Lecture 14: Elton John performs “Tiny Dancer” in this footage from the British television variety show The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1971. Astonishingly, the song – which has gone on to become one of John’s most beloved hits, thanks in part to its prominence in the film Almost Famous (2000), and thanks to a beautifully made official music video that debuted in 2017 (check it out here!) – only reached 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 when it was first released. While not John’s most popular hit at the time it came out, “Tiny Dancer” (another collaboration between Elton John and Bernie Taupin) has gone on to become a song that is emblematic of its era, the 1970s, and it has emerged as one of John’s most in-demand signature songs. This BBC television footage from 1971 shows that John was one of those remarkable performers who was just as good (if not better) live than he was in the recording studio.
NOTE: And as an added bonus, below is the memorable Los Angeles-themed Official Music Video for "Tiny Dancer," originally released on YouTube in 2017. It is quite a remarkable video, filmed all over different parts of L.A., which really captures dramatic, funny, and unusual vignettes from the City of Angels.
