Watched Society [1989] directed by Brian Yuzna and it was a fun film with a plethora of old school practical special effects. It has flown under the radar and doesn’t seem to have much of a fan base, not even on a cult classic level, which is a little surprising to me, but then again the film can be hard to stomach if you’re not used to body horror.
The last act does lose some of its steam unfortunately and drags in a few places - for me at least, they could have done a better job at balancing the humor and horror - and while I am glad that Billy, Milo & Clarissa all survived, it is never explained as to why Billy was immune? to being consumed? I could have missed something but I went back and can’t seem to figure out what, if anything, gave Billy the edge to win the fight?
Also, Milo seems to be intentionally queer coded if you pay attention to some of his dialogue, and I was pleasantly surprised he didn’t die! Considering this was a horror movie made in the 80s.
In my heart, Billy now has a boyfriend and a monster girlfriend and they all get to live happily ever after as outcasts of society. The End.
