guidelines myself to see if i could appeal the mature flag on the art i just reblogged and they genuinely do demand a content label be applied to art work that depicts sex.

remember how tumblr used to hand out badges for unique posts? i think they realllly want the og post number to go up, and they're trying to artificially inflate this number; 1 post with 10k notes is somehow worse metrics than 4 posts with 2500 notes each or some other split. it will make the site look more active in the short term until the sheer loneliness of posting on a site where, one degree removed, you're shut out of the conversation you yourself started (if the update is implemented as is) or you lose track of conversations you're trying to participate in or follow (only op sees total notes) collapses user participation and kills the site.
maybe that's the point, though. think of the way a failing company treats its employees when the shareholders are getting ready to sell it off; senior employeer are fired, everything is optimized to shit and made idiot proof until new employees find the work site more intuitive than senior employees, because even though everything is now terrible and ass-backwards, at least it's the industry standard!
the culture of this site, it's hatred of things like shorts, algorithms, ads, monetization, makes it hard to profit off it. so nuking the old userbase that tanked this site's reviews, completely ignored the stupid tiktok clone feature, will never buy anything off any tumblr ad ever even if they were good... well, it can only lead to profit. the fact that people have been using this site as their diary, a record of the movies and books they watch, share their hobbying, that they have friends here... well who gives a shit about that. that doesn't make money.
