As an ace person who does resonate with AbaC and finds fics with asexual characters kind of a mixed bag in general, I think that what works in AbaC is that sex is still a big plot point.
I find that a lot of the time there is a tendency to write about asexuality as if ace folks never think about sex at all and experience no drive whatsoever (which is a thing for some ace people, but in my experience not as common as people seem to think), and there are definitely some stories where that works, but for the most part, my favourite ace fics are the ones that deal with those contradictions, acknowledging what it’s like being ace in a sexual world, that you can still feel horny while not experiencing sexual attraction, that you can want intimacy still, and that it can be confusing how to ask for that.
Which is why I think that AbaC Connor’s struggles with his sexuality ends up resonating with so many of us, because yeah, for him it was just because he was trying with the wrong gender, but he went through all the motions that I know I and almost every ace person I know went through trying to figure out our sexuality

The motions of struggling to fit your sexuality into a world that doesn't handle it well seems like a bit of a universal queer theme, and while I'm... not happy Connor's struggles resonate with anyone, I'm really glad to know that they have that feeling of reality to them. ❤️
As a sidebar, while AbaC has plenty of sexual exploration (and will have a lot more), the importance of intimacy as its own pillar in a relationship, separate from sex, is something of a core theme (and will remain so).

I know you’re not writing Connor as asexual in the universe, but it honestly did resonate so much with my experience being ace (which was actually why my friend recommended it to me in the first place).

Oh wow anon thank you for stopping by and sharing this! I love that Ahead by a Century has broken a little bit out of HRPF containment (including being brought up By Unsuspecting People's Bosses). It's sort of a more complete story than your average fanfic and gives a whole primer to the pairing, in a way, so that makes sense!
But in terms of it resonating with you as an ace reader, I don't know if your friend mentioned (perhaps this is why they rec'd it!) but apparently you are not alone. I love so much that AbaC!Connor (and GD!Connor too, apparently), have resonated with ace readers despite not being written as such.
In AbaC I was quite aware of asexual as being a potential read of his character (though he never thinks it and possibly doesn't have the vocabulary for it, there's definitely a period of time where Leon is essentially assuming Connor is asexual) even though I knew that wasn't where I was going with it in the long run. I hope you enjoy Part 3 even though it's going to pretty firmly diverge from any suspicions of asexuality - it's going to be a pretty deep dive into what, exactly, is the shape of Connor's sexual desire (among other things).
I do find it funny and ironic that I, a definitely not asexual person who has written a tremendous amount of sex-forward fanfic, filters for explicit fics by preference, and Does Not Get the idea of a T-rated romance fic, has accidentally written a fic that resonates with ace readers, but also it's a delightful accident.

i was reading a fic and the queer themes were so strongly implemented into their daily life that i got the biggest fomo of my life and i had to close it because i genuinely felt so sad that i will never experience something so beautiful. i basically live in the middle of nowhere, only my close friends know about me and god forbid i come out and the nearest city close to me doesn't even have a queer bar or even a single queer space and the only queer spaces i experience are the ones me and my friends create for ourselves. but in this fic everything was so beautiful and full of queer culture and *sigh* i want all this in my life too, i want to know more queer people, i want queer spaces, i want to be able to come out without fearing for my wellbeing, i want to live openly and i want to be as queer as possible. i know fiction doesn't equate to reality, but one can wish to live freely.
