Oh, man. Fiasco. This whole thing begins in a haze of confusion for me at first. I get to page eight, “The Elevator Pitch”, and the first boldface sentence tells you right off the bat: three, four or five people. THERE IS NO GAME MASTER. So the book’s caught me with the line and sinker, too. No game master? WtH? The more I’m reading in, the more I start to remember high school and college theater. Situational, scenes, and chaos building up tension to its ultimate conclusion. In my head I can see the stage, and a few classmates up there. “Give is a location.” People shouting locations as the improv troupe picks one. “Give is an object!” Shouts, laughter from the audience. “Now a relationship!” This goes on until you’ve got the makings of a scene that the improv troupe will carry out. If they’re really good, you’re left wondering HtF did they just do that? That’s Fiasco. Obviously there’s guidelines, ways to ferret out how the scene will ultimately play out. Bear with me. I’m reading this book, and what I’m seeing in my head is the end of Reservoir Dogs and the Mexican standoff. Guns pointed at everyone and everyone pointing guns. All the things that lead up to the moment. It’s raw, gritty and intense. It’s pulp fiction, El Mariachi and Dusk ‘Til Dawn. It’s problematic scenes and relationships where there are no guarantees for a survivor. Or scenes where ultimately the bad guy wins, the good guy is left in misery and the credits roll (S7VEN). Ho-ly schnikies.
