golden hour

“Hey Scully, do you want to – what happened?” Whatever Mulder meant to say, he doesn’t say it. Instead, he lets go of whatever’s been in his hands and it falls to the ground with a soft thud. A moment later, he’s kneeling by her side, his hair messed from his recent shower and the breeze, touching her knees. He’s searching her face, worried puppy dog eyes and all. 

“What’s the matter?” he asks

“Nothing,” she says, sobbing. She means it, too. Nothing is wrong. Nothing at all. “I don’t know why I’m crying,” she adds, a bubbly laugh escaping her lips. She tastes her own salty tears and gives Mulder a shaky smile, her lips trembling.

“Honey, please tell me.”

Honey. The endearment magnifies her smile, but also, ironically, her tears. They flow freely now, like they haven’t in so long.

“Scully, are you hurt? Did something happen? You’re scaring me here, partner.”

“I’m sorry,” she says, taking a deep breath, “I’m fi- I feel good, Mulder. I’m not hurt, or sad.”

“Then why are you crying?” he asks, his face a question mark. He gets up, his knees cracking, and touches her hip, silently asking her to make room for him on the porch swing. She moves aside and Mulder sits down. They sway gently, pressed against each other, looking at their property, at the sky, at everything. New tears well up inside her and she doesn’t even try to stop them.

“Is it because of your home? Do you miss it?”

“My home?” she asks. Right, her house. Not her home, never. There’s only one place she considers her home and it sure as hell wasn’t a smart house in the city. “I don’t miss it,” she tells him with a sigh, “this is what I’ve been missing.”

She’s looking at the sky sprawling in front of her, like an exhibitionist displaying its plentiful colors. Tiredly, the sun peeks through the trees, leaving gold freckles on their limbs like tiny gifts. The blue sky welcomes soft pink clouds in its midst, making the picture perfect. She turns to Mulder and when she sees him, his weathered face bathed in the gentle hue of the golden hour, she can only smile at him, loving him quietly, fully, with all of her heart. 

“I missed it too,” he says, his voice heavy.

“You weren’t even looking.”

“Wrong,” he says, taking her hand in his, his eyes never leaving her face, “I’m still looking.”

“To answer your question, Mulder,” she cuddles into his side, knowing it will grow cooler soon. That is her excuse. The truth is that she wants to be close to him, feel his warmth against her. If it were scalding hot, she’d still hold his hand now, needing the solid proof of this. Of them. They’re both here, they’re together. They’re real.

“I was crying because I’m happy.”

“Huh,” he says, and she feels the words rumble in his chest. She buries her nose there, smelling his detergent and so much Mulder. She can’t get enough of it, of him. “That’s a new one.”

“You’d rather I cry because I’m sad?”

“I’d rather you didn’t cry at all.” The words are whispers against her hair where he kisses her.

“I promise you, Mulder. These are good tears.”

“I’m glad, Scully.” Another kiss, warmer, and wetter, against her temple. “I love you, you know.”

“I do know,” she says, closing her eyes as contentment washes over her. “I love you, too, you know.”

I agree that a beta is great and so incredibly helpful. I just find it so difficult to reach out to people even if they offer and then find the right kind of input. I'd sometimes love some storytelling/plot/character input but I need it to be a conversation that surpasses comments on a Google doc and the other person needs to be comfortable to ask hard questions too and oof. It really is difficult to find the perfect beta (and relationship to them).

i’m not a plant person so i have no idea! but i’d go on pinterest, find a few pegs and go with that. i do like the garden aesthetic i just have no idea what anything is called. to me they r just plants and flowers 😔🤙🏻

I’ve been calling for this since before series 11 even started and even more so afterward but from what I’ve heard and read about series 12 I think our wish may come true. It’s about time the stakes were heightened and the impact of these adventures on the companions and The Doctor (as well as the effects on their relationships with one another) were explored. I love this little tardis fam so much but I find a lot of that is coming from fanfics in which people have been able to focus on the dynamic between the group in a way that just wasn’t shown in the actual series. I think we might finally get that this time and I’m excited for it.
