So in the Sims 2, if you run dxdiag on your computer (just search it on your desktop screen) you can see how much texture memory your graphics card has room for.
I mistakenly set mine much lower with Graphics Rules Maker, which is a godsend. I increased it to just under the limit which was 8k MB.
Now I can have skyboxes, full neighborhood lot distance and fade distance off, and it looks crystal clear like it used to.

in case you still need actual proof at this point that the trick where you set up an automatic windows wipe of the whatever cache memory every five minutes is the ultimate pink flashy fixer - i just launched my game, popped onto a lot for literally two minutes to check something, had pink flashing back in the hood, loaded a second lot no problem, and had a totally normal hood view again two minutes after that. rinse and repeat checking on a third lot and returning to hood view.
Bright CAS Fix (without using the DXVK fix)... or at least workaround
So, as some of you noticed, with TS2 on the newer graphic cards, this âBright CASâ glitch occurs on some custom hair or clothing meshes. In-game they are all fine, but in CAS they look this weird. BTW, Iâve got this set of hair conversion(s)Â here.
I created a thread over at the MTS Help forum to see whether someone knows a fix for this... but since it only affects A FEW meshes and not all of them, I went to investigate further. I went to compare EAâs meshes with the custom ones which had this issue.
I saw that this mesh does not have a line âHasTangentArray:â in the comments section of its blend groups. So, what I did was the following:
I added the one extra line âHasTangentArray:â into the comments of each blend group and exported as a new mesh file.
Then I replaced the current mesh with this fixed one in SimPE, cleared the cache files, etc. and when I loaded the game... I noticed that it was all fine now! No weird CAS lighting at all. :3
So, if anyoneâs also experiencing weird lighting issues on custom hairs or clothing meshes in CAS, you could try this workaround!
Making Reshadeâs depth-dependent functions work in The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection
I donât know if anyone else is even interested in this, but I have spent days trying to figure it out so I might as well post what worked for me.
(skip to the bottom if you just want a quick rundown)
Iâd been using Reshade in my game, and I loved using all the functions that work with it, for brightening up my game, smoothing edges, sharpening lines, etc. etc. But there are a lot of effects that Reshade has that are dependent on depth, and my game doesnât allow Reshade to see the depth. Thereâs a post-processing mod by Pine and the version dreadpirate made with their blue snow fix but when I installed either of these, it slowed my game down considerably, to the point it was unplayable. But with the mod in, Reshade was able to use the depth buffer it created, so even with the post processing effects turned off, I could use Reshadeâs depth-of-field functions and tweak everything the way I liked through Reshade.Â
The other option was not using the mod at all, and just turning off smooth edges in my game. Depth functions are only possible when your in-game anti-aliasing is turned off. The problem I ran into is that Iâd have insane screen tearing and flickering, with objects completely disappearing. Through watching a couple of youtube videos of the same problem, the recommended solution was to change the graphicsrules.sgr file to read âseti low 3âł instead of âseti low 1.âł That solved the flickering problem, but created a new one: I couldnât use any Reshade effects anymore. This would happen:
I tried fiddling with EVERY setting in my graphicsrules.sgr files to no avail. It just so happens that the dumbest little tweak is what finally caused it to work, and I have no real idea why.
I changed it from âseti low 1âł to âseti low 2âł and what do you know, that did the trick.
No more flickering/tearing, no more Reshade craziness. Just perfection.
I wish I understood any of it, but Iâm just grateful it works.Â
I also had to change âoption DirtyRectâ so that under the Low setting âintProp dynamicRenderStrategy 1âł reads âintProp dynamicRenderStrategy 0âł instead.Â
For some reason this craziness was happening when I clicked on anything while controlling a sim:
And then it just stopped and now everything works fine without any problems, again I have no real idea why anything works the way it does.

Of course now when I donât have Reshadeâs effects on, my edges arenât smooth, but I have always played with Reshade on anyway, and I use its SMAA or FXAA effects, whichever one I feel like using at the time.
You can play with a dof effect on, but it might be weird, and it will take the UIs out of focus as well. You can make a UI mask and apply it through Reshade as well, and then use the toggle function to turn it off when taking screenshots.
A few unedited screenshots:
Sky and Don are in focus
Only sky + background are in focus
Only Don is in focus
Different depth of field effects and blooms on Samantha Cordial
QUICK RUNDOWN:
This is to use Reshade for depth of field and other depth-related effects (like ambient occlusion or bloom) instead of post-processing mod.Â
Post-Processing mod may be too taxing on your game, but Reshade may be able to do the same thing with less difficulty.Â
Download and install Reshade if you donât already have it installed
In your game, lower smooth edges all the way
If your game gets all glitchy with smooth edges down, then out of the game change your GraphicsRules.sgr files to read âseti Low 2âł
You may have to change âintProp dynamicRenderStrategy 1â under âoption DirtyRectâ to âintProp dynamicRenderStrategy 0âł
You may also need to check and see if you have settings on your graphics card already bumping up the FXAA on your game, because it can effect the depth buffer as well
Tip for screenshot taking: set up your shot the way you want it in tab mode, then open your reshade menu. With your reshade menu open, you can point your mouse over anywhere in the screen you want the focus to be when using a depth of field effect, so you now have full control of the focus area. Then take the screenshot with the menu still open so you can keep the focus youâve chosen.
I wrote this with someone who kind of already has all this installed in mind, but I will be happy to explain every step in a tutorial manner, if anyone needs extra help.
More pics + graphics discussion below the cut. (Yes, sheâs fixed, donât worry.) Â
TLDR:Â Sometimes you need to keep some in-game settings turned up even if you do all the fancy Nvidia Profile stuff.
Thereâs been a lot of innovative ideas (re)circulating to get around the purple flashing texture memory glitch, and the one involving the Nvidia Control Panel settings has been really good to me... except for the part about not being able to turn all of the in-game settings down all the way. I am glad, though, that the solution to Stachia and Saphirâs freaky-ass Vulcan nose bridges was turning the Sim/Object Detail setting back up. It didnât seem to affect Lehabim as much - maybe a F vs M rendering process? Who knows. I also couldnât turn in-game texture settings down, either. In-game smooth edges is completely down, though. Shadows are âoffâ and lighting is at low. Iâve lost the on-the-ground shadows, but shading-shadows on objects themselves is still fine, so, I am sacrificing to make pond water stay. Â
My computer is about 6-7 years old; it was custom built by my brother-in-law, an avid League of Legends/ESO gamer, and then he sold it to me on the cheap in about 2017 when he upgraded. The processor is Intel i5, 16gb RAM, and the video card is a Nvidia GTX 770. Obvs, the OS is Windows 10.
I did or have previously done pretty much everything @dramallamadingdang has posted about doing, except that I maintain my fade distance at off, have my view distance at medium, and am keeping shaders turned on. Prior to doing the Nvidia Control Panel fixes, though, I was still running into crashing issues, albeit not ones preceded by purple flashing (much). I still havenât played enough since making the changes to be sure itâs finally all better stable, but shifting the burden onto the graphics card and away from the program as much as possible makes sense.  Although these new ghost-shadows (see Stachia pic #2) are popping up every now and then, on the whole, this seems to be working for me.
This is all to say, if youâre following all the instructions (and/or still keeping shaders on because youâre greedy like me) and still having some graphical issues, and you have to turn your in-game settings back up, youâre not alone and youâre not necessarily screwing up the instructions. Computers are so fucking touchy, and they work how they want to. Â

lorinsv replied to your photoset âBlack Spirit learns to play dead, aka her brilliant, heart-wrenching...â
Hi, I've been out of the loop for a couple of weeks (visiting long-time simming friends in Germany/UK first trip to Europe AAAGGHHH so beautiful!! :D :D :D). Anyway - you haz shadows again! I notice mine are gone now too. How did you fix yours?
OMG I never saw your comment! Does tumblr eat those too, now?! Sorry!
First, no, I donât have my shadows back, Iâm just back on the old computer because the new one has the same issues again (sucks but yay, shadows :D) So just a matter of old graphics card driver.
And wow! First time in Europe and a simming tour at the same time, how wonderful:) I hope you had a great time in Europe and with your simming friends, that is so cool!
Thank you everyone for your help with taking game...
What kind of graphic card do you have? Nvidia? I still have shadows, but I think it is just because Iâm not using the most up to date driver for my card (my driver is 337.88)
Hey, thatâs an idea, thatâs what I did with my ATI card on the other computer, yet I didnât think of reverting to older drivers with this one. Iâll try that, thank you :)
Edit: nope, it says itâs not compatible even though the card was on the list of supported cards. Iâll investigate further and try some other driver. The wiki seems to be wrong as they say the shadows were broken with 327, and yours are fine with the 337 driver.
Thank you everyone for your help with taking game pics in Winodws Seven. I tried Fraps but didnât like how heavy it was, so I gave up on full screen playing (and one key screencapping) for now and went back to my old utility (purrint).
Phinae: the Graphic Rules Maker didnât help with the black squares (and I think it actually made the game look worse lol)
Thanks again :)
