#tips: language

Hi! You could start to blog in Portuguese (just few sentences every day or something like that) or find someone else who’s native or learning the language to practice with. I know that there’s also a website where you can have chats with other language learners but at the moment I don’t remember how it’s called. If you’re interested in practicing your general knowledge of the language, apps like Duolingo have goals to reach daily that should be motivate you to learn a little every day. Good luck! :)

Hei! I’m just like you! When I’m at home, I can speak pretty good but when it comes to actually speak out loud with others, I get anxious and mess up everything… I think it’s a matter of confidence and getting used to the idea of making mistakes. But we are learning and mistakes are a big part of the learning process. The first time you might say some incorrect words or mess up the sentence’s structure but the second time around, you’ll pay more attention to the things you got wrong the first time and so on. But try not to focus only on what you got wrong! On the other hand, think that every sentence and pronunciation you got right, it’s a positive outcome of all your hard work! Also, some time ago I did found this post quite helpful. Hi! Textbooks and dictionaries are the really helpful to start but there’s no right or wrong way to learn a new language. You have to find out what works the best for you. Do you like music? Try to listen to Italian music and every time you find a new word, write it down. Do you like to read? There are lots of easy readings for beginners. Hi triciawolcott! The web is your best friend in this case! With a quick google search you will find tons of resources for any language you want to learn. Memrise and Duolingo are very helpful to start with and also you can look for languages blogs here on tumblr. Good luck! :)

In my opinion grammar is crucial. You have to learn the basic rules to be able to create even the simplest sentence. To learn German it’s so so important to learn first the right order of the words in a sentence, differences between regular and irregular verbs and of course articles and adjectives’ declensions. If you don’t learn these basics, you’re not going anywhere. To learn them I suggest you to get a textbook (but I’m sure you’ve it already) and really understand how those rules work. Then you can do a lot of exercises to test yourself and the next step is reading a lot. It doesn’t really matter what you read (newspaper, wikipedia articles, blogs, …) but doing it will help you comprehend how to use the grammar rules in the everyday language and not only in “fake” sentences of the exercise book. You also asked me about pronunciation. I’m a little skeptic about learning the perfect pronunciation because I don’t think it exist. On most dictionaries for every word there is its IPA (international phonetic alphabeth) transcription that can be useful to learn how the perfect pronunciation should be but listening to music, watching videos and repeating after that works just as fine.Viel Glück! :)
