On 16th Aug we’ll first listen to an 'Old Time Radio' Broadcast of 'The Adventure of the Blarney Stone' (set in Ireland) from 1946 with Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce (Sponsored by Petrie Wine!) 'Holmes and Watson visit Blarney Castle. They learn about the dangerous tradition of kissing the Blarney Stone' & then we'll watch an episode of the 1968 series 'The Boscombe Valley Mystery' 'James' girl-friend approaches Holmes, who discovers that Bill's dying words were nothing to do with "a rat" but concerned with the days of the Australian Gold Rush.'

My first encounter with Sherlock Holmes took place in 1984, when "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (1939) was broadcast for the first time on East German television (DDR-Fernsehen). This atmospheric classic, starring the wonderful Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and the amusing Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson, marked the beginning of my lifelong fascination with these two unsurpassed actors in the roles of their lives, as well as with the master British detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887.
