Geralt was curled up on his side in bed, aimlessly scrolling through Twitter when his phone buzzed again. They sniffed, pulling the soft forest green blanket tighter around his shoulders, swiping the notification away. He swallowed thickly, breathing heavily, barely taking in any of the words on their screen. He wasn't sure how long he'd been lying there, and he only knew what time it was from the figure on his screen. It was getting late, and they knew they should get up and have something to eat, some water at least. The idea of moving made him want to scream though, and he let out a soft whimper, rolling onto their front to shove their face into the pillows. He took a deep, shuddering breath to try and calm down. They let it out again, and a sob caught in his throat.

"Fuck," he gasped, shoving his hands over his eyes. Their breath caught on another sob, and he tugged the blanket up over his head. They bit their lip, sniffling and feeling ashamed of himself for reacting so strongly. Why couldn't he just get up? Everything was fine, he was just overreacting anyway- a wet gasp burst out of them and he felt himself shudder.

Stupid, it's not a big deal, Eskel understands, it's fine.

He lay there for a while trying to stop crying, feeling very small and very alone. If he could just sit up, pull himself together and stop crying, it would be fine.

They sucked in a sharp breath and shuffled up the bed, clinging to the blanket desperately. He pushed himself into the corner of the bed against the wall and propped themself up against the pillows. He closed his eyes, even the dim lighting feeling too much, and pulled their knees up to their chest, hugging them close.

But no matter how much they tried to distract themself, they couldn't avoid thinking about it. How people were never going to see him the way he truly was. How it didn't matter what he did, how he acted, his family would always see him in the same way. Expect the same things from him. He worried that Jaskier did too, sometimes, that he still saw them as a girl. The thought made him wince and he felt more tears slip down his face.

They loved Jaskier, truly, he meant the world to them. They had been astounded when Jaskier agreed to go out on that first date with them. But when the two of them had met, Geralt hadn't been out yet. It had taken him months to get up the courage to tell Jaskier, stammering and unsure the whole way through it. They had been convinced Jaskier would end it then, but he hadn't. Jaskier had been wonderful about using the right pronouns and name, and he had adjusted to telling people he had a partner, not a girlfriend, with ease. He had been perfect, and logically Geralt knew that there was no reason to worry. When they felt like this, however, it was hard not to worry about what Jaskier truly thought. If he thought the same as Geralt's family did. Geralt took another shaky breath, letting out a tiny whimper.

Fuck you’re so pathetic, Geralt, just get over it already.

There was a knock at the door. They started, gasped and curled in on themself in a small, shaky ball.

What have you got to be so upset about, anyway, for fuck’s sake?  

"Geralt?" It was Eskel's voice, and Geralt groaned quietly. He couldn't deal with this right now. "Geralt? Can I come in?"

They didn't know what to say. Eskel couldn't come in, see them like this…

"Geralt, will you please say something?"

Geralt grimaced at the worry seeping into Eskel's voice. They took a breath and started to reply.

"'M fine, Esk."

The voice cracking halfway through their words gave them away, and Geralt dropped their head to their knees with a soft groan. He sighed.

"Come in."

The door was open in a flash and Eskel stepped inside, his brow furrowed, eyes filled with concern. He walked slowly towards the bed and stopped in front of Geralt. He stared at his friend for a long moment, taking in the slight trembling of his shoulders, the redness of his eyes before seeming to reach a decision. Geralt sniffled miserably as Eskel looked them over, and then let out the most undignified yelp as Eskel wrapped his warm body around their own.

Their voice was a tiny, wobbly thing when they next spoke. "E-Esk?"

Eskel only gripped him tighter. "You deserve to feel loved, Geralt, I don't care what she's made you think. You, me, Jaskier and the others- we're family now. And we love you. I love you," he said, pressing a kiss into Geralt's hair. "You're a wonderful person, and you deserve better than her."

Geralt listened quietly as Eskel spoke. When he stopped, they looked up at him through their damp eyelashes.

"I’m…I’m just overreacting…" he said, voice rough and croaky. Already, he could feel his eyes filling with embarrassed tears again. Eskel shook his head, and wrapped his arms tighter still around Geralt’s chest.

“No, you’re not. It sucks and I’m sorry, and you do deserve better. You wouldn’t say I was overreacting if Vesemir suddenly started misgendering me, would you?” Eskel stared at him expectantly, still looking concerned and even a little nervous.

Shakily, Geralt shook his head, before burying his face in his blanket again. It was all too much, too many feelings, too many sensations, why was his light still on-

They didn’t even realise that they’d said it all out loud until they felt Eskel move, and suddenly the room went dark. Geralt heaved a shuddery sigh of relief, and collapsed against Eskel’s chest.

“Thank you,” he whispered, rubbing tears from his face as he tried to calm down. “I- thank you,” he finished, trailing off. He was feeling a little better now it was less bright, and the hug was certainly helping. Their thoughts were still going a million miles an hour though, and the quiet would help with that.

The two of them sat in silence for a while, Eskel’s presence reassuring and comforting without any words needing to be said. Eventually, the peace was broken by the sound of Geralt’s stomach rumbling and Geralt blushed, hiding his face in Eskel’s chest.

Eskel smirked. “Maybe you should call Jaskier now, get him to bring some dinner over with him.”

Wordlessly, Geralt reached for his phone, clicking it open to find Jaskier’s number in his phone. They held it to their ear, waiting, knuckles turning white at how tightly they were gripping it.

“Hey, handsome!” Jaskier’s cheerful voice rang through the speaker, and Geralt couldn’t contain their little smile.

“Hey,” they murmured, “you heading home yet?”

It was silent for a moment before Jaskier replied. “Are you ok, sweetheart? You sound a bit rough?”

Geralt could hear the sound of a self-service machine beeping in the background. Hopefully, that meant Jaskier would be back soon.

“Uh, ‘m fine. Just…” he trailed off awkwardly, before clearing his throat and trying again. “Can you bring something for dinner, please?”

“Yeah, yeah of course, I’ll grab that beer you like as well, ok? I’ll be home soon.” Jaskier hung up and Geralt sighed, snuggling back into his blanket.
