Daniel Molloy took his life into his own hands every night. Sure, you might think it was just a freak accident he ran into two vampires who wanted to eat him make him their third. Or he just liked drugs and adventure. Or you, know, being gendered male helped a lot.

But consider that 1973 Daniel Molloy exists in a world without cell phones. Without milk carton pictures. Without Amber (or Silver) Alerts. When hitchhiking was a thing people did for adventure and to save on gas, instead of something you avoided so a serial killer wouldn't take you to a second location.

There was so much arson in general in the 1970s, and a lot of it happened or was directed at gay bars.

In the 1970s, the San Francisco gay bar Toad Hall suffered four fires within a short period of time (article), one in 1971 and three? in 1974.

As far as we can tell, Louis lives in San Francisco in the Interview With the Vampire (1973 in the novels' time; 1976 published) and until at least the end of The Vampire Lestat (both:1985).

Also during that same period there was a serial killer called the Doodler who operated in San Francisco who'd hit on gay men, ask to sketch them and then murder them. He seems to have been active from January 1974-1976. The Doodler has never been caught.

Louis also visits New Orleans in 1973 where he says he spent spring and summer of that year looking for Lestat, finding him, and then moping about it and breaking up with Armand before he's in San Francisco in the "winter" or "fall" where he meets Daniel Molloy.

During that time period in which Louis says he visited New Orleans, there was a major arson attack on a gay bar. On June 24, 1973, the Upstairs Lounge, in New Orleans, was destroyed in an arson attack. The Upstairs Lounge's upper level also served as a temporary? meeting place for the New Orleans MCC branch, a LGBTQ friendly congregation. Previous MCC branches also suffered arson attacks: on January 27, 1973 the Los Angeles MCC church was burnt; followed by the Nashville one in March 1973.
