Seven Canadians are among dozens injured after two trains collided head-on in Peru on Tuesday, Global Affairs Canada confirmed. The collision took place on the railway leading to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A train driver was killed and 40 more people were injured in the collision between trains operated by Inca Rail S.A. and PeruRail S.A., which mainly deliver tourists to the historic site.  A health official told Reuters that about 20 people were in relatively serious condition. Foreign tourists, including the Canadians, are among the injured.

At least 14 people have been killed and more than 80 injured after two trains collided near Indonesia's capital Jakarta, according to the rail company.

Train operator KAI said the crash in the city of Bekasi, about 25 kilometres from Jakarta, involved a commuter train and a long-distance train.

Bobby Rasyidin, chief executive of Indonesia's state railway firm KAI, said the death toll had risen to 14.

Rescuers have completed work to extract survivors still trapped in the wreckage.

Earlier, KAI spokesman Franoto Wibowo told local broadcaster Kompas TV that rescuing passengers was the company's top priority.

"As for the victims, we have made every effort to evacuate them as quickly as possible to the nearest hospitals," he said.

"We are still in the process of collecting data and evidence… The detailed chronology of the cause will be delivered later by the authorised authorities."

Dozens of emergency service workers were deployed to the scene, helping people off the train carriages and providing medical help at the station.

Photos from the scene show damaged panelling and buckled windows on one of the trains.

Mr Rasyidin told a press conference that the commuter train first collided with a taxi on the tracks, and was then hit by the long-distance train.

A women-only carriage bore the brunt of the crash.

One passenger has told reporters she initially intended to use the women-only carriage but opted for the one behind it.

She had been on a call with her husband, asking him to pick her up from the station, when the collision occurred.

"I haven't even finished with the call, and the trains collided," she said.

In a post on X, KAI apologised for the incident, saying evacuating passengers and crew was its top priority.

President Prabowo Subianto visited hospital patients in Bekasi on Tuesday, local time, and said he had ordered an "immediate investigation".

He also agreed to build a flyover near the train tracks to help resolve heavy traffic congestion.

At least 39 people were killed, and dozens were injured after a high-speed train collision in southern Spain on January 17.

...and this, ladies and gentlemen, is why the California HSR is over budget doing massive grade separation. Because Brightline trains have *killed* more than 100 people since going into service (who knows how many injured?). Don't get me wrong: I think Brightline is great! But at what point does it become sensible to spend a little extra to make things safer? California HSR is being built to achieve 220mph, a whole 100 mph faster than Brightline, and even the Phase I will be 2½ times longer than Brightline but target a schedule of arriving 1 hour quicker LA to SF than Brightline's Palm Beach to Orlando...
