I mourn that over 2 billion Muslims just watch it and feel utterly powerless to stop it.

I mourn not only the impunity of one single occupying state, but the incapability and unwillingness of more than fifty Muslim-majority countries to offer anything beyond a single statement of condemnation.

I mourn not only the continued dehumanization of the Palestinians, but the lack of humanity of the world that watches their suffering each day and decides that no human rights or dignity are to be afforded to them.

I mourn not only that our sacred places and people are desecrated, but that we’ve become so used to their desecration.

Cyprus, Greece, Thailand, India, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, France, Germany, Guatemala, Honduras, Argentina, just to name a few nations.

The testimony of a young German activist has renewed scrutiny of sexual violence that’s being used against detainees in Israeli custody as a means of abuse, intimidation, and punishment.

Anna Liedtke, 25, was among the international activists aboard a Freedom Flotilla vessel carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza when Israeli forces intercepted the boat in international waters on 8 October 2025. She was detained in Israel for five days, during which she said she was subjected to repeated unlawful strip-searches and raped by female prison guards while male guards laughed and watched.

Her testimony comes amid continuing concerns over impunity for sexual violence committed in Israeli detention facilities. On 5 July 2024, five Israeli soldiers at the Sde Teiman detention facility in the Negev Desert brutally assaulted a handcuffed and blindfolded Palestinian detainee from Gaza. The assault reportedly involved the rape of the detainee with a sharp object, causing broken ribs, a punctured lung, and severe internal rectal injuries.

A few months ago, Israeli authorities dropped the charges against the five soldiers implicated in the assault. Around the same time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the soldiers, describing them as “heroes”, remarks that intensified concerns over official tolerance and impunity for torture and sexual violence committed against detainees.

THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE CLEAR: NO MORE U.S. AID TO ISRAEL

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on an amendment introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie to cut the $3.3 billion in annual U.S. military aid to Israel. I strongly support this amendment.

Israel, like any other country, had the right to defend itself against the horrific terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 innocent people. But it did not have the right to go to war against the entire Palestinian population. It did not have the right to kill more than 73,000 Palestinians and wound over 173,000 more — the vast majority of them women, children and the elderly. It did not have the right to destroy virtually the entire infrastructure of Gaza — the schools, the health facilities, the water systems, wastewater plants, the electric grid that a civilian population depends on to survive. It did not have the right to destroy or damage 92% of all housing units in Gaza. In other words, Israel did not have the right to commit genocide. And it did not have the right to escalate its violence and annexation of the West Bank while the world’s attention was focused elsewhere.

Tragically, almost five months ago, Israel, with strong support from the Trump administration, launched a reckless and illegal war against Iran — a war that has killed thousands of people and left an already unstable region of the world even more unstable. That war expanded into Lebanon, where Israeli strikes have now killed more than 4,000 people and displaced some 20% of the entire Lebanese population. That is not “defending Israel”. These are regional wars of expansion and terror, waged without a clear strategy, and without an end in sight.

The American people are catching on. Polls show that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters now oppose sending military aid to Israel, as do more than one-third of Republican voters. Just 16% of all Americans support giving Israel unconditional aid.

And I am proud that this past April, 40 out of 47 Senate Democrats — a record number — supported my bill to block arms sales to the far-right, extremist Netanyahu government.

We have enormous unmet needs in our own country. Today, while 60% of our people are living paycheck to paycheck, tens of millions of Americans cannot afford housing, healthcare, childcare and other basic needs. Congress must focus on the needs of their constituents, not an Israeli government that is undermining American values. I urge my colleagues in the House to vote yes on the Massie amendment.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi (山口 彊, Yamaguchi Tsutomu) (16 March 1916 – 4 January 2010) was a Japanese marine engineer who survived and witnessed both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings during World War II. Although at least 160 people are known to have been affected by both bombings, he is the only person to have been officially recognized by the government of Japan as surviving both explosions.

A resident of Nagasaki, Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on business for his employer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries when the city was bombed at 8:15 AM, on 6 August 1945. He returned to Nagasaki the following day and, despite his wounds, returned to work on 9 August, the day of the second atomic bombing. That morning, while he was being told by his supervisor that he was “crazy” after describing how one bomb had destroyed the city, the Nagasaki bomb detonated. 

In 1957, he was recognized as a hibakusha (“explosion-affected person”) of the Nagasaki bombing, but was not officially recognized as a survivor of Hiroshima by the Japanese government until 24 March 2009. He died of stomach cancer on 4 January 2010, at the age of 93.
