transmasc grace headcanon that he had mentioned his disdain for having boobs and mentioned that he was saving up for top surgery just enough times that after he was sedated, stratt made them give him a mastectomy before sending him off.
when he wakes up, he assumes that the amnesia caused him to forget having top surgery, but eventually he starts remembering things that were very recent and remembering he still had boobs. and when he realizes that stratt tried to make his last few months/years/however long he survived on that ship just a little more comfortable for him he bawls his eyes out because it just makes her even less hateable.

So I love when folks play around with Grace’s gender in fandom, because no mater what direction you go, it’s fun to consider how a character like Grace would handle being trans.
Now, if we go the trans fem or non binary route, the Grace would then be someone who hadn’t ever allowed himself to fully explore his gender or let himself to think too deeply about it.
Admitting you’re trans and coming to terms with that later in life is Fucking Hard for some people. Especially if you’re in a public facing job and, in his case, working with kids. Now he does live in San Fransisco, but still, you feel like you gotta just compartmentalize your presentation to maintain your safety and job security. And Grace is a coward so he’d probably find it all too daunting and keep pushing it down.
But once Grace is on Erid, he’s surrounded by aliens who don’t even have gendered pronouns At All because the populous are agender by default. And he’s Already the weird alien as is, so experimenting with his appearance and gender would be totally welcome and supported.
However, if we go the trans masc route, then Grace could be someone who transitioned younger and went full stealth. He’d likely be anxious of other finding out at all, and since he has no family that will miss him in the movie, This Could Be Why. He might have come out to his family and they reacted badly. First dismissing and minimizing him, to out right rejecting him. Suddenly young Grace’s intelligence and college scholarships become his ticket to freedom. Soon escaping to college in California and starting anew.
By the time Stratt finds him teaching middle school, he’s been living comfortably as a man for over a decade, but is also hyper vigilant of how others perceive him. He might even over conform, staying firmly on one side of the binary even if he might feel more leaning to the center at times.
I think he’d keep that he’s trans such a closely guarded secret. The reason only Stratt might know would be through a hacking of medical records when she’s looking for some medical reason she can’t send her friend to space. But he’s a perfectly healthy candidate, and being trans does not mean you cannot be sacrificed for save humanity. So Stratt would quietly add his medications to the list of what to pack into the Hail Mary, just in case.
Much like above for transfem Grace, once Grace is in space and then on Erid, I think he’d relax and play more with his gender expression. No longer bound to the expectations and judgement of human society.
I will never give up Eridians wearing cloths, so you know some fashionista Eridian would be begging Grace to let them dress him. The styles they come up with trying to incorporate human fashion and Eridian fashion would be Loud in more ways then one.
Ano no matter what, if Grace ever chooses to go by a different pronoun, the Rocky will adopt that pronoun too! RockyGrace must match!!

Trans grace is very dear to me
Random HC that as soon as she knew she was sending Grace up on the Hail Mary, Stratt had a frankly absurd amount of T loaded up onto the ship, like, far more than he could ever need for the mission as she expected it to go, and all set up up and ready for use by armando, because she might be killing her pet scientist but she’s not a MONSTER and she’s hardly going to force him to go through detransitioning (prob not the right word but I’m tired and my brain isn’t working right so like… yk what I mean ok, if it’s not right it’s right enough) up there. Like, she sent up enough that it took multiple human years on Erid before he even had to think about asking for help synthesising more. She had no idea he’d need so much, but by GOD she was NOT about to torture the poor guy as well as sending him up on a suicide mission.
