basically, in my visit to zagreb i used their fabulous tram network, and just shortly after boarding a tram at the train station stop, some pretentious idiot drove in front of us with his personal rubber-tyred automobile. tram driver couldnt brake in time and the tram had a large mass and thus inertia, so there wasn't much choice, everyone was pissed.
however, i wasn't angry very long, so i started to get curious. after all, i was in a DERAILMENT, sth not everyone can brag about. and since i had fuck all to do that day, i though i might as well document this. what happens when a tram derails?
the tram and the personal automobile collided at an almost perpendicular angle, on 31st march, at 16:17. due to the adding of the force vectors, and respective masses of the two vehicles, the tram ended up ~45° from its original position, and the automobile ~135° from its original trajectory.
the tram is an old articulated two-car tram for metre-gauge track, model Tatra KT4, built by ČKD Tatra in Czechoslovakia. since it's not a low floor tram, it's quite bottom heavy, so we were relatively safe up in there, and it probably made the hit more forceful. the front bogie was derailed completely and created two parallel scratches in the road, while the rear bogie remained on track.
visible here and on the first picture, the tram sustained almost minimal damage, with one headlight blown out and the pantograph broken because it got caught in the wires holding a traffic light in place. the overhead wires were intact and useable after the accident. the automobile was severely damaged amd left unsuitable for driving, it was soon towed away. the tram had its paint scratched, but since it had a sturdy, angular shape, and the surface already looked wrinkled, i didn't see much structural damage.
then they strapped the broken pantograph so it doesn't fall off i guess, and started pulling the tram back onto the tracks at 17:18, and soon the second axle of the front bogie sat back on the rails. while trying to get it right, some more pavement was scratched by the wheel flanges.
hmm. not quite right. the first axle is still off
pulling it up with a crane truck, so the axle gets unstuck
the tram is coupled with the towing truck and towed away.
and then the workers swept the road from debris, and the traffic went on as usual at 17:35, about an hour and 18 minutes later.
also, i think even the boss of ZET was soon at the scene, so it was kinda like mr toppham hat came to the site after one of the engines made a mess. idfk it was weird
