Last week, I tried Toffu Protein, a meat analogue from Asahico. The look is beautiful and the texture is very nice and surprisingly meat-like, but the flavor is a tough sell. It's very mushroomy, which makes sense on paper (that savory, umami flavor!), but this is like a very perfumey, oddly sweet, artificial shiitake flavor.
The sauce is also... unusual. It's mostly just sweet and conspicuously oily—maybe residue from the soy product? Also, it's supposed to be yakiniku (Korean barbecue) flavor, but that's not what I tasted at all. And it really, really did not go with kimchi. But it was okay on rice with lemon garlic sauce (no picture), and it kinda worked in a soy sauce cucumber salad?
Overall, because the texture is so nice, I'd say there's potential, but more for their other flavors. I do kinda wish I didn't have a second pack of this flavor in my freezer, but maybe I'll find a nice way to arrange it.
