So I'm watching the Tickled documentary, since I reblogged and updated the post about it--like I better watch it if I'm doing all that--and it's truly a wild ride from the start. I knew it was going to be an extreme wild ride when Stephen decided to meet the lawyers at the airport (without the lawyers knowing) with a rainbow sign and the lawyer was like 'oh my gosh it's BEAUTIFUL--can we have that?' and Stephen was like 'of course <3 it's yours'

I’m finally watching the Tickled documentary and...
It’s just making me angry.
I’m only a quarter through it and I’m so sad and disgusted that whoever is behind all the flagrant bullying is so steeped in their own shame that it saturates everything they touch, like an oil slick of self-hatred. I find it legitimately heartbreaking to see a concept that I love because of its inherent playfulness and joy being turned into a weapon. It’s so unsettling that I actually feel a bit ill.
In this shocking documentary you have to see to believe, a pop-culture journalist's investigation into 'competitive endurance tickling' leads him on a dark, twisted journey full of manipulation, deception and online intimidation.

I just watched the documentary Tickled (2016) with my roommates and it was... OMG so many adjectives. Funny and enthralling and horrifying and bizarre and sad. We kept having to pause it to discuss. And then do a bunch of googling when it was over to figure out what happened to the people in it.
Like it starts off seeming like a silly piece on a ridiculous sport (competitive tickling), but quickly veers into mysterious and disturbing territory. For a while I thought maybe it was a decades-long extortion or blackmail scheme, but then you realize whoever is behind it is spending tons of money but doesn't seem to be making much (if any) off of it. The rabbit hole it leads you down is deep and strange and fascinating.
Spoilers under the cut:
My post-movie googling led me to the short follow-up mini-documentary on youtube, and subsequent articles by the documentarians. The person behind it all died in 2017 and it doesn't seem that any of their victims have gotten any kind of justice. The guy who inherited the estate doesn't seem to be harassing the victims or advertising with their full names like his predecessor (which is an improvement I guess). But instead of keeping the videos as a private collection, he has begun selling them online, which is mega shitty.
The whole wild story is one of those truth-is-stranger-than-fiction kind of things. It's just majorly upsetting that the victims are still being exploited and haven't received any justice (and minorly upsetting that Competitive Tickling isn't a real sport).
Really hoping that someday there's a class action lawsuit against the estate.
